We've all heard the stories. Especially during Windows updates. It happened, I am more certain of this than I am of the Holocaust. But how dangerous is it nowadays? Can you have Windows and Linux coexist on the same disk? I want to buy a new PC as my 13-something years old i7-3770k with a GTX 1080 and 16GB. But I don't know what causes Microsoft to chimp out and do this or how to certainly prevent it as they will have their consumers eat literal shit if it gives them a dollar worth of profit.I shamefully asked ChatGPT and it said it's a *near* zero chance IF you disconnect the Linux driver during Windows updates. Is that the best I can do?
>>108104371>Linux driverLinux drive.
>>108104371I only disconnected my linux drive before windows 10 installation and it still works fine, despite updating the windows regularly. I think you should be safe provided that each OS has its respective boot on separate physical drive. But now that win11 dev team is completely jeeted you might expect anything to happen really.
>>108104482That's the thing. I'm trying to go with a micro ATX build and I'll have to pay a whole lot more if I want 2 NVMe slots, so I was hoping on having it all in one drive by partitioning it. Or is it too risky? Even deranged, perhaps.
>>108104371>placing this much trust that your data won't be spontaneously nuked from orbit by an updateI just don't understand how any serious person can tolerate thisIf you need to use Winslop that bad, just take their Big Corporate Cock like a man. Install it as your daily driver and don't bother with LinuxOr run Windows in a VM where it fucking belongs and can't touch anything important.
>>108104538but muh gaming anon
>>108104525I wouldn't do that if I were you, unless you are into backup hell each month.
>>108104591What would (YOU) do?
>>108104371yes if windows and linux share common efi msdos partition each can write change at each shuttown or any given time
>>108104607Depends on how linux dependent you are, you can always run WSL or gitbash on windows, if that's not an option compromise on microATX and get something bigger with 2 slots.
>>108104371I just don't use windows whatsoever, not even a dualboot. But if i really needed it i'd just rmmod nvidia send start a vm with gpu passthrough.
>>108104629at shutdown? Why shutdown in specific? What if I just unplug the computer altogether? Can I prevent Windows from shitting everywhere?>>108104645>run WSL or gitbashif I'm not getting paid to do it I ain't doing it>>108104661Can you play games like that? I like the VM idea but I know anticheat doesn't always like it, dunno why
>>108104724>Can you play games like thatI'm not a gaymer anymore but most game just work with wine / Proton now.If you play in vm with gpu passthrough yes and you will have almost native performance like 98%.Regarding anti cheat, you can hide the VM if you really want, should work on the most part.Though not my problem, i don't play games.
>>108104371Im not saying anything but dual booting seems fake and gay when you could just run a VM, assuming you have a powerful enough computer. Pros/cons of dual booting:>Less RAM used>No VMs for programs to detect>Can run Windows normal style>Full disk encryption is difficult>That>Who the fuck wants to run Windows natively? (posted from my Windows 10 laptop)Pros/cons of a using a VM:>More RAM used>VMs can be detected>Every so often something breaks>Can have full disk encryption easy>Wont get your Linux raped>RAM use is negligible on a desktop>Incredibly easy to evade VM busters>Nothing usually actually ever goes wrong>Microcock wont spy on you for the NSA
>>108104371I installed W11 and Ubuntu on a new machine this weekend. I put them on separate SSDs. Windows made its drive the first boot device but I just changed the boot order back and updated GRUB. After I'm done with the classes I'm taking I'll just remove the entire W11 drive.
>>108104371>But I don't know what causes Microsoft to chimp out and do thisNobody knows.I run dual boot from the same disk since ntldr days and did so on every machine and the only problems i had were windows kicking out grub and needing a grub reinstall sometimes. Then UEFI came and everything became easier and i switched to it the earliest possible moment.I never had Windows delete a linux partition and considered it a hoax, spread by people who thought that their Linux would be deleted, because windows overwrote grub. Then about eight years into dual booting with UEFI, suddenly a Windows update did actually delete my Linux partitions. Was no issue, since i have backups, but that was concerning.I eventually just stopped dual booting and wiped Windows.>>108104629That is no issue. Windows doesn't fuck around with other stuff on the EFI partition, because there could be files on it needed for the EFI (like a firmware update), deleting shit there could brick a machine in some edge case. Windows will create a new EFI partition if there isn't one already, but it isn't going to delete anything from it if there is one.Whatever actually causes Windows to wipe Linux partitions, is unknown, and i don't see a reason why a different drive should be safe from this, unless its plugged out.It is so extremely rare. You just don't know.
>>108104724if you wanna be sure computer sleeps forget cmos reset jumper at reset not sure if it breaks as you try to start with it
>>108104371Install Ubuntu. Proton will run all of your games except for League of Legends (even better).
>>108104551Gaming world just fine on Linux unless you're a slop consooming NPC that can't live with Caw of Doody and if that is the case they need to just stay on windows anyway
>>108104823>suddenly a Windows update did actually delete my Linux partitions.Man that's scary. It's really true isn't it. I think gayming on Linux is actually fine for the types of games I play. But I am a bit annoyed about not being able to play some games due to anticheat>>108104803>Incredibly easy to evade VM bustersIs it really? >>108104850I do not play LoL as I am not black
Would installing windows and linux in separate SSDs prevent this issue?
>>108105074That's what I'm trying to decide on. >>108104823 says even then it could fuck things up. I don't see why they wouldn't. Windows can just mount the other drive and kill it.I wish there was a way to config the motherboard to hide the other drive from Windows.
>>108104371I have been dual booting windows 10 and linux on the same laptop for about 7-8 years and I never had any issues. I take absolutely no precautions. Still nothing ever happened.Of course I might just be getting lucky but that's my experience.I have steam and proton setup and everything and I do play some games on Linux, when they work well, but as soon as I see any kind of issue or lower performance, I go back to windows. The thrill of tinkering with wine crap the game runs well gets old really soon. Maybe with dedicated gaming distros this doesn't happen, I don't know.
>>108104371stop being a poorfag and install them on different drive while using linux grub or whatever to chain load windows
>>108104371>"Y'all let Apple call you pedos and look through your personal pics lmao"Why would you get in trouble for the image files sitting on your storage anon? What kind of fucked up shit are you fapping to?
>>108104371If you really wanna use windows just install an older stable version of 10 or 11 then rip out the update function hooks and spying with ChrisTitusTools and throw in something like Fort Firewall for good measure, you'll never get fucked by updates again and you'll be as private as you can be with hardware backdoors in your shit anyway.
>>108104551Anon, that's the dumbest possible reason. "I could've escaped the communist dictatorship, but it would've been harder to watch Adventure Time reruns so I ended up just getting enslaved." Freedom is priority one. If you can't have a little game because of it, then you can't. Let it radicalize you and drive you to action.
>>108104873>Gaming works just fine>AS LONG AS IT'S ON THIS LIST OF SUPPORTED GAMES AND IF IT ISN'T YOU JUST HAVE SHIT TASTE AND THE OS IS STILL BETTER THAN SEX AND IF YOU DISAGREE THEN YOU'RE FUCKING RETARDED AND DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT COMPUTERS.Every time with you're retarded asses. Next you'll be defending the new goddamn captcha.
>>108104371In the beginning, when Windows updates actually updated Windows files you could just install Windows first, then install Linux. Everything worked. Then Windows 10 happened and their new update way is basically reinstallling the system using a new image which breaks dual boot because it's like reinstalling Windows. While I had occurences of Windows actually not breaking Linux bootloader I don't take chances. I just physically separate the disks.
>>108104371I have a 512GB SSD for Arch and a 512GB SSD for Windows 10. I have had this for 4.5 years and have had literally 0 problems.
>>108104371couldnt you just completely disable write perms in windows. any installer will probably just fail instead of changing perms.
>>108104371>Windows and Linux coexist on the same disk?I had to dual boot recently for school and I specifically avoided running on the same disc. They can co-exist but Windows has a habit of deleting the boot partition on Linux systems when Windows Update goes through upon reboot. I highly recommend just getting a second drive for Windows and using grub to select between the two OS' and as well to keep them separate
>>108104371I've never heard of windows doing this and I've dualbooted for years. It could only happen if the user directs windows to do it. So the solution is just to not do it.
>>108106528>I WOULD RATHER KILL MYSELF THAN SEE A WORLD WHERE JEWISH ANTI-CONSUMER PRACTICES AREN'T BEING CELEBRATED AS THE BEST THING EVER!!Every time with you retards. If you can play 99% of all the games except the ones with malware rootkits so bad they absolutely need the Windows backdoors to run then you think the whole OS is unusable.Next you'll say that companies always have your best interest in their minds.
>>108104371Using more than a single OS per disk has always been a meme, no matter how "safe" or "unsafe" it is. Just learn how to create a virtual machine or buy a 2nd drive.
>>108104371When I tried to dual boot a few months ago Windows broke itself 3 times, each time it updated. Then it blocked me from trying to nap the product key by flagging key grabbing software as viruses.I'm not longer running Windows on any of my devices.
>>108108786>piclost, thx
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn7CPlUpflk
In my experience it overwrites the efi partion in the drive it's being installed on. If your distro is installed in another drive, and has its own independent efi parition (i.e. not hooked to the other drive for a unified boot menu), it won't be a problem.
>>108104371Stop using grubInstall rEFIndSimple asAlso remove the windows boot partition you don't need it nowIf you're too much of a pussy just move it down to the lowest priorityInstall efibootmgr to configure this shit from the CLI instead of your BIOS
>>108106726These retards are partitioning one 256gb ssd and using grub to boot
>>108105155>I wish there was a way to config the motherboard to hide the other drive from Windows. It’s called unplugging the drive anon.Completely worth it if you only use winAIDS 10% of the time only for specific programs.
>>108112116Why are you retarded?
>>108104371>But how dangerous is it nowadays?Still dangerous.>Can you have Windows and Linux coexist on the same disk? Can you? Yes. Should you? No, because Windows will wipe it because MicroJeet has a chimpy about it.Just get two drives, put Linux on the second one after Windows and MicroJeet will at least RESPECT the dual-boot at that point.
>>108104371Happened to me years ago, I ended up moving linux to a seperate SATA SSD and adding a power switch between it and the motherboard so it can be turned off during updates. I wish there was a way to do this with an M.2 SSD.
>>108106528Name 5 games you want to play that you can't play on Linux.
