Typing this from my T480, quad-core without GPU, Debian Xfce, ~70 tabs open in Firefox. The only times I find myself wishing for more performance are when watching unreasonably large videos e.g. 4K or compiling something gigantic like a browser. Watching videos up to FHD isn't a problem, even when doing something on the side, though the fan does spin up. HD video and light web browsing (without monstrosities like TikTok or New Reddit) can be done fanless.

I don't struggle with performance at all on it and use it a lot more than my more powerful desktop (I like staying in bed with it kek). use it mostly for browsing, playing a few games like Blue Archive or Koikatsu (reminder: I disabled the Nvidia GPU, I do it all on the integrated graphics), image editing on Krita, and other general stuff. sometimes all of that at the same time. works really well for me and with the 72Wh external battery upgrade I get 10+ hours of web browsing on it
the default screen panel isn't very good but it can be modded very easily (the panel I have on mine is really good). I have an A485 on the side too that I like as well

Can't seem to get the touchpad working on this T14 G3 (AMD) after I wiped it and installed W10 LTSC on it, any tips? Went into the BIOS, it's enabled and working there, so it's not a hardware failure, but Device Manager doesn't list it. I've already installed the Synaptic Fingerprint Reader and ELAN Trackpoint drivers from Lenovo's website, and Commercial Vantage doesn't have anything for me to install, so I'm at a loss.

That's mostly because only early-ish T480 models with early-ish BIOS and an Intel-related firmware bug had the problem.
Only if the Thunderbolt firmware is low (<20.X) one might get a problem.
But since EVERY T480 can be fixed by just updating the firmware and possibly BIOS this is a no-brainer if you know what you're doing.

For Linux users:

1) sudo fwupdmgr get-devices

If audio was playing whatever samples were last in a buffer play in endless loop lol. If you're lucky it's RAM or SSD.
If you're unlucky it's the MB or CPU.
Check the SMART data of your SSD and after that try physically removing/moving the RAM.
After that I'd try replacing the SSD first and then the RAM.

You already know. KDE/Wayland will run fine if you turn down the frou-frou a bit, but it'll be tighter on ram for multitasking. DWM/X11 without compositing is going to tear a bit. You could use dwl instead.

Just bear in mind you will have to accept the fact the igpu for a sandy bridge processor is going to be weak.

If you can tolerate the amount of soldered ram that you get, it's fine. 16gb models are practically mandatory, don't even look at the 8gb models unless you're going to run a super minimal Linux and multitasking will be minimal. Battery life will be about 20% worse vs the Intel model, but the iGPU is better - as a consequence it also reserves more of your system ram for its use (like 2gb instead of 500mb, IIRC). Maybe a 10% handicap in single core vs Intel but the multicore is about 15% better. Screens are all IPS, try and get the low power or privacy guard ones, they have better color. AMD in this generation is still a little bit of a compromise. Whether you want to make those particular tradeoffs will be dependant on your specific use case.

Not entirely wrong, but the average for the i7-8650U there is driven by crusty devices running Windows with dried up thermal paste and clogged up fans. I get 7700 multi and 2400 single on an i7-8550U (T480s running Linux with tlp + thermald, default configs). I haven't even undervolted so I think this thing could push beyond 8000 multi without much stress. Not amazing but good enough for 4K media and emulation, container centric development, VMs now and then, real solid professional machine. Would not get a new one now, of course, there zre better options out there, but those who already have one can rest easy unless they have some crazy special needs.

I got my T480s years ago and maxed it out (40 GB + 4 TB) when prices were good, damn thing probably still worth 1k bucks today just for those two components kek

1) Get a roll of very wide painting/masking tape. Cheap one is a-okay
2) put that on your table sticky side up
3) make a raw pencil sketch of the parts you gonna remove
4) stick the screws you remove to their respective place on your masking tape sketch
5) never lose screws again, never mix them up.

The sticker on the SSD should face away from the motherboard. The WWAN slot has a B key and afaik all SSDs that fit it have both B and M keys.

Your pic shows a SATA SSD which won't work because the slot doesn't have SATA pins wired to it. For some reason it's hard to find NVMe SSDs of the right format in sizes above 512GB and almost impossible above 1TB. The easiest way to put 2TB there is a 2230 NVMe in a 2230 (M key) to 2242 (B+M key) adapter.

I'm putting a 16gb stick into my t14 gen 2 because it keeps freezing when I run a cumtown stream in the background of my open mw. I hope 24gb is enough. nta but that's what I did with my two T480 and my A485. thankfully none of them were affected by the Thunderbolt issue (they all had the firmware that had the issue but didn't meet the conditions for it to happen). updating with fwupd was easy
even if they were affected it's pretty easy to fix with a $2 chip programmer from aliexpress anyway

Screen size isnt everything. It's a fair heuristic, but some 13.3" laptops for instance have the same footprint as 11.5-12.5" legacy laptops. Bezels shrink. And everything has gotten thinner.

If you're not averse to tabletshit with detachable keyboards, those are probably the smallest. Otherwise you should be looking at X13/Z13/X1Nano.

The real question is what's your budget? Tiny costs money. They're not going to be as plentiful as standard-issue corpo 14" models you can buy off lease on the cheap.

That's a good point. I would say 80 to 150 bucks at most. The 11e I bought was for $118 ($109 + $9 tax) and was refurbished to have 8GB RAM with 256 SSD. It didn't seem like too bad a deal since there were laptops with lower specs being sold in stores for around the same price, if not more.

Maybe I should explore ancient netbooks to see if they're cheaper instead.

The difference between an X220 and a relatively recent X13 are minimal. Like 1/3" or less in L or W.

KDE is supposed to have the best touch/pen support, screen rotation detection, etc but I haven't spent much time with it.

If they don't tell you, invariably this means it's the shitty 768p TN screen. Some sellers are dumb but more of them play dumb and let you think you have a shot at the 900p screen. You don't. But if you're buying a T420/30 you should be doing the 1080p screen mod anyway.

usually after some time the trackpoint tends to drift off to a corner by itself and i have to reseat the nub. do i need a new nub or keyboard for this thing

Last time I had a detachable, I was in high school. I detached it on accident, it fell and broke the screen
Fortunately, parents bought an anti-retard protection plan so I got to choose a new laptop at the same price. I chose an Asus zenbook and never missed the detachable gimmick

I have a P52, bios is clocking the replacement battery as "non-genuine". seems the whitelist is on the ECM, and that can't be easily modded.
Looking around for a quality battery that passes the authenticity check.
I think it's an ECM thing you can't disable by just downgrading the BIOS right? Nothing in the BIOS changelogs suggest they ever added battery authenticity.

a few months ago I bought a T480 i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD, Nvidia GPU, for 175€ (it was missing the internal battery though so I had to add about 35€ for a new one)

The only improvement from T480s to T490 is a slightly better selection of screens. The T490 has worse modularity (soldered wifi, no second SSD), a less sturdy build and a smaller battery. Performance is the same unless you find one of the rare "T490" with a 6-core CPU, ie a pre-rebranding T14G1.

For T480 (non-s) to T490 you also lose the second RAM slot and second battery. And T495 could be a good compromise if you need better graphics than on a T480(s)/T490 but can't afford a T14G1.
