>>108109695i'm running fedora on a 2010 macbook pro that does web and word processing well enough, although i do inevitably run into a performance wall from time to time even when i was on a lighter DE, and especially when video was involved. would a t480 make sense to pick up or should i gun for something newer still?
to the kind folks that allowed me to consult them regarding a t14g1 with a 4750u in the last thread, the 16gb of ram was in fact soldered and not 8x8 it arrived in great condition and im very satisfied, will probably just get another 16gb ram stick as i think past 32gb is completely unneeded, but i could be wronghavent used windows in a few years and remembered why i hackintosh'd my surface laptop almost immediately :(
>>108109716Typing this from my T480, quad-core without GPU, Debian Xfce, ~70 tabs open in Firefox. The only times I find myself wishing for more performance are when watching unreasonably large videos e.g. 4K or compiling something gigantic like a browser. Watching videos up to FHD isn't a problem, even when doing something on the side, though the fan does spin up. HD video and light web browsing (without monstrosities like TikTok or New Reddit) can be done fanless.
All of these cheap chargers out there, I'm sure some of them are fake, right? They look very legit but are listed as NEW.Would it be bad to get a few used ones from an IT recycle shop instead? You pay the same price, its used, but you can be fairly certain you're getting a genuine lenovo one. Is that the better way to go?
>>108109923thx. ye deb with xfce's pretty damn weightless -- hell, it was the first distro i loaded on here, too -- though it seems we hit the same walls there too yea. ah well, guess i'll put a newer portable in the backburner and relegate the more intensive tasks to my pc in the meantime. perhaps i can buy the e16 i use at work off my company when i leave? hmm...
>>108109695got a t420s with 8gb ram and 128gb ssd for 80 bucks, decent deal or not?
>>108110722The real question is if you're satisfied with it. Laptops >10 years old that are still usable seem to plateau around this price point so you could have gone newer, classic features notwithstanding.
>>108111783i mainly bought it because of the old keyboard design + its european prices so theyre a bit higher than US prices anyways — 80 bucks was pretty much the lowest i could find that wasnt missing an ssd or had some defect haha
>>108109716to give another opinion: T480 i7, technically with Nvidia GPU but I disabled it entirely for battery life. running Artix xfceI don't struggle with performance at all on it and use it a lot more than my more powerful desktop (I like staying in bed with it kek). use it mostly for browsing, playing a few games like Blue Archive or Koikatsu (reminder: I disabled the Nvidia GPU, I do it all on the integrated graphics), image editing on Krita, and other general stuff. sometimes all of that at the same time. works really well for me and with the 72Wh external battery upgrade I get 10+ hours of web browsing on itthe default screen panel isn't very good but it can be modded very easily (the panel I have on mine is really good). I have an A485 on the side too that I like as well
>>108109716Unpopular opinion but the best T480 still gets rekt by a 4 year old Chromebook CPU.
why in the fuck are w530's so much money now. This shit is ewaste, i just want a k2000m motherboard.
>>108114416>the CPU that is 5 years newer is slightly betterlmao
I have a old obscure Thinkpad like a R50 or R52 that's not popular enough to have this 51nb board upgrade but it's dead and id like to make it somewhat useful again. I keep seeing everyone shill this pcbway service where you design your own PCB and they make it for you. How hard would it be to get some kind of pi or other sbc style setup to be a drop in replacement without sacrificing port arrangement, battery, the old keyboard, etc. I'm not hot gluing a bunch of cables to the case I'm talking about making a 1:1 bolt in solution
>>108111783Laptops plateau in price at around 5 years old. 10-12th gen business laptops are obtainable for $200 depending on model and basically anything in decent usable condition is worth $100.

Can't seem to get the touchpad working on this T14 G3 (AMD) after I wiped it and installed W10 LTSC on it, any tips? Went into the BIOS, it's enabled and working there, so it's not a hardware failure, but Device Manager doesn't list it. I've already installed the Synaptic Fingerprint Reader and ELAN Trackpoint drivers from Lenovo's website, and Commercial Vantage doesn't have anything for me to install, so I'm at a loss.
>>108115238youre retarded if you think that will be worth the time and money let alone be reasonably possible short of using an sbc and making some boards for status lights keyboard etc, which will be ass work still. Anyway I found you can shoehorn t61p mobo into most of the old gen stuff even the 14" t60 4:3, so you can get a nvidia fx570m and mod a quad2extreme to work in em, i bet that variety isnt much different inside. I had to sacrifice having a working optical drive when i used a widescreen board in a small and 4:3 t60 but i found an sata to ultrabay adapter that i cut down to fit and make use of it still with an msata drive

>>108114687It's only funny because some people hype the T480 as the best and final Thinkpad for all time and its computing power is, for all practical purposes, extremely marginal. It's funny to see people get memed into it.

>>108116193>people hype the T480 as the best and final Thinkpad for all timeThat's bullshit and you know it. 99% who like the T480 do it because the only other T-series ThinkPads available with completely unsoldered RAM are the latest T14 generations. The T480 is cherished because it's the (as of now) last ThinkPad that still retains some of the classic ThinkPad values like ruggedness and repairability. Nobody says its CPU is still hot shit. But to be fair: An i7-8650U with 32gb RAM is still more than enough for average tasks unless we're talking about 4k rendering. And it will be enough at least until the early 30s.
>>108116193its computing power is still more than enough for everyday tasks. nobody is saying it's the most powerful or the best Thinkpad ever, it's just nice because you can mod and upgrade it almost as much as you want, it's comfy to use, it's cheap, and it's overall a good experience. also as far as I know it's the most recent Thinkpad that can be librebooted, it matters to some people
>>108117743It depends on which features are important to you. Every model is a shitty compromise. If the T480's 8th gen Intel is too slow for you, you can get 1.5-2x the performance with similar modularity and input devices (but much worse max battery life) in a T14 G1 AMD.

>>108126113That's mostly because only early-ish T480 models with early-ish BIOS and an Intel-related firmware bug had the problem.Only if the Thunderbolt firmware is low (<20.X) one might get a problem. But since EVERY T480 can be fixed by just updating the firmware and possibly BIOS this is a no-brainer if you know what you're doing. For Linux users:1) sudo fwupdmgr get-devices>Check if Thunderbolt is there and what's the firmware ##2) sudo fwupdmgr get-updates>Check if updates are available3) sudo fwupdmgr updateThinkPad re-boots, installs the update, Thunderbolt bug is gone, everything's fine, open up a cold Coors Banquet.

My T420 started randomly freezing. How to fix this?
>>108129869What exactly do you mean by freezing?Regardless, step 1 is trouble shooting.
hoarderchad here, which thinkpad drivers would have the highest, and which the lowest, priority of being archived for future use? I am using https://download.lenovo.com/eol/index.html, I cannot imagine ALL of these thinkpad models are worth having drivers for, right? Strange that they dont have T430 drivers, I loved that model so much in 2014.
>>108129926Well I can't troubleshoot much because the freezes happen at random and they're fatal nothing gets written to the logs, not even Magic SysRq key works. If audio was playing whatever samples were last in a buffer play in endless loop lol. Must be hardware related although IIRC it started after kernel upgrade some time ago but I already forgot which version was it.
>>108130162Yikes, could be anything. If you're lucky it's RAM or SSD.If you're unlucky it's the MB or CPU.Check the SMART data of your SSD and after that try physically removing/moving the RAM.After that I'd try replacing the SSD first and then the RAM.Good luck.
Fujitsu has full-size SD card slots. Why can't Thinkpads?
>>108131846
i bought my first ever thinkpad two weeks ago (a p15)I love my thinkpad, it is a beautiful machine and I can upgrade components should the need arise. I am also for the first time in my life a linux user but that is a different story.Basically, I can see what all the fuss is about. It's so refreshing to use a big chonker that doesn't pretend to be something it's not. I can rely on this laptop and I think it's just neat.

on a thinkpad t420 with 8gb ram and hdd would kde with wayland run well or am i better off using dwm with x11? would screen tearing be an issue in that case?
>>108133673You already know. KDE/Wayland will run fine if you turn down the frou-frou a bit, but it'll be tighter on ram for multitasking. DWM/X11 without compositing is going to tear a bit. You could use dwl instead.Just bear in mind you will have to accept the fact the igpu for a sandy bridge processor is going to be weak.
>>108131846If you can afford a P16/P1 Thinkpad, it is an option.

>>108137164imo this is why you should opt for AMD which already puts the T480 out of consideration. >>108142054If you can tolerate the amount of soldered ram that you get, it's fine. 16gb models are practically mandatory, don't even look at the 8gb models unless you're going to run a super minimal Linux and multitasking will be minimal. Battery life will be about 20% worse vs the Intel model, but the iGPU is better - as a consequence it also reserves more of your system ram for its use (like 2gb instead of 500mb, IIRC). Maybe a 10% handicap in single core vs Intel but the multicore is about 15% better. Screens are all IPS, try and get the low power or privacy guard ones, they have better color. AMD in this generation is still a little bit of a compromise. Whether you want to make those particular tradeoffs will be dependant on your specific use case.
>>108114416Not entirely wrong, but the average for the i7-8650U there is driven by crusty devices running Windows with dried up thermal paste and clogged up fans. I get 7700 multi and 2400 single on an i7-8550U (T480s running Linux with tlp + thermald, default configs). I haven't even undervolted so I think this thing could push beyond 8000 multi without much stress. Not amazing but good enough for 4K media and emulation, container centric development, VMs now and then, real solid professional machine. Would not get a new one now, of course, there zre better options out there, but those who already have one can rest easy unless they have some crazy special needs. I got my T480s years ago and maxed it out (40 GB + 4 TB) when prices were good, damn thing probably still worth 1k bucks today just for those two components kek
>>108141851>got some screws confused, may have damaged the boardRemember Anons, there's a solution to this kind of problem:1) Get a roll of very wide painting/masking tape. Cheap one is a-okay2) put that on your table sticky side up3) make a raw pencil sketch of the parts you gonna remove4) stick the screws you remove to their respective place on your masking tape sketch5) never lose screws again, never mix them up.

Should we still name this a Thinkpad general? Why not just /lpg/ - Laptop general?Modern Thinkpads are not really better than other brands anyway.
>>108150424We know this, and people do generally treat it like a /lpg/, but try and make an actual thread named /lpg/ and watch it sail off to Page 10. It's been tried before, many times. The fact is, few have the type of autistic, encyclopedic knowledge of other non-Thinkpad product lines and thus they don't get much discussion. The occasional Dell or HP guy will stop in here and make recommendations or answer questions. What we really need is a comparison chart or category/budget "best of" list, kind of like the /o/ sticky. 14" or 16" laptop (in general)? The choice is unironically too hard for me. >>108153184This is the weirdest tech upgrade for me I could never understand why we had a decade of big box SATA SSDs when it turns out you can have a whole drive in your wifi adapter slot.
>>108153938The sticker on the SSD should face away from the motherboard. The WWAN slot has a B key and afaik all SSDs that fit it have both B and M keys.Your pic shows a SATA SSD which won't work because the slot doesn't have SATA pins wired to it. For some reason it's hard to find NVMe SSDs of the right format in sizes above 512GB and almost impossible above 1TB. The easiest way to put 2TB there is a 2230 NVMe in a 2230 (M key) to 2242 (B+M key) adapter.
>>108154393I would if I were you. It's not going to get better with use. If you paid a premium for "refurbished" then don't take a bordering-on "for parts" unit.
>>108154676Doesn't sound like libreboot is a dealbreaker if you're considering a gaymen laptop. What need is the X220 not meeting and/or what are you trying to do?
Holy shit, you guys didn't tell me the T14 Gen 2 was THIS slow, it's kind of wild. It's like, slower than my dogshit optiplex with a CPU that scores half of what the i5 1135G7 in this thing does. It's genuinely struggling to switch tabs in a timely manner, what on earth is going on? I even put an extra 16 gb of RAM in the damn thing.
>>108154692I had a 15.3’’ laptop for a while and always found it just a little too big. After using my X220 for years I moved to a 14’’ and will say that 14’’ feels like the correct size to me in terms of portability, especially when combined with a 16:10 screen.I couldn't imagine carrying a 16’’ around, I'd say only go for it if you need the beefier hardware otherwise go for a 14’’.
>>108156046The hardware should be plenty capable. Sounds like something isn't working right.Maybe a software issue?
bought a gen 5 X13 on a whim as a linux machine last year and very happy with it desu even if its not the thinkpads of old. Sure beats the 2019-2024 dumpster fire CPU era thinkpads

>>108157165Yellow one. Has that nice inventory sticker vibe.If you want maxxx realism you should put it on the underside though. That's where most corpos and gov organizations put such stickers because when they sell off older equipment removing the sticker doesn't damage the more visible surfaces of the PC. But then again: If you put it in a corner of the lid it's more visible and should do the trick too - at the end if the day it's not a real corporate/gov. computer
>>108152482True but it also has a worse keyboard
>>108150424It does feel like it's over for thinkpads, 10 years ago it was still fine to run the old ones but now it's becoming challenging and it feels more like a linux toy than a proper usable laptop.Sad. You need a get-me-by for what, another 2 years before the T14G5 gets reasonable? Then get a beater that fits your use case and don't dump a bunch of money and time into it. T480 is meme taxed and (you tell me, but...) you're going to get sucked into modding it and end up with something thats still old as fuck but your sunk cost is within spitting distance of the thing you said was too expensive to begin with. Don't do that to yourself, is all I'm saying. does anyone have experience with removing all default secure boot keys (the ones from microsoft and lenovo) and use secure boot solely with own keys?there is some fud in the arch wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface/Secure_Boot) about bricking your thinkpad.on my t14g5, there is an oprom for the intel graphics, but I cannot verify with which key it is signed.
Should this work on the T480(not S). There were reviews on the listing saying it should work out of the box. There's a slight gap compared to stock

I just feel like those old thinkpads are an important piece of hardware history, that I missed out on. I'm addicted to old thinkpad videos, their design and the quality is just cool.>x220Is at least usable in 2026 with an SSD and it would be cool to libreboot, install Gnu Guix and have fun. Recently got this NEC VersaPro Ultralite VG-7 with a 10510U while I was in Japan, and this guy is basically an X series ThinkPad under the hood. Debating which version of Linux to toss on it, to take advantage of that battery life.
>>108216354>no nipplenot a thinkpad
>>108217066I'm embarrassed by my lack of nips
usually after some time the trackpoint tends to drift off to a corner by itself and i have to reseat the nub. do i need a new nub or keyboard for this thing
Talk me out of getting this to replace my T480. Please.
>>108217634>talk me out of getting a detachable that can't be used in laptop form on a lap to replace my normal laptop
>>108217634is that a fucking gaming tablet?are you 12?
>>108218426gamblet
>>108217634Last time I had a detachable, I was in high school. I detached it on accident, it fell and broke the screenFortunately, parents bought an anti-retard protection plan so I got to choose a new laptop at the same price. I chose an Asus zenbook and never missed the detachable gimmick
Why haven't we got cheap salt batteries by now?Was it all just a meme?
>>108218495Chinese batteries are already cheap.
>>108217634>going from a Thinkpad to a gaming AsusWow, anon.
I have a P52, bios is clocking the replacement battery as "non-genuine". seems the whitelist is on the ECM, and that can't be easily modded.Looking around for a quality battery that passes the authenticity check. I think it's an ECM thing you can't disable by just downgrading the BIOS right? Nothing in the BIOS changelogs suggest they ever added battery authenticity.
>Charging port stops working on T14 exactly four days after the ebay money back guarantee expiresFuck. Am I screwed?
>>108219417my p15s did that at work. had to get the motherboard replaced.
>>108216354WEABOOOO
>>108109695>Oldest that takes 32 GB RAMHaha, yeah...
>>108219417>>108219432that was right before it wouldn't turn on anymore at all btw. about two months before that it also did it one time but i had to just clear the cmos. made it work for two months.
>>108214212Will the T580 do it? Also has WWAN
>>108220025yeah, it's basically the same machine as the T480 but with a larger screen and a numpad. even the batteries it uses are the same
>>108218077who the fuck uses laptops on their lap?>>108218426im interested in the 395+ with 128GB RAM for local AI, i dont gayme>>108218452>>108219340i dont care about the detaching keyboard, but i cant find real laptops with those specs. altho would be kinda neat to be able to use it in bed with this gooseneck arm tablet holder thing i have
>>108220036What should I be paying for a T480/490? All of them seem to be over the price guides, but the rampocalypse might be doing its thing
>>108220168120-180 usd lately for the usual quad-core, 8/256, FHDFriendly reminder that there's little reason to get a T490 if you can get a T480s or T495 with similar specs and price
>>108220168a few months ago I bought a T480 i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD, Nvidia GPU, for 175€ (it was missing the internal battery though so I had to add about 35€ for a new one)
I still remember buying my fully specced out T480 brand new for $1600. How time flies.
>>108220763Thank you for your service.
>>108220479Why is there no reason to go from a 480 to a 490?
>"anon the laptop I got from the client doesn't turn on after yesterdays update">no fanspin>no keyboard backlight>just the little power LED>disconnect the CMOS and main batteries>let it sit for an hour>thinkpad forgets whatever spergout it was having before and turns back on on again>"ohmygod thank you"This was the 4th laptop I "fixed" this way so far, thank to whoever gave me this tip a few months ago
>>108221114*I meant from a 480 to a 580
>>108221069Speaking of service, it's due for a battery replacement and some cleaning. Hopefully I don't get screwed with shitty batteries once again.
>>108220763Euros are still paying that for them today.
>>108221114The only improvement from T480s to T490 is a slightly better selection of screens. The T490 has worse modularity (soldered wifi, no second SSD), a less sturdy build and a smaller battery. Performance is the same unless you find one of the rare "T490" with a 6-core CPU, ie a pre-rebranding T14G1.For T480 (non-s) to T490 you also lose the second RAM slot and second battery. And T495 could be a good compromise if you need better graphics than on a T480(s)/T490 but can't afford a T14G1.>>108221157T5x0 is T4x0 with a numpad (some of them are literally the same motherboard in a different chassis) so it's just personal preference.
I need a laptop that's fairly capable for gaming (I'd settle for a good igpu), has good battery life and works well with linux. Does a device like that exist?
>>108221774Wow, you lose so much for 1 extra inchThe final debate for me would be T480 vs T495 vs T14 (Ryzen)
>>108221894I can get like 2 hours of battery on X280 playing 2007 games while Linux is working perfectly.Yippy.
>>108221894What games do you play? That determines how much (i)GPU power you need.>good battery life and works well with linuxAvoid Nvidia.
>>108222835>What games do you play? That determines how much (i)GPU power you need.mostly old games that should't have any issue running on a igpu. The most hardware taxing game i play is probably tf2.
>>108222882The AMD Radeon 680M and 780M have really good performance and can easily run TF2 at decent frame rates. What's your budget?
>>108219524Good thing I'm on 4chan
>>108222218get elitebook 845 it has a nipple, ryzen, 2 ram slots, and a replaceable dc jack + usb c charge if you want to replace motherboards.
