I'd argue over 70% of HDR-capable displays do not display HDR properly. While an interesting concept, due to garbage implementations of it across the board, it has been reduced to a marketing gimmick.

HDR requires an intersection of actually good hardware, support from the OS, and software that implements it correctly. If any one of those three is subpar, it won't be worth it.

HDR is definitely good for games. Definitely adds to the experience if the game supports and makes good use of it. Lighting and special effects like magic etc can look amazing.
Calling it a fad is just plain dumb.
