What's the state of it? Are the standards and clients mature enough to convince my normie friends to migrate to it?
How close is XMPP to what msn Microsoft was? to get an idea
>>108114060xmpp is likely the only goodguy protocol out there that can even come close to the functionality of discord while maintaining privacy.problem is its a bitch to deploy and maintain to get the good features like voice/video, and every single client for it is complete and utter dogshit that looks like it came out of 2009.someone please create a nice package for preconfigured xmpp and a modern client and i would give my left nut to use it.
>>108114164Is there some technical reason for the clients being dogshit beyond basic text? Or is it a lack of interest and initiative?
>>108114224it came about around the time all the cattle were flocking to large centralized services like myspace/facebook. no one really wanted to run bespoke stacks for chat services that they could get from social media tools that they already had. the protocol itself is used behind the scenes for lots of chat stuff but its build in to things like videogames and webchat services, not as standalone purpose built clients.it wasn't until like 2011+ that jingle (video/voice service for xmpp) started to get client compatibility and by the time it could have even caught on discord had already won the convenience game for voice. the best feature is the protocol itself and until somewhat recently that wasn't something anyone gave a single fuck about. now people are more privacy and freedoms minded and its not all purely about features and convenience.to answer your question there is no technical reason that clients look and behave the way that they do other than no one wanted to make them better... until now.
>>108114060a bunch of servers that haven't updated are about to break when letsencrypt certs go to server only
>>108114224>Is there some technical reason for the clients being dogshit beyond basic text? Or is it a lack of interest and initiative?low effort programmers basically. nobody gives that much of a fuck about xmpp like they do about irc so getting people to write software for xmpp that isn't cancer is apparently challenging to do right.>>108114284>discord had already won the convenience game for voice.>just ignore how skype, mumble etc. / bunch of other proprietary and open protocols existed for decades before pedophiles ever created discordcringe>>108114297lowest iq post of the month: confirmed and witnessed
>>108114443>skype, mumble etc.and where are they now? do you not agree that discord essentially swallowed their use cases and users?
>>108114577>where are they nowdoes it matter? your remaining iq point would like us all to believe that a bunch of furry pedophiles did something revolutionary, that in your meth soaked mind is irreplaceable and unique, which is fucking baffling considering what came before it. and since discord is run by the same pedophile fucking morons now demanding id from everyone, they've turned themselves into skype by default. congratulations!
>>108114618so you're saying discord did nothing new at all, had no ux or feature benefits over other alternatives, and yet somehow managed to garner an outrageously huge userbase? i guess they used pedo jew magic and put everyone under a spell, right anon? why else would they have chosen that over skype?I know its fun to be an internet contrarian but at least try to have a half-baked take next time.
>>108114644Well marketing and networking are more important then tech itself, let's not kid ourselves
can anyone recommend a better xmpp stack? prosody or openfire or what? what's the easiest method to deploy and get jingle and a turn server for video/voice working?
>>108114060>XMPPunc chat
>>108114644>so you're sayinguh oh. the discord pedophile isn't coping very well with how his favourite grooming platform is a replaceable and unoriginal pile of trash. that's a shame.
>>108114659discord's entire existence was created via marketing and advertising via prostitute streamers on twitch and youtube.
>>108114443>bunch of other proprietary and open protocols existed for decades before pedophiles ever created discordAnd they were all crap when compared to Discord and had no use case outside neckbeard/tranny tech bubbles. When Discord came around it had everything that all of the crap options had or tried to have and in a better way. And that's enough for the cattle hence the popularity
>>108114757>they were all crapthey all worked, had many millions of people using these various proprietary or open protocols. we do apologize that they didn't have user interfaces that attracted child sex offenders to maximize their grooming potential. it just makes your infected gash where your genitals used to be twitch with fury knowing that this cancer is replaceable and unoriginal.
>>108114775>had many millions of peopleLmao
>>108114788>the discord pedophile isn't copinglmao
>>108114792>he still thinks the mentioned crapware had any relevance
>install server package>set the port it listens to>start server>clients can now connectWhy can't hosting XMPP be simple as this?t. massive retard
>>108114876IRC is like that
>>108114937Can irc handle video calls and streams?
>>108114937I know. All these other fancy systems require domains and certificates and other advanced stuff.
>>108114990Why would it need to? You can use Jitsi or OBS+RTSP server for those things.
>>108115031I can manage it but having it all in one is important for getting my non tech friends to do stuff.
>>108115037They use a different app to make calls than the app they use to send sms and another still to watch online videos, why would it be any different to use separate apps for text chats and voice chats?
>>108115027domains and certificates are what keep your service actually privateirc can be locked down too but out of the box it has basically no security
>>108115062Fair argument, I'll point this out to them.
>>108115064Free subdomain from https://freedns.afraid.org/ free ssl cert from https://certbot.eff.org/ IP cloaking by default + TOR hidden service support and modern ircv3 features like message history and offline messages from https://github.com/ergochat/ergoNot too much more locking down needed, and all you have to supply to a third party to set it up is an email.
>>108115121Adding to this, senpai halloy kiwiirc and goguma are ircv3 supporting clients that will let you have synced usernames and chat histories across devices when used with an ircv3 server like ergo, they are cli desktop web and mobile respectively with halloy and kiwiirc both having some media embedding support.kiwiirc as a progressive web app is probably the most normie friendly since you're hosting it yourself with your ircd you can configure all the connection details automatically so they don't have to do more than enter a nick and password.
