hey /pcbg/ i know u fags is more capable of troubleshooting than the rest here
my pc freezes during gaming, and after reviewing the event log, found that the nvidia stuff started acting up. Then, after switched to the backup gpu (using lower power), no error log since. The question is, is my gpu or power supply about to fail?

it's interesting how few people it takes to make a general worthless and how pervasive the problem is across the entire website. There's literally always at least one super dedicated autist squatting in any given general that everyone agrees would be better off dead.

I got the 9800x3d combo from Microcenter last month(came with the ASUS B650e-e and 32gb Crucial 6000mhz). NewEgg has a 9850x3d combo with just the cpu and some other RAM brand I've never heard the name of but it's 32gb and 64000mhz. I haven't opened any of them yet as I don't have everything, but thinking of just selling the 9800x3d for a small lose and getting the 9850x3d instead. Might sell the Crucial RAM too or just hold onto it just in case.
Thoughts?

Something about my build is busted, and I don't think I'm wrong but I want a sanity check:
>Z590i Asus board
>11900k
>2 nvme drives
The first one should use the 4 lanes from the CPU, and the second one (at PCIe 3) should use the 4 lanes from the chipset.
So why then is my GPU running at 8x instead of 16? There should still be 16 lanes to go around for the GPU right?
>>
Talk me out of getting a x870 board to replace my b650e board.
>>
>>108116652
The x16 slot on that board doesn't share lanes with anything else so check whether your GPU is missing a capacitor near its pcie connector or if it's fully seated into the slot
>>
>>108116520
I'd do it
9800x3d gets the worst binned x3d silicon and the bad ones are really bad, I know that since I have one of the worst pulls out of the silicon lottery
>>
>>108116664
It seems fully seated and seems intact, but what was weird was the hwinfo showing something like PCIe 5.0 8x @ PCIe 4.0 x8, so let me check bios and see if it's set on auto or something weird.

>>108116673
I don't have any other cards to test with at 16x, but even after a cmos clear in bios it says x8 for the slot, so seems like an unintended """feature""" for the board. Thankfully this is just for AI stuff so if the model takes a bit longer to load into memory I don't think I'm that worried.

I made a mistake

I haven't got a laptop in a long time and I'm wondering something before I buy one.
Do remote control app sucks like they did maybe around ten years ago, maybe more?
I have this rig that does everything I need but I'll be a lot on the road this year. I will often need to connect through coffee/bars wifi.
My work revolves around 3D modeling/coding.

Any laptop recommendation as well, around 1000-1500€

What's the point of the 9070 XT?
9070 non-XT is only about 10% slower, draws 30% less power, and is about 20% cheaper
if you need XT level perf you can flash the XT BIOS (software flash works now, no external programmer needed)

XT still has more CUs. That being said yeah they fucked their market segmentation up by not having the non-XT differ in other ways that couldn't be overcome through firmware shenanigans. I've never bothered trying to set stuff that's access up outside local network myself.

this is assuming your lcd last forever and won't break down because everything is built like shit, this also assumes if you buy some shit like miniled don't cause failure and make it unusable like dead backlights, even tho not catastrophic failure makes the screen unusuable, as rtings already proved oled is more reliable than miniled tvs

buying new more durable oleds with more layers how long will it last before burn in becomes noticable in day to day and annoying? nobody knows. or pixels die en masse, nobody knows

if you get 3-5 years of use out of any tech before if you use like a tv and the power supply dies you would consider yourself lucky

are you really gonna spend half a decade or a decade with an inferior tech just because of seething about burn in? up to you

do you also leave the rest of your life non raytraced?

only test is to buy it and try with your use case
nobody is forcing you to use oled for writing in a text document all day either
but if you only want and could have one display would you really?

Replacing the standoff and screw should only be a 50 cent job, the biggest concern I have is the years-long bend on the PCB from heatsink and fan sag due to the lack of reinforcement. I wonder if this was the cause of white/black artifacting in desktop I RMA'd the card for early last year, for which MSI in Germany said "works on my machine" and I haven't seen them since.

Please, I need help with case fans.
I'm planning to buy Arctic P14 PWM PST ARGB. I was checking my motherboard (B550 Phantom Gaming 4) if it's "compatible" but I'm not sure if I'm understanding correctly.
Help me understand, please. From vids I gather these fans have 2 connectors, one for power that goes into CHA_FAN (4 pins) and another for LED that goes into ADDR_LED (3 pins) not RGB_LED (4 pins). I will buy the pack that allows daisy chain connection so checking the motherboard guide, the ADDR_LED has a max 3A (5V) and the CHA_FAN says a max of 2A (24W).
According to the official site, these fans need 5V and 12V for power. While 5V for LED. So LED is fine but power is not? Is there any issue with daisy chain 3 fans into 1 connector?
Sorry if these questions are too stupid.

Built my pc a few months ago, have had no real issues so far but twice now once a few weeks ago and just now when I first turn my pc on in the morning I'll see a little orange glowing light on my motherboard on the top right corner and it will take about 20 seconds longer for it to boot up. The light goes away but I'm worried it could be a sign of something going wrong.

>buy a 32" 4k monitor
And then I set a smaller than 200% HiDPI scale.
200% == 1080p space
150% == 1440p space
100% == 4k space
I honestly haven't thought of that, but I can also just buy a 1440p monitor.

So far I was thinking of buying:
1. 16:10 BenQ RD240Q | 2560 x 1600
2. 2x 16:9 monitor set vertically forming a 18:16 display.
3. 2x21:9 monitors set vertically forminng a 18:21 monitor.
4. Cheap old 4:3 monitor.
5. Above but also cheap 16:9 monitor.

I just have a 14" 16:10 thinkpad I use at 100% scale and I miss not having the same amount of vertical space on my big format monitor.

the only negatives are non traditional pixel matrix, possible eye strain (can happen with any other tech too), if manufacturer implements dog shit firmware that interrupts your work flow for no apparent reasons or pixel refreshes in your clutch pvp game

>>108119385

Most games are more worried about the GPU than CPU, so I'd try to go for the 5070ti if you can find a good price. It'd also be easier to switch out, but that depends on your PSU as well.
Unless you just happen to be playing some of the few games that are more CPU intensive, then you might go for the 9800x3d.
>>
>>108117640
What are you on about? Anons that bought a 5070 Ti 16Gb a month ago or more are enjoying a GPU that keeps gaining value. They can sell it right now and make a profit. Said profit is only going to get bigger this year and maybe the next. You and I buy any other GPU and it instantly lose 25% in value. They are gaming for free.

Check within bios for most accuracy, sometimes windows can get it wrong
Best to just go to the UEFI bios and see on the top right settings
Consult your manual
If your bios is older than the November release update it at least to November if you're scared
Reminder it may reset settings so save a Settings profile to USB or onboard memory before you flash new BIOS otherwise you'll have to redo the EXPO/XMP and fan curves and boot order etc

Since your mobo doesn't have a November update it's either September or January (1.2.03g or 1.3.0 pre)
I'd suggest going to the early January 2026 bios or if you want to play safe, stick to September and watch for the new BIOS to drop in the next month

You mean no HDR? Which doesn't matter to me as I've never tried. I've already canceled the order regardless. It seemed like I'd have to baby the monitor and I just don't feel like doing that. I'll just wait until I can get more space, a new desk, and I can use it sparingly. By then I'm sure the tech will improve more too.
>>
>>108116493
Intel's upcoming desktop products will have a lot more cache, but intel(kek) then, no reason to look at their CPUs for gaming unless you can get one cheap and plan to use or reuse DDR4. DDR4 compatibility is the one saving grace right now
>>
real question here pcbros, I have a nas and ofc I bought 4 CMR 8TB disks for it, but I want to replace the old 2 and 3 TB disks I have on my pc for bigger ones, should I get CMR NAS-rated disks? they are very fucking loud and I use windows so they are always active (I know in linux you have to wake up the drive yourself)
and what size should I get? honestly feels weird to get smth like a 16TB drive for a computer because it's too big, what should I aim for the max size?
>>
>>108120636
You don't run HDR on desktop; HDR is only for games and video when they have it
>>
>>108120671
Oh. I guess that makes sense. I remember trying it with my current monitor, but my current one just has the barely required amount to count as HDR and I didn't care for it.
>>
>>108120658
Personally I would say keep the bulk storage on the NAS and go SSD only on the local machine
Sadly there is the reality of current SSD prices
Hard to really recommend a size since I don't know your storage requirements, but larger drivers will be more bang for buck
>>
>>108120722
should I go for with SMR drives, assuming the make less noise than CMR drives? the 2 and 3 tb drives I have here are both SMR and lasting like 14 years and 11 years respectively, still working
>>
>>108120752
I don't think SMR is inherently quieter
>>
>>108120658
If you plan to keep your PC on 24/7, maybe. Otherwise if you want extra space and still don't want to spend the money on current flash storage then you could still look into WD Black HDDs. They're "gamer" rated and should be CMR too. It's been a while since I used one but they're 7200rpm so they'll probably be a bit noisy. I would just use it to keep non-essential stuff, maybe like video game recordings or smaller games, while keeping the rest on the flash storage.
>>
>>108120781
oh no, I don't like performance drives, it's just for storing useless stuff and also for all downloads, I like to throw all downloads I make on the drives so instead of them wearing my nvme ssd pc drive they wear the drives instead, sounds petty but over many years it makes a huge difference
>>
>>108120781
>>108120831
If you don't like 7200 drives what do you use for drives like you said that's both reliable but also good to reduce wear on your SSD?
Can you give some examples?
NAS type drives are 5400rpm??

I've bought the 9950X3D, thanks for the help some anons in previous threads provided me. The final build was:
>9950X3D
>Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE
>2x32GB 5600 MT/s CL36 Hynix A (will try my hands at putting this to 6000 MT/s)
>MSI B850 Tomahawk Max
>Cougar Polar X2 1050W (ATX 3.1 ver, Cybernetics Platinum)
The whole build started when I saw the memory sticks at what I assumed was wrong priced at 250 USD each (direct conversion from the currency of my country). It's not a GREAT price historically but given current developments, it's better than the current norm.
I'm keeping my SSDs, case (bought a Lian Li 217 last year) and the 6800 XT for the time being. Main use cases are hobby programming, virtualization, web infrastructure stuff, casual gaming. Hopefully this build will last me 9 years just like my current Ryzen 1700 did.

>>
>>108120872
Any "reliable" suggestions? I still have an old habit of buying WD black drives but due to the cascading effects these hard drives are also being jacked up in price but I also was lucky that they have all last 5+ years like they should
But I have 3 drives ready to hit 5 years and am ready to consolidate into one drive + get a mirror (for a docking external) but I don't want a HDD that's going to fail in one year like Seagate
What other WD or Toshiba (I heard they're reliable) models are good 5400/cheaper just for large media storage?
>>
>>108120896
I always only bought seagate and toshiba drives, they've never failed me, the 2 SMR drives I have 10+ years old and seagates, but others have difference experiences, the general rule is to buy CMR drives because they last longer and I wouldn't buy 7200rpm because hdds should only be used for storage and I like to minimize noise

first thing you should do, update the BIOS to latest and set the curve optimizer to -20, you'll drop temps and increase performance. Aside from that make sure to set the VSOC voltage manually to 1.1v to 1.2v at most, that should give you a good bit of headroom.

all PCIE is backward compatible, you can plug a Gen5 GPU into a Gen1 board no problem. The thing you need to watch out for is if you buy a New GPU and it only has PCIE 4x or 8X combined with the lack of Resize-bar support on older motherboards leads to really bad performance.

Technically NAS rated drives do have good durability as they're meant for systems running 24/7, but if you don't plan to run your system 24/7 then I wouldn't spend the money on them. WD Blacks are 7200 rpms because that means the content will load faster and that's what gamers want.
If you want a cheaper storage drive for more non essential stuff, look into drives like WD Blue. For the record the other companies like Seagate have comparable drives for the same market. I've just always used WD so I don't recall the branding names for the others. I think Barracuda is Seagate's WD Black.

All these Newegg bundles really makes me wonder what's going on with ram.(No it doesn't.) You get tons of them where the price of ram is lowered to $150 on average for 32gb of DDR5. Maybe everyone is right. Even if the current business needs for datacenters is real, it still was an excuse to inflate ram prices and then try to dump stock in the disguise of discounts to produce better sales records.

I had an air cooler and it was indeed "enough" but I don't like it's fans spinning up on every spike in CPU temp and this happens all the time because with the 5800X3D the VCache is on top of the CCD. This makes me nervous. The large heat buffer of the radiator evens this out. The fan curve is adjusted to the temperature measured inside the radiator fins with two flat sensors near the in/out tubes.

Their Duronaut paste works perfectly with an ALF3 420 to keep my PBOCed 9950X3D cool. It never even scratches 80°C under full load, never throttles.
The high viscosity of the paste requires it to be heated to make it spreadable. I applied a fingerprint thin layer only, just as recommended (not pictured, it would be a visible gray film). It's supposed to be very long lasting. Hence the name "Duro..".

I also installed their contact frame to protect the SMDs on the CPU, ease thermal paste cleaning and (potentially) improve the even contact of the cooler with the HS.

Which ones? Of the CPU? Never heard of this. Can you post a source? Preferably no reddit rumor.

> isn't compatible with a lot of air coolers
I'd never consider an air cooler for use with a 16-core. Why would I accept it throttling when I can prevent it?
I strongly recommend a contact frame as it protects the SMDs of the CPU against accidental mechanical damage. Like it would be possible during the installation of the cooler. People here often say they are too retarded to install an ALF...

> SMDs okay with getting a little bit of paste
If a paste is not conductive it shouldn't be a problem on the SMDs but who wants a sticky mess there or fluids potentially leaking into the socket?

A contact frame makes everything safer, cleaner, more rigid. Well worth the small money for it even if not absolutely necessary.

Well I already installed an air cooler on my 9800 without a contact frame

But I did use the Noctua plastic frame so hopefully it helps a little bit
But I was too scared to go contact frame as a novice
Plus reviews said some of the Thermalright contact frames were too tight and popped the CPU out somehow or had too much of a gap for any sort of benefit

And I cannot remember where I read but something related to air coolers or AMD CPUs said contact frames would void warranty as it wasn't really needed like current Intel where the CPU gets convex in the original ILM(?) frame

I'm using Kryosheet on my 9950X3D, it /works/, but it's only a tiny bit better performing than the best pastes according to reviews.

I just wanted to try it. Was very easy to use with the included oil in the kit, went on in ~3 seconds.
