Is the ATH-M50x a good budget headphone for casuals? Mainly just for video games, listening to music and general desktop use.
>>
How much do you think it would cost to get a custom made headphone? Would any major brand do it or would you have to find some shady guy in a garage somewhere? If you don't want super high tech just something that fits custom and has a custom cup size do you think it's something that could be done for less than 5 grand? I don't have that kind of cash but I'm just curious if anyone has done it or knows someone who did and what were the results.

As in you need something to fit your head, or oddly-shaped pads that fit your ears? Because there are people that make 100% custom pads to order, and with off-the-shelf drivers and 3D printed parts you can make some really decent custom headphones already.

The headphones available in the market already cover pretty much everything from on-ear to extremely spacious. What the fuck do you want that doesn't already exist, are you an ogre?
>>
>>108176731
>are you an ogre
Sort of, I've never been able to wear caps normally even when I was young. It's not freakishly large like you would stare at me but it's just too wide and almost nothing is made to fit me naturally.
I was here earlier I'm the one who got the Hifiman XS and JDS atom stack. It's working but even though the XS was already absurdly large I had to bend it quite a bit for it to be comfortable on my head.
I was looking at it just now and there is no way I could ever return it they would say I broke it. The ear cups are too big though, I would prefer something more like the sennheiser 600's but maybe a half inch or inch wider.

I just wish I could wear headphones like a normal person and not have to worry if they will fit me. It really sucked not being able to choose one I wanted and my only options were the biggest bulkiest beasts they make.
It's not the end of the world, what I have is working for me and it's a huge step up from what I had before. Was just musing to myself if it was possible if I had enough money to get something that was made to fit me instead of me having to fuck something up to make it fit. I don't want to 3d print something though I don't know anything about that or even have access to one. I'll never be that deep in the hobby, it's fine I've learned to live with my disability.

A LOT of people say they're generally one of the worst headphones you can buy. A lot of people say that IEMs have replaced closed backs and you should ONLY listen to open back headphones unless you're doing film work or live sound monitoring. Old-school "cans" like M50X have largely been abolished.

looking to potentially replace or supplement my DT770s, they will be 99% of the time for music (metal, shoegaze, hip hop, D&B, jazz, blues, classical - kind of a mix so nothing that leans towards a particular genre) and 1% very rarely for vidya. Source will either be CD or FLAC via a DAC

I currently have a schiit magni and a pair of DT770 pros, the latter of which ive had since 2017 and have so far been my only "good" headphones I like them, they are comfortable and i like the isolation so i am looking for a similar size and form factor but ultimately wondering what the logical upgrade is.

Appreciate the advice, and it's not that bad really I'm happy with what I have. For most mechanical keyboard fans that noise is part of the appeal. And if you are weird and don't like it there are tons of silent or quiet options. I wasn't even aiming for it but ended up with a mostly silent board. It's not a real problem.

I use semi-open, can't complain. I have no one around so leaked sound isn't a problem, but I do appreciate better headphones sound compared to closed backs.
>mechanical keyboards
Heavily depends on the switches and overall construction. I don't like loud keyboards myself, but my low-profile kb is fairly quiet out of the box.
>>
>>108181441
To elaborate on this, I also use Topre keys so you don't even hear it. I didn't have an issue back in the oldhead days with my 598s and a Cherry Blue Das Keyboard though, you're just an autistic sperg and self-owning yourself if you find keyboard noise annoying. That's a problem you created, why opt for worse sound with closed/ANC when you could have just gotten silent keys?
>>
>>108181373
Keyboard noise is like BO, its only annoying when its someone else.

>>
>>108182011
You can probably run 90-95% of DD/Planars through a dongle.
>>
>>108182011
Sure, even by ASR's admission the chips in dongles are meh at best and you're gonna get shit like this happen- https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/on-the-distortion-of-cirrus-logic-cs431xx-based-devices-a-comparative-review.63038/
Dongle issue is going to always be shelf life and convenience, on a desktop PC they're honestly cancer to use but on a laptop/phone they're ace.
>>
>>108182054
>on a desktop PC they're honestly cancer
how so? noise floor?
>>
>>108182134
Yeah pretty much that. Stuff like a Synapse/Max fixes it but it's pointless when you can just run an AIO to a desktop setup and skip that. Better cable management too, and I like how my amp looks so subjective wise there's that too ig (not that it actually means anything for performance).
>>
>>108181946
Why get worse keys? Because your kind of people is also in the keyboard space telling people to get loud switches. Every consoomerist space thinks it needs to be the most important. Maybe we should have the tard “hobbies” in a single thread so they can sort themselves out.

>>
>>108182686
Who are you implying is in charge? It's pretty open season right now.

ASR maybe 5-6 years ago ran everything, but it's been all downhill since the L30 and MQA stuff and the new DX5II issue seem to be the final straw for most people. They couldn't even muster the typical 50-page hate train for the last Schiit product he reviewed. People are genuinely tapped out on what Amir is trying to sell them and that forum moves at a snail's pace now, with nothing but Topping troubleshooting going on.

Headphone Show is creeping into the objective market share for content, and people 50/50 on stuff just go read SBAF. I wouldn't say any one site or Youtuber has a strong hold on the headphone space, and it definitely isn't HF or ASR anymore.

HF's only purpose now is to host CanJams (which are good to be fair) and for boomers to post 5/5 reviews on gear which barely works or is unobtanium.

And that's also the thing, I've always had pretty sensitive hearing and a hard time with any remotely V-shaped stuff, it's more or less fatiguing. But with this setup it's slightly frightening how loud I can push without feeling discomfort. Shit is so colored foam isn't needed.
I still can't believe this isn't EQd. It plays very well with all kinds of music and crap recordings.

I'm looking for advice on what in my system to update

I pieced together my first and current setup to get something functional from components I got for free from acquaintances over the years and I'm looking to upgrade it to improve sound quality. I have the setup in a small/medium sized living room, and I'm willing to buy used.
>Previous gear and your thoughts on it
Current setup is:
speakers on stands: Sony SS-EC 69i - not full enough sound, poor bass
power amp: NAD monitor series 2400 - i keep the volume low because this thing could blow my speakers, I have nothing to compare it to
receiver: Yamaha RX-385 - it's fine I guess, it's a volume dial for me, that's about it. I don't know jack.
turntable: AT-LP2D with AT-95E cartridge - I like the auto-start , and the tonearm lift button is convenient. I suspect the needle is worn down. It's functional but tired.
I also have a CD player, but rarely use it.

I'm most considering adding a subwoofer and/or getting new speakers, but I'm not sure if I should consider getting a new turntable or preamp/receiver/whatever, the only thing I wouldn't really consider changing is the power amp, which I think is quite capable from my limited understanding (from the specs). Some way for guests to play music from their phones (bluetooth?) might be nice. I like to listen to a wide variety of genres including classical and organ stuff and I think my setup suffers from a lack of low frequency coverage. Any advice or roasting is appreciated.

Sennheisers don't need an amp. You're deaf.

You understand he made this video so he could start shilling his own dongles and collab with JCally, right? He doesn't believe a word of this.

I should mention, I have only the two front speakers right now. I have the option of adding two surround speakers, someone ran speaker wire already to the corners on the back wall.
