Well duh. The whole campaign to remove GNU and free software from anything associated with the OS was very deliberate. These people wanted to attract businesses and they couldn't have them thinking about the philosophy of the software, they wanted to advertise cost savings and practicality so businesses would actually adopt it. (This was captured quite well in the Revolution OS documentary)

I don't think they realized how much that hurt user freedom and awareness in the long run. Most people still don't know how much damage using and depending on proprietary software does, and the freedom they are missing out on. Mostly because they never associated open-source with freedom, so they didn't see its importance.
