Can you do the GNU Terminology Challenge? Go one week without using any of these words (incorrectly) and use only GNU approved terms when talking about these topics.https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html
linguistic purity happens only in cathedrals, not on bazaarsthe list is self-defeating which explains why linux is thriving and stallman is hiding

>>108180844Stallman is such a joke, he's spending his twilight years arguing semantics and not budging on non-free JavaScript which has prevented him or any of his followers from leading a normal life. There's being a foss zealot, and then there's turning FOSS into a restrictive cult basically the computing equivalent of becoming raw vegan.
>>108180844you really need to have a troon brain or some mental disorder to give a shit about that garbage lmao
>>108181356Yeah exactly. This is the most autistic thing I ever read and I've spent most of my life with computer people and I also pretty sure I'm autistic as well.
>>108181466This goes way beyond just word choice, stallman is on the losing end of a culture war, look no further than how artists all freaked out over adobe animate being discontinued and quickly moving to CSP despite being just as bad, at no point was Krita or any foss program considered, artists don't really use krita because the overlap between linux nerds and artists is very small, artist app reviews often mention krita in passing, "I heard of it but nobody I know uses it", they really don't have understand nor care about having their tools being rug pulled out from under them, they will just jump to to the next one because everyone else is doing it.
>>108180844Here is a summery the most commonly misused terms and their proper term(s) for the context it's commonly used in.>Ad-blockersurveillance protection>AccessWith free software users don't have "Access" they have the essential freedoms and control over the program>Alternativenonfree software and SaaSS aren't an alternative to free software because they subjugate users, so they should not be described as one>Artificial Intelligence"LLM" = Bullshit generator"Generative AI" = Generative systemNone of these are AI because they have no semantic understanding whatsoever. They are just machine learning systems.>AssetsAvoid altogether because it dismisses their value to society aside from commercial value>BSD-styleLeads to confusion. Use the specific license in question.>ClosedProprietary or nonfree>Cloud ComputingDo not use the term cloud. Use a specific term like SaaSS or renting a remote virtual or physical server.>Commercialdon't use "commercial" as a synonym for nonfree. They are different issues. free software can be sold and used commercially.>CompensationDo not use the term compensation for authors in connection to copyright>ConsumeUsing the term consume to refer to artistic works is to treat them as commodities rather than as art. >>108180844Even though I love Stallman I can't ever get myself to replace saying "Linux" with "GNU (Plus|Slash) Linux" in daily life, it's just too clunky.

>>108183639The funny thing is that the GNU/Linux distinction is actually quite useful to separate it from Android.
>>108183717>The funny thing is that the GNU/Linux distinction is actually quite useful to separate it from Android. You mean AOSP/Linux, right? Android is just an AOSP/Linux distro that includes GMS and is certified by Google for certain devices.

>>108181268Adhering to Free Software philosophy is a choice. As Stallman has said it: everyone is free to use non-free software. His entire thing is that he wanted a world in which people didn't have to use it if they didn't want to.>>108181580Krita is drawing software, not animation software.>>108183639>>108183717>>108183949This is precisely why the desktop OS should be commonly referred to as "GNU". Nobody says "Android/Linux" or "ChromeOS/Linux" only when it comes to GNU the Torvalds cultists and Red Hat shills insist that it should be called simply "Linux" because they want to take all the credit for themselves and push open source garbage instead of Free Software.Well duh. The whole campaign to remove GNU and free software from anything associated with the OS was very deliberate. These people wanted to attract businesses and they couldn't have them thinking about the philosophy of the software, they wanted to advertise cost savings and practicality so businesses would actually adopt it. (This was captured quite well in the Revolution OS documentary)I don't think they realized how much that hurt user freedom and awareness in the long run. Most people still don't know how much damage using and depending on proprietary software does, and the freedom they are missing out on. Mostly because they never associated open-source with freedom, so they didn't see its importance.
