I remember playing driver on GBC which required me to look at the pause map because no minimap, and horrible arrow, and also driver on PSX with great minimap. All in all, I can use GPS or look in static map. I usually look the route on map first, overall, where the GPS is telling me to go, if it's good, then I go my way (which may or may not be what it suggested) but keep it there in case there's some blockage or something and I need to readjust.
