>didn't buy into "enthusiast" VR and 3D printer tech during their hype to avoid the Osborne effect
>expecting to now buy into a mature field with well supported, affordable consumer tech
>actually the slump in demand means nobody made a "definitive" version of either and they're still janky overpriced toys
>>

wait for 10k displays.
>>
>>108184623
Enthusiast VR wasn't really a thing. I mean there were some niche headsets here and there which made some attempt at it but since Faceberger came out with the Quest the majority of the market was in a race to the bottom and full of nearly nothing but shovelware on the software side.
>>
>>108184623
your post only applies to vr, not 3d printing. 3d printing has matured as far as expired patents will allow it to if you get a high end bambu labs printer.
>>
>>108184623
3D printers are fine if you can afford the professional models.

"""VR""" is straight up garbage and I've been calling it since the 2012 oculus kickstarter.
Headmounted displays with motion controllers are still a very primitive gimmicky version of VR with extemelly nich applications.
A quality traditional setup is far more immersive than even the highest end VR systems.
I wouldn't bother until holodecks or neural interfaces are real.

Bambu is nsa spyware and logs everything you print.
>>
>>108184623
As much as I despise Apple, I was hoping they would force their army of mindless drones to buy into the Vision Pro which would start the bandwagoning from other corps trying to play catch up, but not even they could get it going.
>>
>>108184738
>run machine in offline mode and never connected to the internet
>somehow logs everything i print and sends it to the nsa
ok chump, just get a prusa instead.
>>

If you want to try VR, PSVR2 plays good with SteamVR. It's a mature device that works relatively well. It's also relatively cheap.

Not him and not a tinfoil hat but
>Program wifi stack to automatically connect to unsecured wifi in the background if not connected by user or if connection can't phone home
>Include dirt cheap cellular hardware with esim to be able to evade any reasonable method of users blocking access (you can get unlimited 5g for $50 a month, they'll absolutely cut multimillion/billion dollar companies a deal)
>>
i was really hoping 3d cameras would catch on
>>
>>108184927
you uhhh know you can just open up the case and look for that hardware yourself right? you can just unsolder the first one and the second doesn't exist on any of them.
>>
>>108184623
all vr companies are working with military now
>>
What's the current state of VR in Linux? I have a Lenovo Explorer that I haven't used in a few years but would like to try again.
>>
>>108184739
That think was a nuke against the industry, they purposively made it shit and expensive.

Prove that this has ever happened.
>>
>>108184623
get a hp reverb g2. they cost like 125 bux. there is a driver for it on steam.

I just saw an old thread on reddit showing the displays in the quest 3 were quit a bit sharper.
I've been considering the pico 4 and the quest 3 right now. losing hope the frame is going to release any time soon.
>>
>>108184623
3D printers and printing is doing fine.
VR is still a meme.
>>
>>108184623
unfortunately for most of /g/, it is going to be Meta who bring the best vr and ar equipment.
>>
What's the blueprint for an actually decent VR game?
>t. Odyssey+ user who hasn't touched his headset in years
>>
>>108187207
hl alyx and sim racing with dd wheel
>>
>>108184738
So it really is mature tech.
>>
>>108184623
>>expecting to now buy into a mature field with well supported, affordable consumer tech
ender 3
quest 2
>>
>>108187207
any half decent existing game but with a vr mod.
like resident evil remakes + 7 and 8, or alien isolation. no motion controls. no full body nonsense. just sitting there with mouse and keyboard and a vr headset on is my proffered VR experience.
>>
VR is gimmick shit
3d printers are tools, not toys
Do you need custom made plastic stuff? Do you want them? Then get a 3d printer
Never get a VR set though, it's absolute bullshit
>>
>>108185401
SteamVR can't use async reprojection half the time and motion smoothing is still unavailable because they haven't released any of their Frame patches yet. If you run VR through the (FOSS) Monado runtime (using a one-click solution like Envision to also bind to Steam games), it works great. Get the WayVR plugin for overlays. One glance at Monado's site says your headset should work.
>>
>>108187145
Any day now.
>>
>>108184623
VR is one of those things that will catch on when the tech is there. Right now it's still like wearing a snorkel mask. When they make the experience better than looking at a TV or computer monitor every normie will buy.
>>
>>108188508
>when we have unrealistic post scarcity magic holodecks and SAO full dive everyone will want it
well, yes sure
>>
>>108184738
>Bambu is nsa spyware
Why in the fuck would I even connect my printer to the internet?
>>
>>108188323
>Frame patches
I am anxiously awaiting for the Steam Frame, but I am a Linux user.
Is it expected that Valve will fix the remaining issues with VR on Linux for the release of the Frame?
>>
>>108184623
>"definitive" version
Isn't the Steam Frame going to be a pretty much "definitive" gaming VR headset?
>>
>>108189011
Nah. Just needs to be high res enough that you can comfortably read text, full fov and smallish form factor.
>>
>>108189049
I don't see why they wouldn't. The Frame is a standalone that runs on GNU/Linux natively.
>>
>>108189059
much like the index was until faceshit started ruining the market
>>108189556
the index has been out for a gajillion years and still doesn't support camera passthrough on linux and still can't put v1 basestations into standby when turning off steamvr
just because it runs doesn't mean all of it works
>>
>>108188323
Awesome, thanks. Might be my weekend project.
>>
>>108190995
>the index has been out for a gajillion years
But SteamOS and the overall Valve Linux effort didn't start (or restart) until recently when the Steam Deck came out.

>>108189556
That's true.
