It's a stupid question anyway, and Claude gives you the benefit of the doubt and doesn't assume you forgot that you should take your car with you if you want it washed.
In its "head" you made a statement about needing to wash your car and then an unrelated question of wether you should walk or drive to a place that's 20 meters away.

I moved out in 2014 when I was 21, even moved to a different city. Had 3 months of expenses saved up and no job. I wasn't even a developer back then and only worked shitty jobs. I needed roomates of course because I couldn't afford rent by myself.

Moving out is something you either have the balls to fucking do it or be a coward and don't. Freedom has a price when you're poor. Pay the price or remain a bitch momma boy forever.

Nobody is actually really starving or living on the streets this is a meme bullshit thats been spreading around for years from irresponsible faggots.

Whoever paid for your education wont let you ended up begging on some alley. At best you will get put in a job outside of what you've been studying all those 4 years, at best you know somebody who can get you job through networking and being buddy buddy

Whatever subject anyone studies never actually matters. Likeability and general upbeat attitude is. There are lots of government schools here in my country with promises like 3 year diploma and you'll be a part of a ship crew but that doesn't mean you'll be handed $100k on the get go. Everybody toils, i dont know about you but i rather toil on the shit i like.

Twenties are bullshit. After 30 is whatever.

A local business owner commissioned me to construct a custom 'Open'/'Closed' sign for their business. Today I brought him samples of the backboard I'd be using, a palette of colors as well as just an ebony stain on a scap piece of the same backboard, and 3D printed models of the letters for the sign in the exact font that his business uses for their logo and on their website, with offset and raised edges for ease of coloring to give it a 'white bordered' appearance.

He was ecstatic with the WIP I brought. Anybody else do weird shit like this in their free time? This is my first time (doing something for someone else), but then again I've never advertised or told people I'd do things like this and he just asked me out of the blue.

I think the process has been fun and its a nice break from staring at lines of code.

I don't do a lot of work at my job so I shouldn't be complaining but I have a tendency to get so fucking pissed off when they give me out of scope work. Most of the time I can dodge this shit or give vague answers but really the fact they throw this my way feels fucking insulting and it pisses me off. Kind of a dumb question, but how did you guys decide what niche of "tech" you wanted to work on? >>108189396
You need to work first to find out what you like and are good at. Take a job, do it for a couple years. If you like it, great. If not, or if you suck at it... well, now you know what to avoid when you start looking for another job.
>>
>>108189396

slopping? kek if only VSC even worked properly. they're fucking it up with the latest updates and the usual autocomplete we had since forever is not even working properly

as to slopping (though right now that's besides the point, even the basics are not working properly), my favorite method is the company's AI, it has chatGPT 4o which is an old model, but it has the upside that i can ask it things specific to this company, and give it company code without leaks, so that's the one i used, however they just removed my access for some retarded reason

This is the problem though. If a layman came to you with something that 'sounds just about right', or had some weird phrasing, you'd be able to say "oh, you mean this right? yea, we can do that".

>i constantly tell them "mom dad there are bullshit jobs out there like internship that only pays $100 a month and that has to be onsite. I know our country minimum wage is $300 but thats the truth. Transportation for 22 days cost $100, and meals for 22 days cost $100. Why cant i just do an art business at home that nets me $100 a month? Or maybe a remote internship? At least it's a start and i dont have to get tired doing commute and no time for hobbies / thinking about other source of income. I cant move out too. To move out at least i need to gain 3 years of experience first and a job that would pay me $500"
>they never fucking listened or understand. Or they would say "yeah ok understandable" but then make a huge fuss about it trying to stir a debate every single week.
>their favorite phrase is "you need to get out of the house." Or "stop saying we dont respect you while you still need food, place to sleep, and internet" or they would give me some "errands" outside of my main job like having to make a 200 pages document or a website for their blogs or something. Each time i worked on it for like a month it never gets anywhere, it doesn't continue so i cant put it on my CV, i never get a compensation, and if i bring that up "shut up, go make money elsewhere, this is your fault for being useless." Or "tee hee sorry son the one who gave me this task actually doesn't give me any budget"

I genuinely dont feel safe around them. What the fuck should i do? By god im trying to get money but i keep getting harassed on weekends and evenings when i try to rest and shit. Why are they so cruel? Why are boomers and gen x like this?

real developers write code and then do all the "niche" shit themselves when the nichefags plot on how to get the developers laidoff for making the nichefags look fake and gay.

DevOps isn't dead at all. It's still one of the most gatekept parts of the industry with you getting lucky to be onboarded into it via internal moving, its just that companies don't think they need that many people for the roles (they do, which is why software has gotten genuinely worse across the board since like 2022).
Even in europe, where there's a bunch of tenured people who should have some pretty good job security, I've seen banks and other roles open for DevOps. It's actually more common than software developer roles, and if you somehow have the experience and you're under 30, I think they'd hire you on the spot. Of course, that requires some good networking to even get those skills/certs in the first place.
>>
>>108190522

It really strikes me as some weird individualistic outlook that computer programmers are just simply guys who sit at computers and do nothing but write code. Motherfucker, I wish that was my job, but it ain't. Like maybe 40% of my job is that, and unless you manage to build a robot that can do the other 60% that isn't programming and interacting with a bunch of bullshit I have to update and understand and infer what needs to go through unit testing and adapt user stories (not create them, which my company's suits don't understand), then nothing is going to change at all.
>>
>>108190786
>still code but not write syntax directly

this unironically makes sense, but, i wonder how he thinks that would work, because software development is very particular, there's a syntax for a reason

i think he means it and is not trying to sell something like sam altman, because he is not saying anything to appeal to masses who only see what's spelled out to them, such as "this is the end of society as we know it, it's advancing so fast!!", so i think he is probably sincere, but i dont get it

maybe a kind of collaborative thing where AI does most of the coding and there's a dev giving instructions along the way, like a kind of architect. considering we never even type the full names of variables, this probably wouldn't save that much time even if it sounds like it would change everything

Even so, you'd get better results out of a junior. I don't get it. AI's usefulness stops when I try and do anything but boiler plate with it. The "edge cases" that a lot of people claim are sometimes the crux of the majority of the work, there's that context its missing.

Not many, but I think there are some people who are coming in and need to admit to themselves that working for cashier-tier money might not be a terrible thing for the experience. I know that depends on your money/family situation, but 2-3 years in a job like that and yea it'll suck but at least you'll have upwards trajectory.

No, a junior isn't that fast.

A junior has different strengths and weaknesses from AI, he will need a LOT less hand holding than AI (or rather, what I am imagining AI will become in the following years, because right now there's hype but it never gets things right) but also take longer.

What I am imagining is like you're coding on the IDE and the AI can't really grasp how everything in the code comes together to make the app work or why you're doing things the way you are, but you give it hints like "make a function to do this and that" and it does it as you go, so its like typing faster, but idk how well that would work

Yea, and the AI can spit out boiler plate faster than I can, hell it can probably do some subroutines faster than I can if they're common enough.
The problem with what you're suggesting is that the LLMs and no current AI neural network has the actual capacity to store knowledge of the entire codebase and to acutally infer it like a human being. Which is what a junior is, and what a senior is, what even the dumbest no-coder is, surprisingly. Looking at other people's code is dumb and stupid enough as it is, but the only reason we can really understand it is contextual knowledge and assumptions and back and forth mutual understanding.
Unless a company is going to build a internal LLM that doesn't suck major ass (which no one has done and no one will do until we figure out something as crucial as convnets, transformers or make another massive GPU leap then current structure of AI models simply doesn't allow for the replacement of an actual thinking human being.

I don't value co-workers solely because they are good at coding. I value those who are able to concisely tell me what they want, how they want it, what they're doing to achieve that and what they want me to do/help with. LLMs are a wrench, not part of the team.
Also if you just want to type faster, there's numerous things you can do for that.

LLM failures go viral because they trigger a "Schadenfreude" response to automation anxiety. If the oracle can't do basic logic, our jobs feel safe for another quarter.
Wrong.

The only thing I enjoyed that much at that age was reading books, playing video games, and learning about dinosaurs and astronomy. I'm too stupid to find a career in paleontology or physics and I can't write worth a damn, so being a technology janitor 50 hours a week and gooning it is.

Don't you guys think it's ironic that us, the "tech savvy" kids in the family, are becoming the new ludites? Whoever writes this universe has a nice sense of humor.

The software engineer hierarchy at my company goes
>Associate Software Engineer
>Software Engineer
>Senior Software Engineer
>Staff Software Engineer
>Principal Software Engineer
I'd say that 80% of the SWEs in the organization are seniors, 15% are Associate or mid-level, 4% are Staff, and 1% are Principal.
In a 'diamond' shaped environment like this, how do you get to Staff?

I still remember 10 years ago when AI was just a distant a possibility, programmers saying "There's no way a computer could take MY job, I'm the one programming them!"

Python is much more learnable, but can be frustrating if you're used to C or something.
Javascript honestly isn't that bad. It's the libraries and little nicks and the unholy abominations of frameworks that are fucking horrid.
Java's boring, stereotyped, but realistically you probably know a language just close enough to it and you've probably already done something in it.

How bad is it if I'm a junior and I've been unemployed for over a year?

I graduated in 2024 and got laid off at my first job in early 2025 and I fell into a really bad depression and went back into being a neet.

Since the new year I've been feeling good again, was coding some stuff for fun and feel ready to apply again soon, but the idea of going back on the market feels kinda terrifying.

Got an interview as a data annotator job, basically it's giving a transcription to a voice note / video. Like a glorified fansubber. What does this job actually like on the daily? Feels like an affiliate marketing garbo.

I don't live in the third world so I'd still have income after losing a job. Also even if I didn't, I could rough it out for about 15 years at this point. And when money runs out, I'd still have a roof over my head.
