my picrel macbook from 2017 died last week.
at first i went on reddit for troubleshooting, did an SMC reset, and it worked for a couple of days, then completely dead.
apple wouldnt repair it as its old,
I took it to random repair shop where they told that there was a power surge which caused a short in the logic board's power circuit.
they said its gonna cost me:
> 300 euros to repair it
> 200 for data recovery
are these prices fair? also is it worth it? should i do nothing and get a new one instead?
keep in mind im a poor uni student and dont have money to waste
>>
My stinkpads is still werking fine.
>>
I would probably try to find an older m series macbook instead of trying to fix one of the intel models if I was pressed for cash.
>>
>>108199048
u should definitely just get a new one since it doesn't have M chip
>>
>>108199266
>>108199346
are intel macs that different than m macs? was checking the prices, and they are way more expensive?
>>
>>108199048
you can probably find a used m1 macbook for around that much money. restore from your backups to recover your data.
>>
>>108199701
my last backup on an external ssd i have is from back in november unfortunately
its not the end of the world but kinda sucks
>>
>>108199727
I'm sorry, but I think putting the money towards a new laptop is going to have more benefit than paying for data recovery. You should set up time machine or vorta on your new computer with an old cheap computer running samba or just ssh.
>>
>>108199405
yes unironically
apple silicon macbooks are enormously more efficient and powerful than 2017 intel nigger lake processors
night and day
>>
>>108199048
The possibility is that 12v got sent to the flash nand in which case say bye to your data or any possibility of recovery
>>
>>108199809
then why the hell did the repair shop tell me that they could do it?
>>
>>108199048
>> 200 for data recovery
wut - just take the drive out and mount it on any other comput..
>macbook
oh. You fucked up good here.
>>
>>108199971
2017 intel macbooks had removable ssds doofus
>>
>>108199913
they can't know until they actually do the work, if it fails they just charge you for the time spent trying to recover the data. that'll be close to 200.
>>
>>108199988
2017 must have been among the last to have removable drives. Regardless OP is demonstrating why you don't buy trash with soldered drives.
>>
>>108199988
>>108199990
wait so does this mean i can just physically remove the data myself if its removable?
>>
>>108200071
Yes, but FYI, if you just get a used M1 mac and take it to the apple store alongside the old one, they will recover the data from the broken one for free usually
>>
>>108199405

Intel Macs are significantly worse than M series chips. M1 (2021) is still good to this day. ARM architecture is the future of macOS as well.
>>
>>108200079
>Yes, but FYI, if you just get a used M1 mac and take it to the apple store alongside the old one, they will recover the data from the broken one for free usually
no fucking way, i had genuinely decided to bite the bullet and pay the 200 euros for the data recovery
if apple cant do it as they told me its "vintage", is it easy to do this on my own?
>>
>>108199405
>and they are way more expensive?
M4 MacBook Air was like $750 for a few months during the holiday season.
>>
>>108200148
ngl i actually tried the m4 macbook air and it looked dope, the keyboard felt way nicer to my mbp 2017, was WAY WAY faster and smooth
but 1k is almost is my rent for 4 months, will def have to go for something used again
>>
>>108200120
Should be, just remove the m.2 drive and either slot it into a desktop or one of those external m.2 enclosures.
Just make sure the m.2 enclosure supports PCIe SSDs.
You'll probably need either Linux or another Mac to read the APFS or HFS+ partition(s).
>>
>>108200181
but spending 1 month worth of rent to fix an old slow computer is a wise decision?
>>
>>108200182
eh, you need to research the specific model. i think even the old ssd's they used were proprietary.
>>
>>108200182
I don't think those are standard M2 drives, would be helpful if OP posted the fucking model number. If its an A1708, the 13" still have a 'removable' drive but this is afaik some proprietary Apple pish. But that at least still offers you the chance of getting another lo-spec A1708 body (maybe $100), mount old drive in that, then back your shit up:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw9g_dBxSUk
while also then having a working mac again.
as you note tho, if its a normal m2 drive, you grand, just get an external enclosure, mount it in that, copy it whatever data wherever. But it must be a removable drive of some sort, otherwise $200 quote for data recovery seems a bit lo-ball, just I doubt its a standard one, because Apple. tldr, don't buy fucking Appletrash.
>>
>>108200265
>wah abloobloobloo
literal 4 year olds in zhangzhou can solder nands with a stencil and some paste but somehow its too hard for you huh faggot
>>
>>108200278
does OP fucking *sound like* he has access to a solder station and elctrogoblin-like skills then? You fucking tard.
>>
>>108200265
>>108200260
its the A1708 13" no touchbar
dude so i have to buy again the same for computer dor the data transfer to work?
>>
>>108200260
>>108200265
>>108200307
Ah yeah forgot about that. I think there are external enclosures made by OWC that take the weird proprietary SSD format.
>>
>>108200307
yeah, see linked vid in previous post.
tldr, its a proprietary POS Apple excuse of an SSD, but it is at least nominally - unlike the larger macbooks of same vintage - still removable. And if it that works, you have a Macbook again + spare drive. You can then sell that shit and buy something useful while its still worth even $100, because the soldered ssd models are worth jackshit.
>>
>>108199048
nigga, they are $300 for a refurb
>>
>>108200360
>nigga
the point of this thread is intel macs are dogshit and aren't worth repairing
>>
>>108200346
thank you so much dude, i will be honest i am a little bit anxious about this since ive not done anything similar before + i hope i dont fuck up when buying the other computer
i hope this works

>i hope this works
well, theres really no other way of doing it, put it that way. As >>108200336, OWC made enclosures for some of Apples other propietray garbage, but apparently not this. Worst case, the SSD itself is damaged, but theres no real way of finding that out easily otherwise. Just go slowly and follow the vid as best as. You also need Apple-specific screwdrivers - yes, really - maybe another few bucks. tldr, you lucky you caught the last removable SSD of any kind, don't buy Appletrash.
>>
>>108200534
If it worked with an external monitor and you have one, its fine, or you think you can just swap mainboards around. In practice tho, you are getting ambitious here, and dont know *why* the video is fucked - if that is a mainboard problem, you back to square one. Just look for an otherwise working one, maybe some wear and tear, otherwise your potential problems are mounting.
>>
>>108200301
any corner store pakistani phone repair shop has a soldering station and a nand reprogrammer if youre too much of a queer to do it yourself
>>
>>108200534
check the prices of sold macbooks of this exact model. once you have an idea of the actual price you can sell it for, find one to buy. put your ssd in, get your data off, and then put the mac back on ebay. then buy an m series macbook.
>>
>>108200669
yes.
meanwhile OP is trying to recover data from a removable SSD. Do keep up.
>>
>>108200559
I see, i guess i was both lucky and unlucky
> Apple-specific screwdrivers
classic apple, i am kinda happy our eu guys have declared war on these practices
>>108200599
thats interesting, i guess its a gamble, maybe i could ask the seller directly why the screen died or just do this >>108200675 even if it is a bit more hard and dont really have any experience with selling stuff on ebay
thank you so much guys

still way better than the other shit i see people using at the uni
>>

I had one of these pieces of shit before
