The word luddite gets bandied around, but this is what it originally meant.
>>
It won't be that bad. The biggest economic collapse in modern history was also the golden age of movies. And animation too.
>>
>>108216478
Some people don't understand that it can't be stopped. AGI is not needed to replace most of the workforce. The big change is that before, programming needed to follow strict rules. Now, there can be at least some fuzziness, which makes it enough to take into account things that might not have been coded with hard rules. Current tech + good scaffolding and enough safeguards can probably do most white collar jobs at an ok level. Human supervision might remain needed, but that's still 80% of the workforce that's suddenly not needed anymore. The main reason it hasn't happened is that people are still chasing new things and making progress, but properly exploited what's already here is probably already enough.

why are mutts like this
>>
>>108216436
I live in a town of 50k. My electric bill just doubled due to a data center that uses the same amount of electricity as the rest of the town. Tax abatement for 15 years, and a skipped environmental assessment. Residents protested and it didn't stop. It pulls water from one of the largest lakes in the state (which residents drink out of) and no impact assessment was done for water table pollution. It employs ~40 people full time.

As always, it's a terrible, terrible thing for the local population.

Wow, what a shining example of your town’s brilliance. Doubling electric bills and draining a lake just to keep a tiny workforce afloat. And somehow, protesting doesn’t matter because big money always wins. It’s adorable how you think this is about the residents when it’s clearly about lining pockets. Environmental concerns? Who needs those when there's profit to be made. Truly inspiring how neglect and greed go hand in hand. Thanks for the enlightening update on your town’s tragic comedy.

The batteries will sting the most. But your energy costs will continually rise. Even gettin' lead acid for cheaps and cyclin' 'em out in 4-5years you'll prolly save. Gettin' better part o decade outta LiFePo4 will serve you better, tho, at larger cost. You wanna overspec batt even more than solar, worst case is you can discharge into the grid erry now an then and they pay you to cycle the batteries...
If donut labs aint fulla shit with their battery, solid state will be on the cards, and they'll last decades...

Do people realize a data center is just a warehouse with computer servers inside? It's not a new technology, they've been around for decades. The entire internet runs on data centers.

>we're also far away from the stochastic parrot stage, it's not sentient, but people with just a little bit of knowledge are underestimating what they can do

let's start by stating the obvious: it's not profitable. even with GPUs and all, computing inputs to output words costs more than what they charge their users (at least on average)
second...
>the final product it's not really brute force

>Do people realize a data center is just a warehouse with computer servers inside? It's not a new technology, they've been around for decades. The entire internet runs on data centers.
how odd. I'm pretty sure I've read this shit before here.
it's not about the data (what's the data you people talk about so much? most of the "data" is actually generated in these DCs anyway... while the only valuable data is correlating input values with users to spy on them), it's about the power consumption (mostly by GPUs) and disruption of small communities, RETARD.

fuck, I deleted the rest by mistake

>the final product it's not really brute force
yes, it fucking is lmao. it's akin to autocomplete.

>people with just a little bit of knowledge are underestimating what they can do
elaborate.
to me, LLMs are basically a big DB of knowledge extracted from random website that is "encoded" in a way that you can extract said knowledge... as long as similar input text can be found encoded in the very same DB.

Cars needed humans to build them and drive them for decades, and Ford made them affordable.

What you are asking for is to decouple work from humans. Historically even when tech disrupted certain sectors, there were raplacement jobs. Carriage drivers became truckers and taxi drivers etc.

A GPU hosting an LLM isn't consuming any more electricity than a GPU hosting a Call of Duty game. So please, explain to me, why is mindless power consumption to host porn, video games, and Hollywood slop fine and acceptable, but power consumption to host an LLM is an unthinkable evil?

Why should we be fine with data centers for porn and video games but not LLMs.

Don't try to tell me that a computer server hosting an LLM is somehow magical and consumes power in a way other computer servers don't

Cars gave everyone the ability to travel great distances and car factories created tons of high paying jobs which led to the US experiencing a period of economic prosperity the likes of which mankind had never seen.

AI isn't destroying jobs. It's making the economy so productive that humans are no longer needed. The factories will still be running. The tractors will still be plowing. The supermarket shelves will be full. There will be abundance like we've never seen before.

It won't be like the depression where productivity suddenly stopped and the fields went fallow. The economy will still be moving at full speed. It just won't need humans anymore.

If we decide we're going enable an infinite wealth glitch and still make people live in poverty, and nobody ever does anything, then humanity is far more retarded than I've ever imagined and deserves to be replaced by ASI

actually, yes. go look up cybernetics. there is a lot more to a live system than simple autocomplete. a lot of experiences, a lot of reflection. a good part of our system is encoded in our DNA (which changes over time), yet we are also able to learn from our environment

>you can argue that everything is caused by something
what the fuck is this bs lmao

>LLMs are not DBs, more regurgitated nonsense
anon... you can literally download their data and the code to translate inputs into outputs. let me know how that makes them not a kind of DB.

>what are you even talking about
JFC. this board, man. how do people who have 0 clue about the topic of artificial intelligence even talk about stuff that is supposed to be artificial intelligence? LMAO
>>
>>108217353
Is it going to replace all jobs or is it useless? Is it going to kill off all plebs or or it just a db?
>how do people who have 0 clue about the topic of artificial intelligence even talk about stuff that is supposed to be artificial intelligence
Literally you. Another dunning-Kruger retard.

because there can't be a middle point

>Literally you. Another dunning-Kruger retard.

>then please go read some of the history of cybernetics
explain in your own words. don't tell me to 'do my own research'. just try it please.
>because there can't be a middle point
there literally can't in this case. it can't be useless and simultaneously be replacing all jobs, also CEO are mocking it lol.
>>
>>108217390
I know I'm arguing with a bunch of absolute retards who are unable to follow a basic conversation based on logic, knowledge and experience

I don't know why I keep coming here. you faggots assume and make up a lot of shit out of nowhere, and then argue against that because... reasons.

I'm out. not bumping this thread anymore. I'm glad to see american tech companies destroy themselves anyway kek

>The big change is that before, programming needed to follow strict rules. Now, there can be at least some fuzziness, which makes it enough to take into account things that might not have been coded with hard rules.
That is not how it works, at all.

You seem to be where I was a few years ago, just with more confidence. It is what it is.

Crash it! And then abolish fiduciary duty to shareholders forever.
>>
>>108216436
Good, let it all burn. I want to see executives and traders jumping out of skyscrapers to their deaths as it all implodes!

>>108216576
>they're definitely not just gonna let most of the population die and keep the rest around as glorified slaves
Yeah I'm sure the people who're needed to run all the actual infrastructure, the killer drones, etc., are just going to tolerate that. As soon as the mass of normies has died off and the elites no longer have a meat shield protecting them, the technician class is going to take over the killbots and wipe out the elites.

it's a major pain in the ass, makes it very hard to sleep for me

This is what most people don't talk about they talk about electricity and water but noise pollution and vibrations are gonna fuck you up if you live within 3 miles of the fucking thing.
They basically create an unlivable wasteland in like a five miles radius unless you fucking love droning noises and your walls literally vibrating.

NIMBYS are unironically correct here go build them at the bottom of the ocean or something
