Somehow, I've lost a file in my downloads directory. I saw the file where it was, I moved it to a different folder, and then I attempted to extract it (it was a zip) to another folder. There's a whole mess of directories I have to deal with but I'm pretty certain it should have worked because no new folder is detectable as far as I can tell. I can't fine any related file now anywhere, but to make it even worse and more perplexing, when I search for things in the downloads directory windows 11 just wants to completely ignore all of my files and folders that have filenames including what I'm searching for, even ones I can find, seemingly with the exception of when I search while in the folder the thing I'm looking for is it. Am I missunderstanding something here? Does the downloads directory have some arbitrary difference from say, the images directory? Or is windows 11 just being a load of garbage as I strongly suspect it is?

My old Seagate 8tb HDD with 14k hours that is connected to my PC through some Fantec HDD enclosure via USB (because it's so slow when it starts up and the thingys inside it start spinning, slowing down the whole system loading for like 30s, so I just keep it as external) randomly just got stuck in some weird state where it just started humming non-stop, like some steady electrical low frequency hum that could be heard from everywhere in the room (not super loud, but audible). Put the hand on it and it was vibrating. Not too hot. Didn't stop working while doing that either, although I didn't try it much and quickly turned it off and on again, and it seems to be working fine now.SMART is all OK, temps normal, short tests also shown no errors, and I'll try doing the long test in HDD Sentinel overnight, cause it shows that it would take 10+ hours apparently. How do I disable Gaming Services? I don't need them, but they are hard-set to "automatic".
>>108230453that's natural because a lot of different Windows processes start connections, since Simplewall is a whitelisting firewall, it blocks everything by default and asks you if you want to let it through.A less annoying approach would be to just rely on the privacy settings and group policy to reduce the connections as much as you can, maybe try a debloater like winutil.I don't recommend blocking every single connection Windows makes because it could shit itself in some way or another, if you still want to go that schizo route anyways then just be aware of that. Also, fort firewall is slightly less annoying with alerts, and iirc portmaster has quick options to block microsoft connections

>>108218843I'm setting up my new PC soon, it should arrive by friday. I'm debating just installing Windows 11 Home or Pro with a Microsoft Account without any meme tweaks as from what I've read it seems pretty important to run Microsoft Account + BitLocker nowadays if you want to keep your data private/secure, as anyone who's running a local account can just have their OS files snooped in on by anybody with pysical access and a usb stick with software or linux isos. From what I've seen also it seems like MS Acc only requires internet connection/verification on the first time you set it up and afterwards it'll forever just boot with a password with or without internet. Is there realistically any reason not to use a Microsoft Account? I'll most likely need it anyway to use Xbox so I can keep my controller's firmware up to date. Realistically Windows is a proprietary black box, and even if I used a local account I'd never be able to make it fully private and independant anyways unless I go offline only. Am I missing something?
>>108235218During Windows setup choose English (World) instead of English (America) or English (UK). Worldwide gives you no bloatware. As for MS accounts you can tell Rufus to make you a local account and skip online setup. Then you can install whatever you need (browser, drivers, etc) and then activate with mass grave. You now have unbloated Windows without a online account.

>>108235517No I mean the windows operating system but made for vr
>>108235502Windows /vr/ in 2026 is running old ass games through DXVK. It's pretty much mandatory for the OG oblivion and FFXI.

>>108235530The Windows DWM would have a heart attack trying to manage vr. It already dies trying to do MPO on Nvidia.
>>108235501>there are concerns about how much data it lets microsoft connect to youYeah, but the main argument against windows is always that no matter what it has backdoors and is a properietary black box so any debloating or attempts at shutting down telemetry could just be a meme toggle that does nothing in reality. So if I need windows for vidya and college, might as well get all I can out of it and just not worry about privacy if realistically the only way I can get 100% true privacy and no tracking is only by deleting windows.>the only issue would be if you don't have a recovery method set and the account got hijacked or somethingI feel like 2FA and a mobile phone, as well as a local rl recovery key should be fine enough for this. I can't see of a scenario where I'd lose my data if I got it setup this way beyond somehow both losing my physical recovery key AND losing my phone AND losing my esim card account details.
>>108235566there are firewall blocklists that block microsoft domains for the people who are concerned about this, you can also just audit whatever connections your pc is making while idle to see if it's missing anything.it's not a concern for me personally, i actually use a microsoft account for my devices and leave most of the telemetry on because frankly i don't care, but this is what people who don't like those things do.as far as recovery methods, yes that should be adequate.
Then it's settled! Windows VR! :DDDD

>>108236248Windows 10 doesn't have all the AI features, which is honestly an improvement. But windows 11 does feel better. I don't really know why just small things. Edge browser is just fine compared with chrome, but it will reroute your searches to AI sometimes and it's annoying. I experimented with the whole data harvesting algorithm thing. Your data isn't ever going to produce tailored search results or whatever that are actually better than an unbiased or optmoized algoritm. I wish they'd just include more regular easy to use software. AI seems to mess everything up, like I was doing video editing and had to align clips and I was like "I wish AI would do this!" but in reality I wish I had a tool that did it, and a search bar to find the tool. Windows now-a-days doesn't have any interesting "killer apps" like a text to speech toy or even a couple killer games pre-installed. Or in this case, doesn't have movie maker. I'd say just use Windows XP but it's no longer supported. On a side-note, it's baffling to even get any good anti-virus on your machine. I think as a society we've given up on malware blockers, much less paying for them. Software like Word and Powerpoint is now a subscription, when google offers them for free in the cloud. Just shoot me already. Cloud or subscription.I don't know man, it's a perilous time but somehow I think it'll turn out alright. I wish I could just pay like 200-300 dollars for a fully featured OS and call it a day.
>>108236479On the plus side of windows 11, there is phone link with the iPhone now. So you can get your calls and texts there, haven't set it up all the way it's kind of hard but that's cool. I really like that feature. I like the cloud backup integration. I like the start menu, it's actually very customizable if you ever use it. And Aesthetically pleasing, although a bit different than the windows XP classic start menu. A lot of it is just getting used to using it, I switched a lot between mac and PC and I never really got used to anything. Overall I'd say get windows 11 but when you turn on edge for the first time don't opt into the AI enhanced whatever.
>>108236248I don't know about the IOT or home pro thing, I'm not big on IOT just yet. I would probably get that though. Home/Pro isn't a big difference I don't know anything about bitlocker
Call me crazy, but I sort of want to give up my cellphone and just use a computer. I've wanted to give up my cellphone for a long time. I sort of wanted to use Microsoft teams viop as my main phone number. I wish I could have an actual camera, an actual mp3 player, and not have the internet in my pocket 24/7. Just have the internet be at my desk. I like smoking because I step outside and it's just trees and there's no computer there and I'm just focused on my breathing. But yeah. Cellphone ruins that. Plus being online in public is like bringing the internet into the real world, and I think they should be disconnected. I've gone without internet before and failed and realized it's a healthy thing for my life, but at the rate things are going I'm going to feel like my whole life is just text on a screen and videogames. I don't want that.
>>108236676To go even further, I wouldn't want a telephone AT my computer, but a landline in the living room. Call me old fashioned.
>>108236676oh and a handheld console that fits in my pocket. But yeah. Sort of off topic I'll stop now.
linuxchad here, why aren't you all making an effort to dump winshit at this point? it's been a shitshow for years, but they're really just insulting you now with 11.i switched to arch linux about a year ago (gradually, meaning i moved one machine to linux while i was still on winshit 10)just gradually do it and you'll be fineubuntu or debian or fedora will work for most things but i'm on archwine is good enough to emulate basically anything you depend onyou're just leaving performance and disk space on the table at this point
>>108236764I trust publicly traded companies who charge for software more than I trust myself/strangers to build my software. I like being an end user and having fun.
>>108236638yeah, I was looking into IoT because I can get it to run more smoothly on my pc(a potato pc) due to probably low storage and low ram usage since it does not many of the bloat apps/features pre-installed i assume.>>108236410I asked them lol they didn't answer about which plugin they will use for monitoring but i guess it's some ai or something. Only good thing is that there will be teachers who will monitor the webcam too so don't have to worry about ai false flagging just because of weird noises or it's hallucinations. yeah, and looked some famous ones, most still support w10 as of right now which is a good news.>>108236479ai still does its fair share of hallucinations any time I try to use it for some serious tasks. lol the anti-virus one got me, damn old days and getting some random malware or virus when I was just new to computer really got me scared. Also gotta hate how university still uses Office instead of online google ones. It's like they are sponsored by Microsoft or something(even thought they aren't, I checked out with my teachers).>>108236676>I've gone without internet before and failed and realized it's a healthy thing for my lifeYeah it's good to take breaks from internet and all if you can try, idk about others but I have noticed I feel more at peace internally if I am doing some task like drawing or writing or something which doesn't require access to any comp/internet/cellphone to do it. My house is near a farms area too so maybe that plays it's part. No hustle bustle or urban stuffs
>>108236784>publicly traded companiesyeah sure Delhisoft is really trustworthy, dude
>>108236799It's better than going to freedom hell
>>108236800you're too propagandized for your own good. highly likely you're an amerimutt.freedom is based and works.
>>108236795Yeah, all of those things are fun. Sometimes I wish I could have a computer, but leave the rest of the world at home. Or at the very least turn it off. You get so seeped in it you need to detox after awhile, it's not healthy. Neither is not having internet though.

>>108236862Sorry but this is the life I've chose.
>>108236764>linuxchad here, why aren't you all making an effort to dump winshit at this point?because fixing microsoft's decisions takes a few hours a year of my time which is far less than what relearning everything and reacquiring all that troubleshooting experience would cost. it's the same reason i don't switch to dvorak keyboard layout even though it's probably objectively better; i can't unlearn 30 years of qwerty, it's always going to be faster for me.
>>108236881kind of a gay false dichotomy you've made. why the fuck would you assume people using linux are relearning literally everything about a OS?KDE and GNOME are basically freedom-windows.
>>108236881if you wanted to, you'd do it for the fun of learning
>>108236764If you're not a privacyschizo windows just works for everything, we both know that linux doesn't. In fact linux doesn't exist, you have ubuntu, fedora, opensuse, whatever, all of those with like 0.1% of usage share of desktop computers and completely irrelevant and maintained by like 5 people each. I also follow linux development and space so you can't fool me with your fosstard evangelism either since I can easily tell that since 2020-2026 there's basically been no progress in linux. It's the same issues and same distros and same bugs. Nothing evolved, nothing changed. It'll forever be a meme option.
>>108236893what are you even talking about, you asked why i don't do it, that's why i don't do it. in windows, when something goes wrong it usually takes me a few minutes to fix because i have a ton of experience. in linux if something goes wrong i'd have to spend a lot more time researching it.>>108236932if i was going to learn something i'd learn a new language

>>108237627yea but i mean should i put LTSC or pro/home?
>>108237634since you have mas, the only two real options you have:windows 10 enterprise 22h2 with commercial esu (eol oct 2028)windows 10 iot enterprise 21h2 (eol jan 2032)the difference between them is basically how much bloat is packed by defaultand that some software will bitch about 21h2, so it boils down to this:if you are retarded - enterprise 22h2 and enable esuif you wanna tinker with shit - ltsc 21h2
>>108237690ok, just annoyed that i have to find drivers and put it onto my USB stick from my main computer.
This new battery icon sucks.... fucking amateurs.
>>108237492if you want something that you won't have to touch for a long time, the latest win11 iot enterprise ltsc (currently 24h2), use mas tsforge to activateif you want something that tracks with the latest updates, win11 education, use mas hwid to activate. feature upgrades are often very buggy for a few months after their release (sometimes longer, like now), you can use group policy to target whatever version you're on until you're ready to upgrade to the new one.if you want to avoid windows 11 and stay with 10, win10 iot enterprise ltsc 2021, use mas tsforge to activate and use tsforge for esus as wellhttps://massgrave.dev/windows10_eol
My dad is having a weird issue with his PC running Win 11. He can make a new folder, but when he tries to rename it, it says "The file/folder cannot be found". His account is the admin account. He's been able to rename folders through the command prompt, but explorer just shits its pants. Any ideas what I can look at to fix this?
>>108239091sounds completely fucked. try the usual sfc scannow, if not it'll need a reinstall
>>108239091sfc /scannow as admin like the other guy saidif that doesn't work, check if command prompt can see it with dir. if it can, you might be able to skirt by with an explorer replacement. but try sfc first for sure.
How do I get the usb ports to show up in the add a printer menu? Trying to add my old printer and I can manually install the driver but the usb port option does not show up in the menu so I cannot get it to work.
Why does my RX 5700 XT behave worse on W10 than on W11, this shit makes no sense. For some reason it'll randomly do shit like taskbar transparency being fucked up and completely transparent rather than normal transparency, or it'll give me a warning on boot that AMD drivers are installed and need a reboot lol while it works completely fine on W11. Shouldn't a older GPU work better on W10?
>>108239388Just connect the printer drivers get installed automatically

>>108236764>Why haven't you built your own car yet broI just want to drive. And not have to debug the radiator every day.
>>108239388the "usb ports" in that ui you're referring to are added automatically by the driver software when the printer is connected. generally, if the printer's powered on and connected, the print management interface should already have the relevant port created and set up.since you said it's NOT, either the driver software doesn't match the printer, windows isn't detecting the printer, or there's some sort of compatibility issue because the printer or driver software is so old that it doesn't run on WDDM.download and run usbtreeview as admin, then power the printer on and plug it in. if windows actually detects it at all, the software should highlight the relevant device in the list in green. from there you actually have a reference you can work with and try to manually update the driver software via properties or whatever else.if you see jack shit when you connect it in usbtreeview, then windows isn't detecting it at all and you're either looking at a bad port, a bad cable, or the printer is fucked or incompatible in some way.
New computer. I've been pretending win11 doesn't exist until this exact moment. I know nothing. Anything absolutely critical I should know or do? A Microsoft account's not that bad, right? They can twist my arm if they want. I'm tired of fighting the system. I just want to do my work and I need Win11. I have Linux on my other machines, so yeah.
>>108239831fear not, there are a lot of ways to use Windows with a local account, one of them is to create the bootable USB with rufus, which asks you if you want to bypass some requirements.Another method is to just setup your machine with any MS account, make a local account and then delete the previous one. It's recommended to use Enterprise because Windows tends to be less annoying on those. It's also recommended to go through all the privacy and search settings to minimize the annoyances, or you could use tools like winhance or winutil to debloat windows, but using them with confidence takes a bit more of knowledge
>>108239831microsoft account is fine imo, it's easy enough if you don't want to use one though, rufus lets you do it>Anything absolutely critical I should know or do?if there's something you don't like, there's usually a way to fix it>windows updatesgroup policy (not available on home)>aihttps://github.com/zoicware/RemoveWindowsAI/>telemetryhttps://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10>onedrivegroup policy, make sure nothing's in it before uninstalling>start menuthere are like a dozen different tools to replace it with different options and looks>not liking the gui-first paradigmpowershell exposes most functionality via terminal now, the syntax is aids though. built-in version is like powershell 5 and it will correctly point out there's a more recent version you can install, i don't know why they don't include the most up to date one.>want a more customizeable terminalwindows terminal can be set to use powershell, command prompt, or even shit like python as a backend>remote accessuse rdp for internal (home only has client, everything higher has all), parsec or moonlight-sunshine for external, remote assistance or teamviewer for support>remote shellputty for ssh clientthere's no real good solution for host other than a wsl guest, i think powershell remoting is a thing but i wouldn't touch it with a 50 yard stick>ftp/scpwinscp>activationMAS>extended updatesalso MAS>questions about eol or version changingMAS websiteidk pick a use case you have on linux that you want to do on windows, i can give you some info
>>108239689Thanks, that actually helped a lot. Looks like it is just the printer after all, used a verified functional cable and got no response but noticed that the port on the printer feels pretty loose. Will open it up and take a look before giving up on it and looking for another B&W laser printer but that saved me from pointlessly banging my head against this for even longer.
>>108240468no problem, glad it at least saved you some time. no ethernet port on it? if it has an ethernet port, you might be able to hook it up to your router and set it up as a network printer.i'm assuming if it's ancient it doesn't have wifi functionality but it might at least be worth checking the specs just in case.if this thing's properly ancient it might have a parallel port and you could maybe find a parallel to usb adapter or a parallel pcie card but that's way beyond my realm of expertise and into the realm of legacy jank; it could maybe work with generic pcl/postscript print drivers but i would just replace it at that point.
>>108239105>>108239164Thanks anons, I've passed it on to him, hopefully that helps him. Otherwise I think we're just going to have to do a fresh installation.

I fucking hate freaks in big tech forcing things onto people. Windows 11 Notepad is a disgusting dim gray instead of a pure RGB 255 255 255 white background like previous Notepad versions were, for years prior, all because some tranny at Microslop didn't want to dim his fucking monitor and had an "Aha!" moment and dimmed NOTEPAD instead (while not letting us simply choose colors for ourselves, because, freaks at Microslop have a fetish for oppression and draconian rule) and I hate it.Is there any way to undo this other than dowloading an alternative? I just want notepad's background to be pure white again. Also I have to very often refresh explorer just to show updates like files moved/downloaded/deleted... is there any way to make Windows explorer refresh itself properly? On multiple machines and versions this has been a persistent problem ever since adopting Win11 and it has never been a thorn in my side on older operating systems. They just worked. Windows 11 quite literally doesn't.
>>108241304Win32 Notepad is still within the system as a "system app" which you can re-enable. And you could always just install Notepad++ or Notepad4 as a replacement anyway (and no, Notepad++ isn't still compromised, just don't bother with its auto-updater.)
