I have a system about 18yo and kept alive through upgrades running Win10 Pro. Whether it 's upgrading or clean install with Win10 IoT LTSC after reboot and entering second stage it always goes BSoD with SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED.

LTSC is binary identical to standard Windows, sure it's going to miss half of the drivers because it doesn't automatically install them out of the box but you can find a driver compatible with your hardware and it'll work just fine. i've used it on my main device for quite a while. there are some major annoyances but once you've sorted those it's generally fine. the most annoying things i've experienced are:

Somehow, I've lost a file in my downloads directory. I saw the file where it was, I moved it to a different folder, and then I attempted to extract it (it was a zip) to another folder. There's a whole mess of directories I have to deal with but I'm pretty certain it should have worked because no new folder is detectable as far as I can tell. I can't fine any related file now anywhere, but to make it even worse and more perplexing, when I search for things in the downloads directory windows 11 just wants to completely ignore all of my files and folders that have filenames including what I'm searching for, even ones I can find, seemingly with the exception of when I search while in the folder the thing I'm looking for is it. Am I missunderstanding something here? Does the downloads directory have some arbitrary difference from say, the images directory? How do I configure Simplewall to block every outgoing connection to Microsoft while ignoring everything else?

My old Seagate 8tb HDD with 14k hours that is connected to my PC through some Fantec HDD enclosure via USB (because it's so slow when it starts up and the thingys inside it start spinning, slowing down the whole system loading for like 30s, so I just keep it as external) randomly just got stuck in some weird state where it just started humming non-stop, like some steady electrical low frequency hum that could be heard from everywhere in the room (not super loud, but audible). Put the hand on it and it was vibrating. Not too hot. Didn't stop working while doing that either, although I didn't try it much and quickly turned it off and on again, and it seems to be working fine now.
SMART is all OK, temps normal, short tests also shown no errors, and I'll try doing the long test in HDD Sentinel overnight, cause it shows that it would take 10+ hours apparently. I've only ever used it for torrenting. Is it a sing of something failing or just a random glitch? Never heard it doing that before.

that's natural because a lot of different Windows processes start connections, since Simplewall is a whitelisting firewall, it blocks everything by default and asks you if you want to let it through.

A less annoying approach would be to just rely on the privacy settings and group policy to reduce the connections as much as you can, maybe try a debloater like winutil.

I don't recommend blocking every single connection Windows makes because it could shit itself in some way or another, if you still want to go that schizo route anyways then just be aware of that.

Also, fort firewall is slightly less annoying with alerts, and iirc portmaster has quick options to block microsoft connections

Realistically Windows is a proprietary black box, and even if I used a local account I'd never be able to make it fully private and independant anyways unless I go offline only. Yeah, but the main argument against windows is always that no matter what it has backdoors and is a properietary black box so any debloating or attempts at shutting down telemetry could just be a meme toggle that does nothing in reality. Windows 10 doesn't have all the AI features, which is honestly an improvement. But windows 11 does feel better. I don't really know why just small things. Edge browser is just fine compared with chrome, but it will reroute your searches to AI sometimes and it's annoying. I experimented with the whole data harvesting algorithm thing. Your data isn't ever going to produce tailored search results or whatever that are actually better than an unbiased or optmoized algoritm. I wish they'd just include more regular easy to use software. On the plus side of windows 11, there is phone link with the iPhone now. So you can get your calls and texts there, haven't set it up all the way it's kind of hard but that's cool. I really like that feature. I like the cloud backup integration. I like the start menu, it's actually very customizable if you ever use it. And Aesthetically pleasing, although a bit different than the windows XP classic start menu. A lot of it is just getting used to using it, I switched a lot between mac and PC and I never really got used to anything. Overall I'd say get windows 11 but when you turn on edge for the first time don't opt into the AI enhanced whatever.

Call me crazy, but I sort of want to give up my cellphone and just use a computer. I've wanted to give up my cellphone for a long time. I sort of wanted to use Microsoft teams viop as my main phone number. I wish I could have an actual camera, an actual mp3 player, and not have the internet in my pocket 24/7. Just have the internet be at my desk. I like smoking because I step outside and it's just trees and there's no computer there and I'm just focused on my breathing. But yeah. Cellphone ruins that. Plus being online in public is like bringing the internet into the real world, and I think they should be disconnected. if you want something that tracks with the latest updates, win11 education, use mas hwid to activate. feature upgrades are often very buggy for a few months after their release (sometimes longer, like now), you can use group policy to target whatever version you're on until you're ready to upgrade to the new one.

My dad is having a weird issue with his PC running Win 11. He can make a new folder, but when he tries to rename it, it says "The file/folder cannot be found". His account is the admin account. He's been able to rename folders through the command prompt, but explorer just shits its pants. Any ideas what I can look at to fix this?

How do I get the usb ports to show up in the add a printer menu? Trying to add my old printer and I can manually install the driver but the usb port option does not show up in the menu so I cannot get it to work.

Why does my RX 5700 XT behave worse on W10 than on W11, this shit makes no sense. For some reason it'll randomly do shit like taskbar transparency being fucked up and completely transparent rather than normal transparency, or it'll give me a warning on boot that AMD drivers are installed and need a reboot lol while it works completely fine on W11. Shouldn't a older GPU work better on W10?

the "usb ports" in that ui you're referring to are added automatically by the driver software when the printer is connected. generally, if the printer's powered on and connected, the print management interface should already have the relevant port created and set up.

since you said it's NOT, either the driver software doesn't match the printer, windows isn't detecting the printer, or there's some sort of compatibility issue because the printer or driver software is so old that it doesn't run on WDDM.

download and run usbtreeview as admin, then power the printer on and plug it in. if windows actually detects it at all, the software should highlight the relevant device in the list in green. from there you actually have a reference you can work with and try to manually update the driver software via properties or whatever else.

if you see jack shit when you connect it in usbtreeview, then windows isn't detecting it at all and you're either looking at a bad port, a bad cable, or the printer is fucked or incompatible in some way.

New computer. I've been pretending win11 doesn't exist until this exact moment. I know nothing. Anything absolutely critical I should know or do? A Microsoft account's not that bad, right? They can twist my arm if they want. I'm tired of fighting the system. I just want to do my work and I need Win11. I have Linux on my other machines, so yeah.

fear not, there are a lot of ways to use Windows with a local account, one of them is to create the bootable USB with rufus, which asks you if you want to bypass some requirements.

Another method is to just setup your machine with any MS account, make a local account and then delete the previous one.

It's recommended to use Enterprise because Windows tends to be less annoying on those.

It's also recommended to go through all the privacy and search settings to minimize the annoyances, or you could use tools like winhance or winutil to debloat windows, but using them with confidence takes a bit more of knowledge

Thanks, that actually helped a lot. Looks like it is just the printer after all, used a verified functional cable and got no response but noticed that the port on the printer feels pretty loose. Will open it up and take a look before giving up on it and looking for another B&W laser printer but that saved me from pointlessly banging my head against this for even longer.

i'm assuming if it's ancient it doesn't have wifi functionality but it might at least be worth checking the specs just in case.

if this thing's properly ancient it might have a parallel port and you could maybe find a parallel to usb adapter or a parallel pcie card but that's way beyond my realm of expertise and into the realm of legacy jank; it could maybe work with generic pcl/postscript print drivers but i would just replace it at that point.

I fucking hate freaks in big tech forcing things onto people. Windows 11 Notepad is a disgusting dim gray instead of a pure RGB 255 255 255 white background like previous Notepad versions were, for years prior, all because some tranny at Microslop didn't want to dim his fucking monitor and had an "Aha!" moment and dimmed NOTEPAD instead (while not letting us simply choose colors for ourselves, because, freaks at Microslop have a fetish for oppression and draconian rule) and I hate it.

Is there any way to undo this other than dowloading an alternative? I just want notepad's background to be pure white again.
Also I have to very often refresh explorer just to show updates like files moved/downloaded/deleted... is there any way to make Windows explorer refresh itself properly? On multiple machines and versions this has been a persistent problem ever since adopting Win11 and it has never been a thorn in my side on older operating systems. They just worked. Windows 11 quite literally doesn't.
