This is a reminder why meme distros are bad, you never know if the meme distro you're currently using will end up on this list. This list is no particular order:>Mandriva>CentOS>CrunchBang>Yellow Dog>Xandros Linux>Mythbuntu>VectorLinux>MEPIS>Antergos>Sabayon Linux>Clear Linux
>>108271347having freebsd and openbsd in that image feels weird
crunchbang was so cooldidn't even know what a DE, WM or compositor were at that time but I sure enjoyed how blazing fast Openbox was on my shitbox
>>108271347before the arch meme we had cruxdoes anyone remember that? i haven't seen it talked about in years
>>108271347Where do distros go when they die?
>>108271347nixos
>>108271347It's easier to just list the distros that exist in any meaningful way>debian/ubuntu/mint>fedora + ublue>archI think that's pretty much it. >inb4 other suggestions It's either based on one of those or it's a meme like opensuse or gentoo that nobody uses
>knoppixlast release was 2022>damn small linuxlast release 2024i guess it's tinycore for old systems now
>>108271347Here in Huezil there was a government programs that gave tax incentives to cheap computers with free software. But it seems a requirement was that the software had to have local support. As most reputable distros had no presence here, a bunch of fly-by-night ones appeared. Most notoriously Satux, as it was used (and likely sponsored) by CCE, a major electronics company.

>>108271347all distros serve a purpose - even the dead ones. when a distro dies you know that whatever it was 'selling' was not what potential users wanted to 'buy'. would you rather they collect telemetry or practice trial and error when it comes to making distros? personally, i'd pick the latter.
>>108271548(s)hell
>>108271347>MandrivaOpenMandriva exists
>>108271548/dev/null
EndeavourOS is the spiritual successor to AntergosBut I remember Antergos being this piece of shit that would never work if you even touched any of the tweaks in the installing process. Godawful.
>>108272314void?
>>108272314would things like Devuan, Antix and Puppy Linux come under Debian derivatives ?
Clover :(
>>108272834Meme shit nobody uses>>108272852Yeah + meme shit nobody uses
Slackware
>>108271347>>108272577>>108272314Arch, Debian and Fedora are the only distros. Everything else is a useless shitfork.
Plankfemtonanopicosecondly reminder that Gentoo is not on this list and won't be in foreseeable future, just as a side note.
FreeBSD won.
FreeBSD is incompatible with most poettering and opendesktop AIDS and ports can get rid of the rest. Idk how good Alpine is with this
>>108271347>CrunchBangIt ran so well... beautiful OS
>>108271347Add Pop to that list, once they implement the age verification they will lose most of their users. No fault of their own, as they have publicly stated they hate the law, but they are in colorado so they have no choice.
>>108273041Deuvan isn't a meme distro.
>>108277209alpine is trash in general, im adding that to the list
>>108277579why do you think it's trash?
>>108271347My first ever distro was was Mandrake in 2001 or thereabouts, but I didn't use linux primarily back then. The first time I really used linux heavily was with Crunchbang around 2008 or 2009?I only had a desktop and was going to be traveling for a few months. I got one of those new "netbook" things, and went a distro that I thought would be a good mix of light weight and still easy to set up and use. Worked so well that I used it as my main distro for another 4 years.
>>108271347I miss centos
>>108272314>gentoo that nobody usesFair. But what would Slackware be, since it's older than Debian and still being supported like Debian?
>>108272398>last release was 2022*Only in GermanEnglish Knoppix has been dead for like 15 years now, sadly. I loved it for a recovery OS, but Klaus not working on it killed it.
>>108277597its like running on someone elses arch setupjust arch for lazy/stupid people
It's a clic bait thread, nobody knows the site who lists the OS ?
>>108277620Me too, I bought a linux magazine with the Mandrake's cd in it.
>>108274646>ArchTranny distro>DebianServer distro that nobody uses unless it's Ubuntu based, and then it becomes a corpo distro>FedoraCorpo distroDownstreams are there so people can remove or improve the slop from their bases, as well as make them easier for anyone who isn't a NEET like 90% of this board to use.
>>108277411Of course it is
>>108279134I use Debian for my desktop
>>108272536>>108272544bunsen tries too hard to look cool, i haven't given a chance to plusplus yet
>>108277620>>108279095Me too, I bought a PC magazine in 2000, and it had a Mandrake CD as a covermount. I've been a Linux user since then. As far as I'm concerned, Linux was ready for the desktop with Mandrake. It's the original Ubuntu. Good times.
