I was doing some client work recently. They're a bank, where most of their engineering is offshored one of the big offshore companies. The offshore team had to access everything via virtual desktops, and one of the restrictions was no virtualisation within the virtual desktop - so tooling like Docker was banned.I was really surprsied to see modern JVM development going on, without access to things like TestContainers, LocalStack, or Docker at all.To compound matters, they had a single shared dev env, (for cost reasons), so the team were constantly breaking each others stuff. How common is this? Also, curious what kinds of workarounds people are using?

I just had to give it some build feedback every now and then between working because I was using codex in WSL and I was running it on windows. It's so over. I remember about 5 years ago I had to make an openGL ES renderer and utils to replace Sceneform for ARCore after Google dropped support for it. There were some compatibility issue with our android app and the last version of google Sceneform, and I couldn't get a release waiver or whatever from legal for some non-google open source replacement, so I had to do a lot of it from scratch while following tutorials and books. I think it took me like a month to get a basic renderer working, given I was also working on other tickets. Well my current employer just rolled out claude code to everyone with opus and sonnet 4.5 and 4.6 coming soon.Anyway, I think you have like a year before AI becomes so ubiquitous that this entire industry collapses. I would start thinking about ways to make and sell finished products/brands on the side to make some money in the meantime.

Started working for a startup in November 2025 and I’m graduating with my Masters in May. How long should I stay here before jumping ship? 2 years from my technical start date (November 2027) or from my graduation (May 2028)?Worked at Oracle as a junior dev for 2 years between graduating from undergrad and starting my masters, interned for MLB during the summer, have AWS SAA and CKAD. I think I’m in a terrible limbo where I’m way too overqualified for associate roles while recruiters think I don’t have enough experience for mid level roles. The startup is my attempt at stacking lots of experience in very little time to break out of the hell hole of associate/mid and into senior roles. I’ve already refactored the entire codebase that was coded by jeets

A current woodworking tech project that in progress is a 2 player bar stool height retro arcade. I also had a period of playing with esp8266s programmed in Arduino IDE but after months of testing, went with a raspberry pi pico W running micropython. That things been running outside in the cold for over a year straight now, only time it failed was when the step-down converter blew. I ordered 2 more just in case. Current WIP is a supermicro server i started building in november. 32GB DDR4 LRDIM was still $50 each and i bought four of them. I wish i bought 4 more to fill up the empty space. I threw an nvidia p40 into it and had to print a fan chassis but the case fans were shit and i got some 15k RPM fan and I could just rant about fans and zones and ipmi and bmc but the main issue is i didnt want to remove the 5.25in caddy covering the FanA header that i barely got on because it was smooshing down on 9 sata cables. So that led to rewiring the thing with low profile cables and im glad i did because it looks cleaner and now that these loud AF case fans are in FanA i can adjust the zone. Actually getting what i wanted involved having a setup script calibrate the fans by adjusting the duty cycles for 1-100% and recording what each fan in each zones min and max RPM and at what low duty cycle does the BMC stop forcing it to max and when it accepts a low value duty cycle. Then it also watches cpu temps and the p40 temps and adjust the duty cycle of each zone. I feel like im rambling, i took my eepy meds 2 and half hours ago and the HHC is kicking in

A controls team, risk partners, really detailed evidence and approval processes. For the project you're on, where you are making changes to 10 assets on a product's flow, you need project funding to actually pay those assets for their time in planning (progressive elaboration) and then dev, test, hypercare. You are in competition with every other project trying to get their capacity for that quarter. In theory, this is all resolved as a part of quarterly planning, where you project's value rank and readiness has been determined (including if all other teams you need have capacity that quarter, and in flight dev work takes priority over new work). It's amazing how fast you can burn through 20 mil

>>108293505It just annoys me since my mindset is "push something small, do incremental changes based on feedback" but management always wants to come and sweep and go "ACKTUALLY WE NEED TO ADD ALL THIS SHIT RIGHT NOW oh and can it stroke my dick off? no not yet? hmm let me talk to bobby about this he really wanted the stroke your dick feature in it." then the project gets paused/dropped only for it to be brought up weeks later and then management goes "why has progress stopped???" mother fucker because I told you I can't add stroke your dick into this and you said bobby really really wants it. >>108293031i didn't push the project onto anyone else. i built it from the ground up all by myself but the deployment date the company scheduled unfortunately fell on a day i had a trip planned with my family. i then built a script that would deploy the entire thing with a simple command so anyone could do it while i was away. it's not my fault they picked a deployment date that coincided with a family trip and i'm not picking a company over quality time with my family ALSO it turns out that the person who assigned me the project in the first place omitted part of the scope, so the deployment didn't even cover everything the customer wanted. even if it had succeeded we STILL would've had to do it all over again
