I was doing some client work recently. They're a bank, where most of their engineering is offshored one of the big offshore companies.

The offshore team had to access everything via virtual desktops, and one of the restrictions was no virtualisation within the virtual desktop - so tooling like Docker was banned.

I was really surprsied to see modern JVM development going on, without access to things like TestContainers, LocalStack, or Docker at all.

To compound matters, they had a single shared dev env, (for cost reasons), so the team were constantly breaking each others stuff.

How common is this? Also, curious what kinds of workarounds people are using?

Well my current employer just rolled out claude code to everyone with opus and sonnet 4.5 and 4.6 coming soon.

i do a lot of DIY projects, sometimes building with wood, or designing a 3d model to print for something specific. A current woodworking tech project that in progress is a 2 player bar stool height retro arcade. I also had a period of playing with esp8266s programmed in Arduino IDE but after months of testing, went with a raspberry pi pico W running micropython. That things been running outside in the cold for over a year straight now, only time it failed was when the step-down converter blew. I ordered 2 more just in case. Current WIP is a supermicro server i started building in november. 32GB DDR4 LRDIM was still $50 each and i bought four of them. I wish i bought 4 more to fill up the empty space. I threw an nvidia p40 into it and had to print a fan chassis but the case fans were shit and i got some 15k RPM fan and I could just rant about fans and zones and ipmi and bmc but the main issue is i didnt want to remove the 5.25in caddy covering the FanA header that i barely got on because it was smooshing down on 9 sata cables. So that led to rewiring the thing with low profile cables and im glad i did because it looks cleaner and now that these loud AF case fans are in FanA i can adjust the zone. Actually getting what i wanted involved having a setup script calibrate the fans by adjusting the duty cycles for 1-100% and recording what each fan in each zones min and max RPM and at what low duty cycle does the BMC stop forcing it to max and when it accepts a low value duty cycle. Then it also watches cpu temps and the p40 temps and adjust the duty cycle of each zone.
