Yep, the good old times are gone. My friend only did some basic PHP internship and then applied for some C# position he was not even qualified for and they hired him as a junior then taught him. He then had some formal employment history in the field and went back to PHP for a somewhat large company in the country, he then got a bit social with managers and got flown to some meet up/event kind of thing where he networked a little, long story short he ended working for a large fintech company abroad.
