I hate data hoarders so much it's unreal
>>
This is why they invented torrents. Mass downloaders actually help the distribution of files, as long as they seed of course.
>>
>piracy websites and archives dropping like flies
>titles being delisted, with no official way to buy them anymore
>"problematic" titles being censored, with no official way to access the original versions
>everything moving to subscription-based where you lose access the moment you stop paying
Data hoarding will continue until the situation improves (lol).
>>
>>108295239
This, the problem is faggots hoarding the data on some shitty website then being shocked that people download files from it.
>>
This thread is going to devolve into a drivelet support group. Enjoy your pity party, I’m going to just download the internet.
>>
>>108295207
Data hoarders were always right. I didn't listen until after storage got expensive and may not get cheaper any time soon if ever.
>>
>>108295207

>>
>>108295293
why aren't all those hoarders making websites then
>>
>>108295207
sounds like a problem for "someone" whoever they are. why should I give a shit about what "someone" hosts
>>

>>
>>108295207
Data hoarding is a like a bank rush, people only do it because they're afraid the place hosting the files won't be there much longer. Its partially self fulfilling, but is usually also the only winning move for any person who may want those files in the future.
>>
>>108295648
Why would you host a website?
>>
The hoarders are right. I haven't contributed to myrient's current hammering but I can assure you that's only because I obtained the sets I wanted years ago already from GGn, Ugg (RIP), Blackcats (RIP) and other sources that distribute large files the way they are supposed to be - via torrents.

Sites come and go. The data is the only thing that matters. RIP mininova.

myrient never cared about preservation
anna's archive distributes everything by torrents and splits the torrents up so people can download as many as they want as possible and also before that made sure there are hoarders with full copies out there and also backed up other libraries they same way

Besides the issue isn't hoarders. It's the massive influx of new users people who never even knew it ever existed now flooding it to try to download shit

90% of its issues could be sold by sectioning off a top 50 games from each console or some shit to let them go rape that server

Remind me of "the Japanese Game Preservation Society"
They took donations in money and games, and used the money to store all the donated games in a building in a bunch of boxes. Journalists and academics could contact them to request access to the building to look at the games. The rest of the public could look at the game list online, and an occasional newsletter about recent donations. Then they ran out of money, and are begging for funds so they can pay the rent.

All he had to do was offer torrents. In fact only offer torrents using magnet links on the main site. I doubt those old roms are being updated that often. Then he can just have the entire collection on his seedbox and rate limit clients to protect his costs and encourage seeding.

>>
>>108295239
Myrient were very driven by a personal desire for giving everyone the optimal, premium experience of being able to download freely and easily but this was always going to be abused.
What SHOULD have happened was the most popular and mass downloaded files got distributed as torrents and then the less popular and niche stuff (magazine scans, promo videos, beta editions, random leaks etc) would be served as direct downloads.
The popular stuff would probably get seeded at least enough to offset the worst of the server costs, while the niche stuff wouldn't cost much to host at all. Doing that system or something like it would have saved the site very easily in the long run, to say nothing of giving small incentives to host/seed to other likeminded individuals.

I do find it strange that their costs were so high though, even at the current inflated prices for hardware actually outright buying that much storage and paying for bandwidth should be as expensive as that right? I'm no expert so I could be wrong.

this, piracy was resolved years ago with torrenting, there is no reason for a retard to hoard all the files. This time was because of poor logistic, but could have been a tantrum, forced to fight in ukraine, dead by ligma, corporate takedown, etc, that would have caused the site to go down.

No, but they can just wait until you die and the house clearance firm throws all your hard drives in the trash. Zoomers don't know what torrents are and wouldn't care about game "preservation" even if they did. It's pretty much inevitable that when today's 40 year olds begin dying off, things will start being lost forever. Hell, that's already happening. Once you get past the 6th gen of consoles and into the era of digital games, title updates and DLC, the amount of stuff that's been preserved drastically goes down. Tons of stuff from Xbox Live and Playstation Network is already unavailable and unarchived, leaving only the slim hope it'll be found by chance on some old hard drive one day.

Why are game preservation torrents always huge batches of files rather than having individual torrents per file? Having different torrents for each collection splits seeders across the many different batches, rather than everyone having game X version Y seeding the exact same file. It also obsoletes the old torrent whenever the batch gets updated. (Archive.org is worst about this, generating new torrents whenever ANYTHING including metadata is changed.)

It also seems inconvenient on the downloader side. I have plenty of space and bandwidth and just hoard all the roms, but this isn't the case for everyone who just wants to play that one SNES game he's been hearing about. I knew a dude from Belgium where they apparently have bandwidth caps on wired connections and he had to download Steam games at work across the border to preserve bandwidth at home. Yes, you can seek out a full romset torrent and start it paused, then unselect all files except the one you want, but I can't blame people for not knowing that or not wanting to go through the effort. Wouldn't it be much more convenient if you could just go "hey, you should check out this game, here's the magnet link" to share a single file? For the entire collection you can just share a text file with all the magnet links which can be mass imported by any decent client.
>>
>>108303534
>piracy was resolved years ago with torrenting
Torrents are sadly not a perfect solution. Torrenting can be detected and blocked (or hindered even unintentionally by ISPs cheaping out, e.g. >>108298815 >>108298819) and to the best of my knowledge cannot be done properly in a private manner. As long as the internet is free and the content isn't TOO illegal it works, but if they were to crack down on piracy harder it would collapse even worse than romsites.

The myrient dude was a bit naive not too put controls on that bandwidth. Just force them to pay up if they want to download everything or something. There's plenty to do to enforce rate limits.
>>
>>108295207
I'm 99% percent sure a lot of the downloading was just glowies and the like stressing the servers to get the site to bleed money and shut down

P2P works great for a lot of things, probably even most games. But when it comes to PC games, the swarm will always converge on the Super Ultra Mega Repack Big Titty Mod Edition after a few months because it's ready to play and they can seed it without having to keep the useless (to them) setup files on their hard drive

Hoarders are just mentally ill lazy assholes.
They will still only play what other people recommend them, thus making the hoard behaviour meaningless.

You can litearlly just select what you want in the torrent, I was downloading NDS roms just now and I do like 1k games at a time cuz ssd is almost full.

As for having to change a torrent everytime there is a change that is because torrents are hashes. It's a temporary problem because once the collection is complete the final torrent stays unchanged henceforth.

Do Americanese ISPs not provide IPv6? CGNAT is only an issue on IPv4.

/ptg/ master race here

Torrents solve this problem but it requires you to seed the files. You shitters don't seed your files. Inside our walled gardens with enforced seeding we do not have these problems because our people seed. Hoarding is not a bad thing if you actually intend to distribute what you are taking. Even if I have more content than I consume I distribute it so others can have access as well.

Before you bitch at me I share plenty with the public. I don't just seed on private trackers.

Usecase for datahording when you can just generate anything you want from an LLM?
>>

>Usecase for datahording when you can just generate anything you want from an LLM?
I have over 3000 mocies and TV series and couple of hundred thousand books including pretty much everything of note civilisation has. It's genuiney pathetic that you think an LLM could write without having been trained on it anything like Platos Repubic or create Full Metal Jacket, or something like John Lee Hooker, BB King, Johnny Cash or the Prodigy or even Galaxians or Silent Hill. It can do second rate mimicry, not create Fraiser or Lawrence of Arabia

>want to generate cowboy on horse

two more weeks right?
>>
>>108321665
I have an LLM on my offline lan, gemini, it has access to offline encyclopedias and all the media metafiles and just acts as a search. I don't use it much desu, I tend to use voice commands on media extenders because I'm a lazy fucker

this, if you're going to host tons of stuff, do it with torrents. Even archive.org does this, if you want hoarders to contribute, give them a method of doing so

You miss the point. LLMs/LDMs are literally just corporations laundering copyrighted materials for you.

Instead of downloading a file you can just stream an arbitrary approximation whenever. It would be trivial to use seedance 2.0 to compress all of breaking bad into a few GB

>it's not data hoarders its quantity of normies using the site
>normies
it's third worlders. they're too poor to donate to causes like this even if they weren't selfish wretches. white men seed torrents and donate to websites they appreciate. picrel was from 2018 so we can only imagine just how much worse things are now and how much bandwidth is being used by third world filth the cost of which lands on the operators of websites. i know people are pretty stingy about donating to websites but a service like myrient could likely exist for many, many years if they simply blocked ip addresses from third world countries who drive up the operating costs of websites while offering nothing in the way of donations.

I hate databrokers the most, datahoarders are cool though if they do it for the love of the hustle.
