people just arent as interested in ricing anymore it seems. wayland adoption has also forced users to choose between either kde, gnome or hyprland, all of which are very limited and standardized in terms of customization compared to what is available on x11

>>108302333
checked.

>>108302343
i feel like i should take offense to this given that other than those two tde rices i've had i dont really have any real rice (maybe save for those gnome ones like picrel but i barely count them as such, i still leaned to the vanilla gnome paradigm and all the changes are nothing short of cosmetic and even then minimal)

>>108302401
i wouldnt really blame wayland adoption in the death of ricing, there's more wl compositors than the three you provided, i'm pretty sure sway is one of them. plus, it's not like package managers are just going to stop providing xorg packages, right? (right??????)

>>108302684 (cont.)
even if xorg gets completely axed from repos there are going to be efforts to port xorg window managers into wayland, such as wlmaker, being a port of windowmaker and dwl being a port of
dwm, as of today there is an effort to port xfce to wayland.
i personally don't really mind wayland, but i do mind the axing of choice, i believe that alternatives should exist and i believe it is up to the end user to choose if they want to pick xorg or wl.

>>108302685
i see you are minimal purist, kind of adore these setups. that your render by the way? did you do it on blender or made your own ray tracing renderer (i can tell it's ray tracing)?
>>
>>108302684
>i wouldnt really blame wayland adoption in the death of ricing,
i am going to blame wayland
>there's more wl compositors than the three you provided,
well of cause but none of them are used probably because of a lack of functionality. i dont really know why but it just seems to me that wayland rices lack the creativity and unusual UX design that makes interesting rices novel to look at. whether that is reflective of the userbase or limitations inherent in the few wayland implementations actually used i cant say
>>
>>108302768
i'm certain its a userbase thing, good rices have generally died off since mid-2010s
>>
>>108302760
>did you do it on blender or made your own ray tracing renderer (i can tell it's ray tracing)?
unfortunately, no. this render is from Ivan Kuckir's 3D Tool (https://3dtool.ivank.net/). I am working on a software rasterizer though
>>
>>108302947
interesting, hope to see the rasterizer someday

What reason is there to have a desktop background? Who is staring at their computer without a program open?
>>
>>108303216
i rarely use my programs maximized, especially web browsers and chatting apps, every website is designed like shit and having my browser be closer to a 4:3 ratio or generally in a smaller window just makes it better for me to read websites and chat logs

>you are the reason OSs are getting cucked with age verification
it's not like the politicians that are responsible for those shitty regulations are the ones that have been on the epstein island in the first place, no, turns out it was me just because i happened to have a wallpaper depicting a 17 year old character (which isn't even my favourite character compared to say haruhara haruko from the same anime) from my favourite anime
>>
>>108303417
People are speculating too much as to why these die, when it's 2 simple things.
1 - Nobody really cares about ricing anymore, and besides, you can only rice so much, everything has already been made/done.
2 - People ITT are always hostile if it's a macOS or a Windows post, and those used to be at least 50% of posts back in < 2017, now just ignored or shit talked.
And on top of those 2 just go take a look at https://4stats.io/ - /g/ specifically. It's just dead/dying.

there will never be an fvwm or awesomewm equivalent on wayland since the wayland protocol simply isnt as flexible as the x11 libraries. wms on x11 are just clients of the xserver which is way more hackable than any wayland implementation

xwayland only works for applications that simply needs x11 compatibility inside that specific xwayland instance, thats completely different. a DE/WM on x11 interacts with the xserver directly and can manipulate the entire xstack through global states. xwayland runs an xserver in its own instance on top of wayland. similarly, wine runs on top of the linux kernel, but that doesnt mean you can run a windows system on linux, now does it?

Shame about these threads, mine hasn't really changed that much since I've been busy with some other things that aren't particularly 'visual'.

Included GHex in the screenshot because it's part of what I'm working on - a GTK4 widget library alternative to libadwaita that's better suited for most other DEs like XFCE, KDE, Cinnamon, even Windows really. If it gets off the ground maybe it will be useful for other theme authors, that's my intention anyway.

yadda yadda yadda /g/ has fallen. Probably graphical customization is dead because as some other anon said everything has truly been tried in terms of rice.
Maybe the way forwards is making threads about neat, miscelaneous, linux related projects.
Maybe someone trying to make a sort of PDA with an RPi, maybe someone trying to make a smart home project, maybe someone doing radio nerdery. Idk, I think that maybe we've struck the limit quite a while ago, because I still remember that one redditard that made a sort of boot-up animation that looked like a Nier Automata themed initialization sequence and that realistically whoops our asses in terms of skill needed but it goes into the point in which it just looks... excesive.

well, i've already spilled my guts once, why not another?
i once talked about trying to get myself back together, i refused to give details due to the nature of this website, particularly the fake and gay aspect. i, a fool, tried to find a girlfriend (contrary to the belief of absolutely none, i lack a sister), problem was i was lonely enough to not know how to behave around a girl and while i did ask her to tell me if i was ever imposing something on her or generally being too much for her, thing was she never told me, she didn't even read the last few telegram messages i sent, i couldn't even sleep because of that, still cannot. today i actually couldnt sleep till 5 in the morning since i was thinking about her, and when i did, she appeared in my dreams, telling me that i should stop worrying about it and that she is willing to keep seeing me.
>>
>>108343108
i ask no advice here, i wish to lament upon this by myself since it is my fault in the first place, not hers, i don't blame her for distancing herself from me, what really hurts is that she left me hanging for almost a month and counting.

I've had a good run with Gnome, it's what I've used the most since I started using Linux, got in love with it because of the pop shell, but now because System 76 is making cosmic, pop shell is becoming sort of trash and freezing my gnome setup, and probably in the future ti will no longer have gnome support, so I just migrated to Hyprland that does what I need/want to do with my desktop.

Maybe I'm ass at TWMs but everytime I try them they feel clunky. Ideally there would be one that uses both mouse and keyboard where they can be rearranged with mouse & made to float but open up as tiling. Anyways, the virtual desktops for KDE are so smooth that my workflow never really feels cluttered.

most tiling WMs can do what you say but some are quite janky about it
AwesomeWM has a decent float mode and is very response to dragging windows around with the mouse. I have found some older WMs that can technically do mouse actions feel like shit (xmonad is the king of "I can do this" but it all feels awful because it all hinges on extensions written in like 2009)
You may find something like Niri interesting (scrolling window manager)
Generally though, tiling WMs just take a different approach to using them
When I first switched, I found it clunky but now I find floating extremely clunky and frustrating.
WMs in general are simply more of a headache to configure compared to DEs like KDE though so I can understand if that's not interesting.
