It generates the text token by token and there isn't even any real continuity between those steps. You can generate N tokens, stick them in the context window of a different instance running on an unrelated machine and have it continue. If you copy the PRNG state, it will produce the same output the first instance would have produced. Or you could have a completely different model continue it seamlessly. It's essentially a memoryless process except for the output itself.
