Just got my "new" T14 gen 1 AMD, it came with 16GB of ram "soldered", there's still one empty ram slot, 256GB nvme, 1080p touchscreen, it even comes with a fingerprint thingy.
It looks brand new, no shiny spots and no scratches, I'm really happy, got it for 270€.

Yes, I know this is a retarded question that can be answered with "just Google it", but I'd like a second opinion and Google has been reduced to dust by AI slop. No budget (although I'm still probably buying something used)—what's the best ThinkPad I can buy for casual use that can still function without immediately fucking dying at the sight of any game or program?
>>
>>108310250
funny thing but you know depends, think to yourself, do you want to carry a 14/16 inch laptop? Or is it going to be something that will not travel with you. This also depends on what games or programs you are going to use on it. Example, my x260 with an i5 6200u can do lighter gaming, so for example I can run half life 2, fallout new vegas, and although it will sound like a jet is trying to take off, it can handle it. I can watch 1080p videos on youtube with no issues. If you are using any graphical programs like idk krita or something it's fine, editing is something I've not tried on it but is probably going to suck ass.
>>
>>108310039

I just bought 3rd party batteries. I think my new internal T480 battery is SHIT
>>
how do i use the touchpad without having my arm cramp after 5 minutes
>>
>>108310383
Definitely travel—I'm looking to replace the piece of shit Lenovo YOGA I have that falls apart more every time I drive somewhere. I don't play newer games; my library is mostly limited to older generation games (Minecraft, TF2/GMOD/CS:S/HL2, BO2/BO3 although it's been a few years). I do use Krita a lot. I don't mind if it's loud, but if I'm shilling out the money I might want something that is a little less loud.
>>
>>108310428
You bought from somewhere that accepts returns, right anon?

>>108310473
Use the nipple instead, reach for the touchpad only when you need the extra precision

>>108310608
You could get a T480s for a premium build with good-enough performance, or a T14 G2 AMD for a good-enough build with enough performance to last you >5 years
>>
>>108310608
I am going to doubt the fun in playing online games like tf2 or cs:s on anything outside of a full on desktop with a proper keyboard and a responsive mice, but anything single player like minecraft gmod hl2 should be fine on my laptop, bo2/bo3 is questionable I cannot speak in this matter. If You do not care about an ethernet port and want something as light as possible I'd aim for an x280, (it comes with some sacrifices tho, it is definitely not for everyone since it only has a internal battery, smaller range of ports, but it is very, very slim compared to a x270) if you want something small and easly reparable or whatever x270 is the newest 12.5 inch laptop with both internal and external battery, swappable ram, but as the guy above said if can manage carrying the 14 inch laptop then t480s is always a better option in case of performance, but still be sure to double check the screen resolution before you go for an older used one, some of these laptops come with a 1366x768 display, always double check the display resolution unless you do not care about having a nicer display.
>>
>>108310404

I'm the new twinkpadder from the last thread with a lot of questions
I got a refurb P14s g2 d 5650u 16gb 500gb on ebay for 282€ (only catch it was bidding listings) and it surprisingly handles games even in single channel ram mode.
I downloaded a bunch of shit overnight so I can come back later and give you an estimate of the performance if you want. I think the most modern games I DLd were cs2 and darktide but haven't tried them yet. DRG ran decently in the rig but I haven't tried a mission yet.
in eu this was basically my best price to performance.
I'm sure if you get some 4650u one it will run older games as well.

I got an intel gen2 with no nvme and 8gb soldered. Really wish it were 16gb soldered. I put in a 16gb stick and a 1tb nvme I already had and paid $60 for. The iris xe graphics really are amazing. It will actually run games surprising for an igpu to handle. But it does require a good 2nd stick of ram to work. The 8gb stick in the 2nd slot it came with really hurt performance. I really wouldn't buy an amd apu from before 2024 when they actually got good.
>>

idk man my 5650u seems pretty good.

If you are reading this and planning on librebooting your thinkpad in the future. DO NOT BUY THE BLACK CHINKSHIT SOIC8 CLIP. After a few uses it lost all of its clamping power and is no longer able to keep itself on a chip. Pomona clips are double the price but way better quality.

anyone leave their thinkpad closed, doing background stuff or downloads, and remote into it from their phone to see the progress without having to take it out and open it, or if you're away?

I have two questions thinkpad chuds, i fixed my t430 with a new display and memory ram, turned out it was the fucking flex cable broken inside the hinge hidden (fuck my shit up) so i got a new flex cable then i realized my battery suddenly died and could not fix due to old bios version (fuck my shit up again) so i get a new battery and updated bios to the one that takes any battery lenovo or not.

So now i have a relatively great t430 but i have two questions

1_During my "fix the battery attempts" i installed lenovo vantage, this thing in theory has the option to make battery last longer by having a more modern laptop driver that chooses to only charge battery at certain times to extend battery life cycles yet the piece of shit can't be minimized and i do not think it works if the app is not open.

2_Is it worth to add a i7 3840QM or will it fuck battery life even more?

I pieced together another w530 after last having one in 2016 which had a k2000m, 32gb ram, 3940xm for about $1k. Blew that one up with a egpu over expresscard, killed southbridge chip, and reballed and soldered a new chip but my skills were lacking then, so it was toast. S

Finally pieced another w530 with same specs together this moth for about $500 total, and i run into the same gay battery dilemma. I have tried recelling these before but didnt know about bms suiciding if it loses power. Thats an easy fix, and I have few packs of new 18650s from panasonic with pre welded tabs. I have recelled stupider batteries so it is not too concerning. However, How the FUCK do you get these packs open cleanly, lighter fluid nor alcohol breaks their supposed adhesive apart. I have already done a few thinkpad batteries and the casing always tears instead of fully seperating.

I have a gundam model kit type of ultrasonic knife cutting station so perhaps i can cut along seems, but it has these tiny overlapping tabs that i dont wanna chop. Is there some gay trick im not getting???

Guys I am a little confused by a few comments a few threads ago, I asked at the time but no one responded.

Someone had asked if there is any use for an X230 now, and a few people said no. I have an X230 and it is great for most things. It doesn't have a dedicated GPU so that counts out a lot of stuff, but otherwise it does pretty much anything you should expect of a cheap modern laptop. I actually use it just as much as my main because I just like it is all.

So what is it that I'm supposed to not be able to do with it? Why do some of you think it is so limiting that it shouldn't even be considered?

I just went straight to the opposite side of the spectrum and bought a Z13, but you'd probably be better off with either a Ryzen X13 G2/3/4 or just a T14 G2/3/5.

you can get 845 g8 for that price or t14

How's the build quality of the X280?
I want a small laptop to use in bed.

Beats me as well
I keep using 2012 era business notebooks - and they can handle anything I do with them except for gaming past cs:src while my t14g2 amd keeps collecting dust.
2170p is better for mobile shitposting/anime on sofa and such.
8470p docked + 3 monitors works fine as workstation in my workroom
w530 - proxmox hosts my homelab with 32GB of cheap memory..
Holiday house has about 4 of them waiting for their users to show up.

X280 is fine. They fixed the chassis flex that plagued the x240-x270 models. Be advised - soldered ram - so buy accordingly.
>>
>>108337855
Depending on the keyboard you might be able to swap your old trackpoint module over into it with a considerable amount of trouble.

why i5?
>>
>>108338540
better performance as it doesn't overheat
8th gen i7 cpus should be avoided
>>
>>108338302
hmm yea there appear to be two screws that house the module hidden under the G and H keys and i'm pretty sure i might just wreck the scissor switches like the last time i tried opening up a similar keyboard so hell i'mma hold off on that... already filed a return for the thing anyway, will try another sample made by darfon instead of this clone.

even if i were to attempt it, though, it might just be a waste since the old keyboard's module is already worn, hence the replacement
>>
>>108338652
nta but my i7-8650U T480 doesn't overheat and performance is slightly better than the i5 one I had before

Does anyone know if you can libreboot the T*80 series without flashing the thunderbolt chip? For some reason my EEPROM has epoxy on pin 5 and its basically impossible to flash the chip unless I buy a hot air station and remove the IC to flash it.

Does it? Doing what, and using which OS? What actual temperatures do you hit?

I just now did my thermal paste and gave it a good clean and I'm getting ~5 degrees cooler under load, no difference at idle though. It was actually surprisingly clean and the paste looked OK, but it was nearly 10 years since its been done.

So anyways now I get low 30s at idle, low 60s under heavy load. Before it was low 30s at idle, up to high 60s under heavy load and occasionally into the 70s. Maybe your fan has an issue if you are getting a lot more than this? Or you fucked up the pasting?

Enjoy your superior screen (this is almost universal when it comes to clarity and color reproduction with Lenovoshit). Disable the touch input in your OS.

Kingsener from Aliexpress.

Make sure you read the instructions otherwise its capacity will quickly diminish.

If you haven't used Aliexpress before, make sure you use a burner e-mail and phone number, otherwise Chang will give that shit out to literally everyone.

about to get my second thinkpad just to learn linux, experiment and break shit, as well as support me in my writing away from home. because my main one is a p15 and while i don't mind the weight, whipping that massive thing out in public is ridiculous and scares the hoes. what should i get? t480?

i'm looking at a T420 for $30. boots and the chassis looks intact but no battery's installed. u think it's worth getting regardless? thing's cheap but i wonder what i'd need a 2011 laptop for

buy a chink battery for the t420 which are plentiful and cheap and not half bad, via aliexpress. Main concerns are replacing the HDD with an SSD and giving the thing a clean and repaste, if you so desire.

how is freebsd support on newer thinkpads? i have an amd t16 g2 thats running fedora as a secondary computer, but id like to play around with freebsd. unfortunately, there dont seem to be functional drivers for virtio gpus in freebsd, or at least theres no resources i can find or understand that make them usable, so playing with frebsd in qemu is limited to the command line for me.

id like to put it on a physical machine that isnt i386-based and see if i can use it daily. do you use freebsd on your thinkpad? what issues have you encountered?
>>
I found a T14 gen 1, i5 10210u, 16/256gb for $205. This is $40-ish below the average prices in Romania because most sellers are delusional. Does this model have any big issues?

>>
>>108335898

Think of all the shit we could do with our computers back then. I remember running Skyrim soon after launch on a laptop that was already shit for that time with only integrated graphics. Imagine trying that now with the biggest game of the year, totally unconscionable. I was using it for music production, emulation, basic 3D modeling, image editing with GIMP, all sorts of mid-level stuff. Like sure you will be limited on certain things, but you can do most things a normal person would be using a laptop for in daily life.

I use it as my bed laptop, if I want to watch videos or do some casual programming or browsing in bed I use that one, and its not like its a compromise fro convenience, it isn't limited in any way at all for that type of use. I couldn't use it as a main only because I need fairly high specs for some of my work, but that isn't typical for most people. Most people who think they need that are stuck in the early 2000s. I keep wanting to buy another just because the value for money is crazy compared to modern slop, but I have no use for it.
>>
>>108348731
If the resolution is 768p, run.
The 45 NTSC panels aren't great, but for that price I'd be shocked if it has a better one.
Great deal though if it's in good condition.

>>
>>108352295
The price of a 1080p panel so around 40-50€ probably. You could also look for older models that aren't at all worse (T490, T480s) but could be cheaper. Every T480s has at least 1080p IPS, unlike T490/T14G1.
