But you have to copy and paste a few terminal commands to get codecs from RPM Fusion! It's literally unusable compared to Windows!

Fedora is broadly a good distro, modulo the codec patent autism and an abnormally high number of packaging bugs for how supposedly close to the upstream they like to market themselves. There are bugs in their noto fonts with open bug reports including spoonfed fix patches rotting for years and they have firewalld configured by default such that wireguard is simply completely non functional if you happen to have a working ipv6 address. However, if Windows were to somehow become non functional tomorrow, it's probably what I would use. My question to you is, what were you doing wrong on Windows to not have time to go out with friends to a movie?
this distro glows in the dark

Fedora is nice, it's quite stable and user friendly while being relatively up to date (waiting 6 months for big updates is no problem for me). After trying out a bunch of stuff Fedora is the one I stayed on.Recently I was trying out CachyOS for a while but got tired of the level of micro management where I would install something and then spend the next hour figuring out all the configs I needed to create and extra packages I needed to install to make it work whereas on Fedora it worked immediately so I came back.>>108326017I actually preferred Debian to Fedora because generally I don't need everything to be super up to date and it's nice to be on a SUPER stable OS you can get comfy on that stays the same for a long time instead of updates changing things up but unfortunately I have an Nvidia card and it was all sorts of annoying there because they use old drivers and installing the new drivers from Nvidia instead of Debian repo resulted in problems (as they warn).>>108326353It is not corpo owned, they are just supporting Fedora development because it's upstream for RHEL. They can't dictate what changes the OS receives, they are just one voice of the community. For example they suggested optional telemetry and everyone else said no and that was that.>>108326428If this actually happens in a way that collects any sort of data from me instead of just being a checkbox I will move distros but until then I'm staying. And yes, there will always be distros that don't require you to do that since California, US or even the whole western world is not the only place to release distros.

>>108326784It's still kind of a thing. Insofar as it's not it's only because everyone and their grandma knows to use VLC now (actually VLC sucks but I digress). You still need to download codecs for them to work in the native photo/video players and get thumbnails. For AV1, HEIF, HEVC, JXL, mpeg-2, webp, vp8, vp9, and raw.
Fedora will be kill soon as daddy RH tells them to cooperate with the AV laws.
>>108325930I always saw it as a corporate cuck distro, but it's as free as anything else and is just much more stable and polished than debian and arch (+derivatives). Fedora silverblue/atomic is even better for newbies and stability in general. It really is the best way to experience GNU/Linux for most people right now and it's not even close.

>>108326813>>108326784It's incredible the average /g/ users don't know WHY codecs are not installed ootb.Legally, they can't. They're US based operating systems backed by a US legal entity. Microsoft, Red Hat, Apple, can't give licensed codecs they don't own. So users have to install them. Microsoft and some linux distros offer a package to install them for a fee, otherwise you get them from another package/installer.
>>108327326People keeps saying this since the 00's and it keeps growing.
