And this was before silicone headphones were popular, so you'd have to jam a hard piece of plastic into your ear to hear a shitty version of Semi Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind you recorded by holding the microphone up to the radio. That's what made my generation tough. Everyone born after 1997 is a worthless piece of shit.

you could get earbuds with a thin foam padding, or get such generic padding online and apply to your earbuds
not only it fixes comfort (no more hard plastic directly in contact with ear), it also somewhat improves the sound by adding a tiny bit of color to it

>people hated windows vista back
I never met anyone that felt that way despite the sentiment being parroted around.
This was so overblown at the time that Microsoft released that Mojave ad or whatever it was.
I don't even know where that myth stems from. Vista was a great leap ahead for the OS in regards to how it handled drivers and obviously issues most of the V1s for any new system APIs.
The OS did not have any real issues as far as I remember, it was driver vendors having unstable drivers during the initial wave.
Windows 7 is highly regarded and it's just the last iteration of Vista's base. The difference was less the OS and more just that people had learned the new APIs by then and software updates for drivers etc had already been propagated. But that's more an issue with third parties.
>>
>>108327428
>the "zoomer" screenshot has Windows Vista which was released in 2007

the windows vista one is a theme, not the actual windows vista.
>they typically praise only the looks, not the whole system
>again, they have no first hand experience with it to even know what problems it had
it’s still odd, but people didn’t care about the design at all, but i like when some of them were inspired by the optimism of the post war era, plus the futuristic designs reminds me of the advertising and concepts from that period.

Late Millennial, Early Gen Z here. Some call us Zillennials.
Some of us never had the privilege of using XP and were stuck on 2000 until Vista.
Vista was such a disaster than everyone jumped to 7 right away when it came out in 2009, and rumors of "Win7 2007" were commonplace. Everyone was praying for 7 and it emerged as our savior from Vista, hence the nostalgia.
>>
>>108327467
I am not saying 98 counts as windows nt 5.0, i was just saying that windows 98 still counts since it was still common in the early 2000's, windows me was less common and received the same hate as windows vista and recently windows 11, that’s why people picked windows 2000 or waited until windows xp due to windows me compatibly problems and how it give bsod everytime.

>>
>>108327624
I think it may have been location dependent.
In my area, most Boomer parents stuck to 2000, which led to the schools being on 2000.
>people who could buy a new computer every few years
In my area, this described the XP people.
Since everyone was on 2000 and needed to upgrade, so they "upgraded" to Vista.
Vista was so bad, any location dependence ended up gone by Windows 7.

I think YOU might've been a bit too young, actually.
You're arguing about the most useless shit possible regarding a configurable OS like windows XP.
Your arguments throughout the entire thread are about visual, UI, and aesthetics, something you could change very easily even being a beginner. I mean, my XP looked completely different from the default and I was 9.
If you're the brazillian in this thread, you might've just been poor, but if you're seriously arguing about what "zoomers" think computing in the 2000s was and you actually believe your arguments here, you're probably just a self hating zoomer lmao.

Poorer families usually hold onto older technology longer. I'm from Mexico, and I remember I once went to my maid's house, where she had a really old CRT TV from the 1980s. I remember my maternal grandparents still had a computer with a CRT monitor and a CRT TV well into the 2010s, but only in my mom's old bedroom.

Then again, I remember getting a Macbook Air back when I was in 3rd grade, so roughly in 2008, and I remember we had a plasma TV at home back when they were trendy and fashionable, roughly around 2006-ish, I believe.

Mexico has a huge wealth distribution gap between upper-middle class and lower-middle class people, just like Brazil, so going to slightly less affluent neighborhoods has always felt like stepping a decade or two in the past. I went to private schools all the way to high school, so I got kind of shocked how backwards and outdated-looking the installations were at my state's public university.

As an early Zoomer (born in 1998), I don't remember Windows ME/2000 at all. I know my dad used Windows 95/98 in his office back when I was a kid, but the first home computer I used, roughly around 2005 I believe, had Windows XP, and all the computers I came across at school from around 2006 till 2012 all had Windows XP too.
Then again, I only used Macs and other Apple devices (iPads, iPhones) from 2008 till around 2017, so that meant I never got to use Windows Vista, 7, or 8, and decided to do the switch from Mac OS X Mavericks to Windows 10.

When I was still in high school ~2005 I had a super old CRT TV, I mean REALLY fuckin old like from the 70s. It didn't display properly, it had like a hall-of-mirrors effect where everything up the top was all stretched out, then closer to the middle everything was really compressed, then the bottom half of the screen displayed pretty normally. I never had my own personal computer or console, but I would get to borrow old consoles from my friends sometimes (PS1 and N64) and those were my favourite times. I'm not a thirdie by the way I'm from a poor family in a developed country.

That kind of shit means so much to you at that time. I downloaded a bunch of emulators recently and was looking through this list of thousands of games I could get totally free, and it all seemed like such a waste of time. How did I enjoy it so much? If I'd known then that in the future I'd be able to dowload the entire catalog of PS1 and PS2 games I would have freaked, but now I can't be bothered to even look at them.

I remember we had shit like Inuyasha and Naruto on TV, but you also had actual pornographic anime you could get online.
There also used to be a lot more lolicon anime and manga back in those days, as opposed to the half-assed JCs/JKs-rebranded-as-lolis stuff we've been getting since 2012 at least.

Also, I remember discussions about stuff like thighs, armpits, and feet in anime were extremely rare outside of 4chan up until 2020. Even on Reddit, that shit used to be the sort of stuff only giga-coomers would talk about, but for some reason, the Scamdemic turned everyone into some weird fucko with niche fetishes that only French artists and Japanese pornography enthusiasts would've been into in decades prior.

Frutiger Aero is the Gen Z equivalent of Vaporwave. Different aesthetic but both have a "the future that we were promised" vibe and both making fun of consumerism.

The frutiger aero community has gone against a person trying to profit from what he sees as a 'aesthetic trend'

i've only used the first one in that picture, but something about them is that i can look at the first 3 and reckon from a static image how i might use them, what are buttons and how i might expect it to react. the 4th one however, i can hardly tell the context of the screen being displayed, much less how to navigate it. i can see "home" is selected but then i also see "launch" above the game name. what's selected? anything? i couldn't say. what do the icons on the left means? i couldn't say. is the text in the middle of the screen buttons or just informational text? i couldn't say.

Sometimes I still dream of being here with my cat laying between my legs on this worn off chair. But then I realize I wake up in a huge canopy bed with a screen my childhood self could not have imagined to ever exist, surrounded by hardware that would have seemed magic 20 years ago while being affordable in this age. Its all what you make out of it. But the internet was better back then and the video gaming. It was a niche thing for enthusiasts and nerds, just as the internet itself had always been.

Even things such as grow/aquarium lights evolved so much, around 2010 LED would probably cost a fortune, now you can get a proper lamp under 50 € from China. And LED strips. Even UV ones. Those things did not exist then.

And one thing I definitely wouldn't want back is the old internet speed, 1 Mbit was considered fast, some people did not even have a flatrate or only dialup. I got flatrate in 2005, thats why I started very late in the internet while always seeing computers as devices to play video games and hoard data. But once I had torrented my first video game in this lifetime my mind quickly changed.

Thinking back to the era, it's interesting how the clash of styles was so big.
A lot of the infrastructure and people's homes was still something wood rich full of brown colors from the 60's-90's, yet you had the shiny silver gadgets of the Y2K and then the super bright and wacky early 00's experimental stuff around.
Most of the time it clashed pretty hard with the environment, but still somehow fit the cozier feel in general.
It took quite a long while for minimalism and sleek surfaces to become a thing in normal homes, but at that point the early 00's styles were already far gone and globohomo minimalism in art was the standard too.
It'll be interesting to see where we go from here.
It would make sense if corporations tried resurrecting the era, but they're incompetent as hell so I don't have high hopes for them pulling it off successfully or even realizing they should be going for it.

>>108343650

Just the same as usual, mostly outrage for the sake of it by retards, who want to rag on the younger generation for no reason.
Often the people who are "angry" were born in the late 90's or even early 00's and barely even remember anything of the era to begin with.

Honestly this was more fun. And "still something wood" -solid use of good materials from the past- is probably also something consumers would like to return. Bland and minimum effort seems more of the result of the upward redistribution of wealth than anything else to me.

During 2008-2010 it really was like the latter pic, but before I agree it was the former. I called it "Aquarium theme of Windows 7" and "transparent orbs" "transparent windows" and I did think of it as futuristic, where as XP and 2k themes as the current norm.

The best way to put it is in 2007-2009 Windows users simultaneously interacted with three design concepts

1, the world of XP's Luna and its deviations like (silver, green royale)
2, the world of business folks and schools using classic themes, or the very rare hold out Windows 2000s
3, the world of vista orbs, translucent windows, and window's 7 glass look and office 2007.

I used those koss foam earplugs in the 2000s and remember trying to shill them to anyone even remotely interested because they were just miles ahead of what most people were using.

Windows Vista became widely available in 2007, so this isn't entirely inaccurate, but it's also not for the majority of the decade. If you look elsewhere you will find the bubbly design earlier in the decade. Don't forget that Vista was supposed to come out long before 2007

The view of "productivity and efficiency should always come first" is undoubtedly true, but it also killed cool looking desktops. Look at anybody who uses windows 11 and all of their setups look the exact same. It sucks.

Now there's only 3 options for smartphones and they all look the same
