i am done tinkering with my phone. a few days ago, i needed to call an emergency number (think 911, but another country), and my phone would just straight up refuse to dial the number, giving an error along the lines of "could not forward call".
thankfully, i was able to use somebody else's phone in that moment.

needless to say, if i cant call emergency in case of emergency, having my phone on me is much more useless.

yes, i tinkered with it. i had some lineage gsi on it since a few years, installed microg, used a foss dialer app etc etc.

the worst part is: i cannot call the emergency number to test if it is working.

i considered buying one of these tiny ass phones that only do calls, to have on me just for emergencies. but then again having to charge another device and keep it on me is too much of a hassle.

so i decided to go back to stock android. i bought the newest version of my phone (the aforementioned phone being a jelly 2, now bought the jelly star which got android 16 just now) and will just use it as is. play services and everything.

it doesnt feel good. not at all. and already i am thinking about removing play services from the stock rom to make it as google free as possible

but then again, can i be sure 911 etc will work if it comes to it??

thanks for reading my blog post.

>tl;dr op could not dial 911 on custom rom and will stop tinkering with his android
>inb4 op is a glowie trying to keep people from freeing their phone from bugs
>>
You do realize you can call 911 to test right? You just have to say "this is not an emergency" and I explain what you're doing
>>

>>108341385
same is true for the euro equivalent 112.
>>
>>108341399
would get you arrested in my country
even calling the non-emergency number would do that
>>
>>108341385
that's a cool story, but I will keep using my custom rom phone. I know, I know, haha, but I will just keep using my custom rom phone.
>>
>>108341399
well, that is not the case here (germany).
from what i understand, 112 would have worked, while 110 didnt work, because 112 is routed fundamentally different. but alas, no way to test it, because you are not allowed to call either emergency number if there is no emergency.
>>108341411
i am not sure about the situation here, but it will be a hefty fine for sure
>>
>>108341468
that is bs, I called the fuckers multiple times by accident and nothing came of it, I hung up the moment I realized what happened.
>>
>>108341411
Just say you accidentally pressed the emergency call button.

unironically, tinkering with phones is a thing that non-adults do
if you're an adult phone needs to just werk
also who the fuck is tinkering with phones in 2026, they're the most boring devices imaginable
>>
>>108341516
it's okay, Bernd. When in doubt I would actually ask for legal advice but no it is not that serious
>>108341574
Frankly, people who want an uncucked phone usually try to buy their way out of it instead. But that's the approach you usually take as you grow older. In my 20s I DIYd more.

holy christmas, how old are you guys? Are you serious older than 29? The fuck is wrong with you? Go get some ladies preggo and love them dearly

If you still carry around a smart phone all the time you are a mega mongoloid. These are not smart phones they are mega mongoloid phones.

These anons are trying to get you arrested. The actual way you're supposed to test emergency call functionality is to call the non-emergency number ahead of time and schedule an emergency call test.
Or you can stop fucking with jeetware and just get a Pixel already. Your choice.
>>
>>108343331
Pixels are notorious for failing to call 911. If you want network reliability get a Motorola, iPhone or Samsung.

>Pikachu face "Some thinks dont work!!!! OMG"
If you want your shit to work use some official build and a good os like Grapheneos. Thinker with pcs not phones since they are less critical to your life unlike a phone
>>
>>108344168
you are so damn right. op here. thanks for the input. just thinking about how the situation might have ended hadnt i been able to use another persons phone gives me chills. as stated in op, i am done. phone arrived today and i will not do jack shit with it.
also sage in all fields since this thread does not need the bump imo

My wife s son called 112 2 times. First time i ve heard someone speaking on the phone picked it up from his hand saw the emg number and just explained to the operator that the kid was playing with the phone and called by mistake and there is no emergency
2nd time he called panicked when he heard the operator speaking and hang up. Operator called back, i ve picked up the phone and explained the situation and that there is no emergency.
Nothing happened.

I had the same issues with custom ROMs, GrapheneOS, FOSS apps, and similar hobbyist dogshit. Getting Android to be useful as a modern smartphone while being private and secure is near impossible. Just switch to an iPhone. Apple is not perfect, but if you've already bitten the bullet by going stock, the iPhone is a MUCH better choice.

>the worst part is: i cannot call the emergency number to test if it is working.
that's illegal, retard.
guess why you cannot dial emergency numbers without a working (e)sim
>>
>>108341385
I've seen this pasta at least twice before
>>
>>108345140
Your stepson sounds like he needs an actual punishment for doing it twice, but I understand you may but be in a position to control that.
>>
>>108341385
Yes, never install jeeted custom ROMs.
If you dive a bit into the ecosystem it's actually fairly easy to make your own custom ROM out of a stock ROM.
It's what I did on my Samsung, completely debloated and removed samshit crap, great battery (on a phone that has a small battery), inserted a custom hosts file right into /etc/ so things I don't want are blocked without shitty ad blockers. Outside of that it's stock, no need for root, play store can be disabled/enabled as needed, all banking apps work.
>>
>>108345487
i phrased that badly. what i was trying to say: i have no way of confirming whether it is working now sincw i cannot (for legal reasons!) make a test call to the emergency number
>>
>>108345767
it's kinda easy to get stuff to boot, but making it stable is actually a lot of work.
>>
>>108345824
why not?

I bought a used S23 Ultra in 2024 and it was the best choice I ever made. Before I had a shitty Poco X3 Pro that had to be flashed to be debloated (50 GB extra freed) with terrible ghost touch and the battery died after just two years while being new.

The only issue the Samsung has is being 256 GB. That was the compromise I had to make, but it was probalby better than going S22U.

Its also lovely to see frequent updates on the stock manufacturers firmware but its a highend phone. Buying them used after the next one came seems the best way, there won't be a meaningful upgrade anyway for at least half a decade until a new camera sensor arrives. Or double battery life. The current phones seem to be a downgrade and offer nothing better.

Definitely not get Poco they are cheap for a reason. Custom ROMs are great for old devices. I could flash my Nexus 7 2012 to Android 7, but the device has the NAND issue and is therefore nearly unsuable (and 8 GB). But on some mid 2010s phone with 3 or 4 GB you could get some decent experience with a newer Android.
