how i can get rid of distro hopping? i stayed in arch (btw) but i felt incomplete
>>
Arch cured my distro hopping. it was everything i wanted. a bare bones system that you can build up as you go with a simple install (archinstall) that gives you more control over any other.

other distros that are barebones don't have an installer that is as simple and easy as archinstall. distros that have simple installers are all GUI-based that come with a lot of shit you don't want by default like mint.

how can you feel incomplete with arch? it has the most documentation and you can install literally whatever you want with 1 command. you are just a retarded tranny and that deep saddness you feel isnt because of arch

Install distrobox or virt-manager and run containers or vms of other distros instead of wiping out your actual system to satisfy your need to seek out "the next best thing" even though you know deep down in your heart that the only difference between distros is pre-installed software packages and what command you use to install the software.

I don't understand distro hopping. Just use your computer bro stop overthinking things. At work I use ubuntu, it's what came on my dell dev tower. At home I use mint, chose it on a whim with little thought. At my old work, centos, the customers were all on redhat. I don't rice the desktop environment. I don't use a TWM. Computer is fine.

Actually make a list of everything you want in a distro. Then find the small list of distros that meet most/all of the requirements. Then make a choice and stick with it, until something actually adds additional features that meet your needs better.
Then just be happy that you made the best choice for yourself.
If you still want to switch after, then you know that you're doing it for some other reason than suiting your use case.

I think its a symptom of too much free time, I used to distrohop and be obsessively partictular about my setup until I got a job

>how i can get rid of distro hopping? i stayed in arch (btw) but i felt incomplete
You have to stop thinking. Arch is probably the most complete distro. But if you think about it long enough, you can make even arch sound bad, here I'll share my thought process:
>Fuck, it's rolling release, it COULD break.
>Damn, no official 3rd party niggas support Arch, they only offer a .deb or .rpm
>Security? I can't be bothered to deal with SELinux myself.
>AUR is convenient, but fuck, what about the malware?

Honestly, you can do this for every fucking distro, there is no perfect distro, but I feel like if you are sticking with mainstream shit, you are fine
>Arch
>Debian
>Fedora
(maby openSUSE and ubuntu) but yeah, don't stress it nigga, just stay on your distro, especially if everything works.
>>
>>108342445
this arch also cured my distro hopping. i like how bloat it is like if you get a package it comes with all of the required libraries so you arent installing package then trying to build thing that requires that package getting failures then having to install package-dev. you just install once and get everything you need. also because of the aur you hardly ever have to manually build stuff from github etc because there will be package builds available its just the most simple distro

Do your research and pick a distro based-on your use case. Use VM's or live CD's to experiment with and evaluate the viability of different distros before committing to an installation.

The only thing stopping me is that Tumbleweed makes it very easy to have a system of updates that I cannot achieve anywhere else. Well unless I'm alright with immutable distros, which I'm not.

you distro hop because you don't have a clear idea about what you want to accomplish

I want stability. everything else is secondary. therefore I use Debian stable, and I have a few flatpaks for programs I think may need to be more up to date

if you want performance, gentoo is the obviousl choice, but requires that you know what you are doing to get that performance

if you want broad compatibility and a relatively well assured experience, *buntu or fedora are probably a good choice.

but you get into the weeds when you start to prioritize schitzoid objectives like gaymen.
you're going to end up trying arch, or any gaymen focused flavor of the month such as bazzite, nobara, cachyos, etc. those are all cancer.

stick with one of the big 3 distros: *buntu, fedora, or debian. anything else is just going to be a waste of time.
>>
>>108349613
>if you want performance, gentoo is the obviousl choice
It really isn't, and I'm posting from gentoo right now. Any speed gain you get from self-compiling is placebo at best, and is gonna be offset by the time you spend fucking around with use flags and waiting around for shit to compile.
>>
For me, it's Arch and KDE, the only distro and de that are stable, have a bunch of contributors, corporate and volunteer, and a GUI toolkit that works on ever OS right out of the box, Qt.

definitely takes time to learn what works and how to do things
but you do get that back once you are fully dialed in
and as for compile times, we all have to sleep and most modern CPUs can get firefox compiled overnight or faster.

I will say that a lot of people have schitzoid approach to gentoo and end up not liking it because of those bad approach

the kernel should be compiled as tight an monolithic as possible. modules are slow and your hardware isn't so vast that you need a module for everything. tighten that shit up.
>>
>>108349676
Has anyone actually done any benchmarking on this? I really can't imagine the difference between a minimal binary based linux distro and even a highly stripped down gentoo is that noticeable.
And again I'm not against gentoo, I've daily'd it for a few years now. But I acknowledge that it's because I like tinkering with shit, not because it's more efficient.

>and as for compile times, we all have to sleep and most modern CPUs can get firefox compiled overnight or faster.
Sure, that's what I do for updates, but sometimes you wanna install some new program and you realize that it's gonna take like 4 hours because it wants to pull in some shit like qtwebengine and your use flags don't match any of the binary builds for it.

if you really want something now, nothing is stopping you from getting a flatpak or appimage
probably a better way to test before committing to an emerge
>>
>>108349939
That is also what I end up doing, but at that point there really isn't any good claim for a speedup. I'm just really skeptical that on modern hardware you're gonna get much of a noticeable difference of performance. Maybe if you're using an old IBM thinkpad or something
>>
i just use debian on everything
what's the use case for distro hopping?
>>
>>108342389
>how i can get rid of distro hopping?
Windows11 Pro, then actually use your computer for getting this done, rather than living inside your OS.
>>
>>108342389
My honest to god Nigga, let me tell you something: All Linux distros have quirks. All linux distros break from time to time. All linux distros will give you a similar experience.
That being said, install Ubuntu and forget about everything else. That's literally it. Whenever you think you're missing out with other distros, remember what I said earlier, stick to Ubuntu. Make Ubuntu do what you want (cause you can), modify the shit out of it. Really use it and you'll discover you where not missing on anything.
Ubuntu is the answer. It IS the most corpo distro there is, but remember, Ubuntu LTS is OBLIGATED to work, because Canonical's clients depend on it. That's more than 99% of distros can say.
So repeat after me: Ubuntu!
Now get the fuck out.
