Considering a computer was like $1,000+ expense back in the day, she was pretty well-off to afford that at all.
A desktop (or laptop even) that'll last you more than a decade has never been cheaper than it is now. (yes, even during this RAM and GPU crisis)

Yeah but it's 2026 with a cost of living crisis and they can't even afford a house anymore yet alone gimmick technologies as middle-class has been nuked off the radar into poor class

They're taking away our circus.

i've never understood why my parents dropped $2,000 on a family pc back in 1999. they may have gotten it a bit cheaper since they got it through my mum's work in some way. my mum never used it as far as i remember, and my dad just played a couple of games on it. this was the peak of the dot com boom era so getting a computer was the big thing to get, but still, my parents were never rich so it was a very surprising and unusual purchase. like to give an idea i had to buy my own games and consoles for the most part, we had pay tv for like 3 months before they stopped paying for it, first new console i got was a ps2 in 2004 once the cheaper slim model came out and even as a christmas present i still offered to pay for some of it. granted i'm sure they figured i could do homework and learn things on the computer/internet versus a game console. point is i wasn't the kid who got each new gadget when they came out. thankfully for me they didn't stop paying for the internet, they probably figured i and my sister used it too much to stop, though we did keep dial up until 2006 since as it was something they didn't really use, they didn't feel the need for anything better.
thanks for reading my blog

these days a computer isn't what i'd call an expense, one could pick up a full second hand desktop or laptop perfectly capable of running new software for <$100

My parents did that, and I was a little shit and nagged them to get a new one every 18 months too because the existing one was out of date. Meanwhile my kids are using the same £100 android tablets the last 6 years.

thats like saying ''muh grandparents got the TV when everyone started getting TVs.. and i dont understand why''

its one of those things, like washing machine, a stereo, a TV.. why would they wanna miss out on owning that?

I paid for it after I creampied your dad

the difference is that they had no use for it themselves. and while sure getting popular thing because it's popular thing is pretty normal, that's not enough of a reason by itself considering how expensive it was. again we weren't rich. the house i grew up in was made in the late '50s, complete with external wood fired heater for hot water. my parents drove cars from the '80s (my dad upgraded to a second hand one from '96 later, but when i left home in 2010 my mum was still using that '80s car), etc. not to sound like i'm complaining or anything, i enjoyed going with my mum to garage sales and flea markets, they're where i picked up all my early computer parts and stuff (i had a room full of old computer parts before the family computer)

There is saying
>It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it
Computers were pretty amazing at the time and people were sold the idea that they would replace everything

same, I remember my parents taking money from my piggy bank to buy smokes and hocking the TV to make rent and never owning anything better than a second hand magna. But somehow they were able to afford a PC. I guess I am thankful it is the one luxury we did have because it forced me to have to wring every drop of entertainment I could out of it, and now I am a professional computer autist
