problem is how do you know when it's corrupted? do you listen to each song, view each photo, and watch each movie before you back them up?
if silent corruption happens, you may just end up backing up a corrupted copy, and now you have two corrupted copies.
it's not that unusual, just a few months ago i backed up a friends' hdd to transfer to an ssd as we built him a new computer. because this was ntfs, it has no mechanism to detect corrupted files, so the backup and restore completed without any complaints... but several games still didn't work properly, not until i ran steam verification on them and it replaced several corrupted files (as steam compares file checksums with what they should be). there was nothing wrong with the new ssd, the files were already corrupted from sitting on an old hdd.
if you care about files you at least keep a checksum list for them (like an .sfv file) if not a checksumming filesystem, so you can check file integrity before backing them up or restoring them (wouldn't have helped in my case because the files were already corrupted before i got them, you generate an sfv when they're new). even better if you don't (want to) use raid, generate par files for them, too, so you can fix minor errors should they happen

So local IPs start with 192.168, right? When trying out nmap to find my router web UI address (scanning the entire range) I found a lot of addresses in the 192.168.20s range. Mostly 22 and 23. Lots of 71 too. The router is supposed to be on 192.168.1.100 but there's nothing in that 1 range.
Two questions, first is all of those IPs I'm seeing, what's up with all of them? There's only two devices currently up on this network (that I know of), plus the router itself. There's like maybe a hundred I'm finding with nmap.
Second question is I ain't about to try out all of those hundred or so IPs to try end find which one, if any, is the one for the router. What else can I try? The IP written on label isn't it and all the resources I can find on the internet point to that same IP, which doesn't up, it isn't found on nmap.
The command I'm running is "sudo nmap -sn 192.168.*.*"

what your devices have is either up to the device (if it's configured statically) or up to your DHCP server (which is a program running on your router), in many cases you can configure the DHCP server on the router, so you can have a look at that to see how it's set up.
if you don't know your router's ip but it's working in the sense that you're still getting an internet connection through it, check the default gateway address on the computer you're using, that should be your router's address

I'm having some really weird input issues. It started playing mechwarrior 5, pressing f1 didn't do anything, which is bad because f1 f1 is how you say "everybody go kill this guy". I tested my keyboard and f1 seemed to be working fine. Then I played a few RTS games and using lctrl +2 to bind units to 2 didn't do anything. rctrl +2 worked, lctrl plus 1 or three worked, but lctrl 2 didn't and I have no idea why. This is consistent across several games. My mouse wheel is erratic, sometimes it does nothing, sometimes it zooms in the wrong direction, sometimes it works.

When I'm on the browser "brave help center" has been popping up lately, it did a few times when I was writing this, including when I hit backspace, but it seems to have cleared up for now.

I have no idea what's going on, feels like shit's haunted.

I've been having other problems with my computer, it's been having a graphical crash lately when I play mostly modern games (little squares in diagonal lines from bottom left to top right appear) that I've been meaning to fix, could it be connected to that? My computer is also just kind of an obsolete shitpiece in general, I have cash for a new one, but I've been waiting for the steam machine, so I'm just trying to get it to last a few more months.

I use a high end PC that has windows 11 (it was gifted to me) and for some reason when I click "save image as", it can sometimes take 3-6 seconds for the file directory to pop up and allow me to select where it goes. Usually, when I try to save the image again right after, it's much quicker and almost pops up as fast as I expect it to. What could be causing this?

I have an external HDD connected to my computer if that changes anything. Could it be that my PC is waking up my HDD every time I go to save an image?

yes, that's exactly what it's doing. the device is put into a low power state after being idle long enough until it's actually needed. you can disable this behavior under advanced power plan settings (there's a setting for turning hard drives off after x minutes with 0 being infinite and there's a separate setting that controls usb devices being put to sleep when they're believed idle) but it's global so i wouldn't. i'm not aware of a way to do it per-device.

How do I reference a file with Japanese characters in either the filename or one of the folders in the address when writing .cmd or .bat files? Notepad++ says it's utf-8. I've just had a thought on what could be the issue. Some more context on what I'm trying to do is randomise a folder icon from a set of icons I have made by changing the contents of the desktop.ini file that contains the name and location of the icon. I'm using a program called inifile (https://www.horstmuc.de/wbat32.htm#inifile) and in one of the help files it states that CMD can't handle UTF-8 so I guess it can't be done this way.

i don't use windows these days, but i can't say i'm very surprised. windows's cmd is very much stuck in the past.
but windows's past is also pretty interesting, windows supported unicode quite early on, so it's not that they didn't support unicode, rather they supported unicode a bit /too/ early, early enough that while the rest of computing settled on utf-8, windows settled on ucs-2 and later utf-16.

information about the empty folder is stored in the Master File Table, a "secret" file located at x:\$mft
an empty folder will take 1 KiB (or maybe it was 1 KB) of space so you will need a lot of them. the good news is that $mft never shrinks so even if you delete the folders later the disk will still be full.
though you will be able to create millions upon millions of text files less than ~950 bytes. if file data (and path/last modified etc) fits inside the $mft record the file itself will show up as taking 0 bytes (under "size on disk")

Yep, I had a feeling it could be the case. The brand new gaming laptops seemed suspiciously cheap for the capabilities they offer.
I will be going for ThinkPad (or maybe Dell Precision, but I need more opinions on it) with older professional GPU, most possibly the display units for peace of mind as I want it to last years. Question is how much should I spend. Something with Quadro RTX3000(or at very least T2000) and 32GB RAM would be optimal, but I'm really pushing past the budget with going for 1TB SSD(I'm currently still running with Sata III, so I don't have nothing to upgrade with, unless it's possible to still make them count as legit for program installation when connected to USB.

I am starting my first semester of college this fall for a non-CS STEM degree. I have the option between Java, C++, or Assembly as a support course. I already have some experience in C/C++ and have written some pretty basic game engines and random ESP32 projects. Do you think it would still be worth it to take the C++ course, or should I just go with ASM since it's what I have less knowledge of?

If younwre good at being self driven, anything you can learn in a class you can also learn on your own. Yeah, but I want all-in-one deal without screwing around with cables. If my Acer Aspire E5 575G managed to survive about a decade with just (recent) battery and fan replacement, then professional-tier laptops should, too.

I already tried using browsers as image viewers but they will mangle the order of, say, manga pages if you open multiple at once and also take up an exorbitant amount of ram for some reason (even though viewing 100 tabs online won't have the same issues, a mere 30 of my locally saved images causes ram usage so high it leads to blue screen).

I also tried Sumatra PDF, but tabs will continuously shrink until they're too tiny to properly switch between.

sure, any specific laptop might last a very long time and you might get unlucky with a desktop and have something irreplaceable die in a month. that's the way probabilities work; what i'm saying is that with a laptop, the probability that something dies earlier is much higher because you have more parts with typically more limited lifespans.

but if you have a distinct need for a laptop then go with a laptop, i just wanted to make sure you had considered other options and understand that a laptop is more likely to die early, even a good one.
