>>108354630>If you care about the data then it will have two copies (offline backup being one).problem is how do you know when it's corrupted? do you listen to each song, view each photo, and watch each movie before you back them up?if silent corruption happens, you may just end up backing up a corrupted copy, and now you have two corrupted copies.it's not that unusual, just a few months ago i backed up a friends' hdd to transfer to an ssd as we built him a new computer. because this was ntfs, it has no mechanism to detect corrupted files, so the backup and restore completed without any complaints... but several games still didn't work properly, not until i ran steam verification on them and it replaced several corrupted files (as steam compares file checksums with what they should be). there was nothing wrong with the new ssd, the files were already corrupted from sitting on an old hdd.if you care about files you at least keep a checksum list for them (like an .sfv file) if not a checksumming filesystem, so you can check file integrity before backing them up or restoring them (wouldn't have helped in my case because the files were already corrupted before i got them, you generate an sfv when they're new). even better if you don't (want to) use raid, generate par files for them, too, so you can fix minor errors should they happen

So local IPs start with 192.168, right? When trying out nmap to find my router web UI address (scanning the entire range) I found a lot of addresses in the 192.168.20s range. Mostly 22 and 23. Lots of 71 too. The router is supposed to be on 192.168.1.100 but there's nothing in that 1 range. Two questions, first is all of those IPs I'm seeing, what's up with all of them? There's only two devices currently up on this network (that I know of), plus the router itself. There's like maybe a hundred I'm finding with nmap.Second question is I ain't about to try out all of those hundred or so IPs to try end find which one, if any, is the one for the router. What else can I try? The IP written on label isn't it and all the resources I can find on the internet point to that same IP, which doesn't up, it isn't found on nmap. The command I'm running is "sudo nmap -sn 192.168.*.*"
>>108360940there's a few, but yes anything beginning with 192.168 is a local/lan address, not routable over the internethttps://www.meridianoutpost.com/resources/articles/IP-classes.phpwhat your devices have is either up to the device (if it's configured statically) or up to your DHCP server (which is a program running on your router), in many cases you can configure the DHCP server on the router, so you can have a look at that to see how it's set up.if you don't know your router's ip but it's working in the sense that you're still getting an internet connection through it, check the default gateway address on the computer you're using, that should be your router's address

What's a good scanner program that works with most or all scanner types? I tested my keyboard and f1 seemed to be working fine. Then I played a few RTS games and using lctrl +2 to bind units to 2 didn't do anything. rctrl +2 worked, lctrl plus 1 or three worked, but lctrl 2 didn't and I have no idea why. This is consistent across several games. My mouse wheel is erratic, sometimes it does nothing, sometimes it zooms in the wrong direction, sometimes it works. When I'm on the browser "brave help center" has been popping up lately, it did a few times when I was writing this, including when I hit backspace, but it seems to have cleared up for now.I have no idea what's going on, feels like shit's haunted.I've been having other problems with my computer, it's been having a graphical crash lately when I play mostly modern games (little squares in diagonal lines from bottom left to top right appear) that I've been meaning to fix, could it be connected to that? My computer is also just kind of an obsolete shitpiece in general, I have cash for a new one, but I've been waiting for the steam machine, so I'm just trying to get it to last a few more months.

You got a good enough job so you rate well, but your subcounscious got the message that you are likely to recommend it to people. Even if it wouldn't work, that's why they do it. I want to try out a vertical for this, but if trackballs are superior for wrist comfort then I'd be way more willing to try those out instead, in which case I'd likely go for a finger trackball, which from my research seems to be a safer bet than a thumb one.

>>108365656>I have an external HDD connected to my computer if that changes anything. Could it be that my PC is waking up my HDD every time I go to save an image?yes, that's exactly what it's doing. the device is put into a low power state after being idle long enough until it's actually needed. you can disable this behavior under advanced power plan settings (there's a setting for turning hard drives off after x minutes with 0 being infinite and there's a separate setting that controls usb devices being put to sleep when they're believed idle) but it's global so i wouldn't. i'm not aware of a way to do it per-device.

I'm using a program called inifile (https://www.horstmuc.de/wbat32.htm#inifile) and in one of the help files it states that CMD can't handle UTF-8 so I guess it can't be done this way.>>108368910I'll look into that, seems like that might cause it's own issues but it might be the only way to do it.
>>108369440>CMD can't handle UTF-8 so I guess it can't be done this way.i don't use windows these days, but i can't say i'm very surprised. windows's cmd is very much stuck in the past.but windows's past is also pretty interesting, windows supported unicode quite early on, so it's not that they didn't support unicode, rather they supported unicode a bit /too/ early, early enough that while the rest of computing settled on utf-8, windows settled on ucs-2 and later utf-16.
>>108369440>>108369458excuse my wording, i'm a bit drunk.what i'm trying to say is that windows started using unicode so early that they used a standard which quickly fell out of favour elsewhere and they're stuck with it. there's a chance cmd understands ucs-2/utf-16 but not the current standard utf-8

I have 5g home internet and use ethernet from the gateway to my pc. It helps with PL and jitter but I still get some PL.Is there anyway at all I can help alleviate this problem? A new gateway or anything? It's really annoying to play any game with.don't suggest a new isp, 5g is all I can do atm due to living situations

>>108370169the packet loss is probably coming from the connection between the router and the isp since it's 5g. you can confirm this by "ping -t"ing your router and 1.1.1.1 and comparing the results; if there's packet loss to 1.1.1.1 but not your router, you know the issue is upstream and you can't do anything about it.

>>108370268i mean you can give it a shot. some vpns have a trial or a free variant with limited data, i don't use vpns so i couldn't give guidance.if you know the hostname or ip address of the server you can tracert it and ping -t every hop to see specifically where the packet loss begins. if it's the final two hops then it's an issue on their end and you can't fix it. if it's somewhere in between, vpn might possibly help.
>>108370268There's always Cloudflare Warp or whatever they call it now. They have a free VPN thing for this specific purpose. If you run a traceroute to your game server you can ping each hop and find the source of the packet loss. If it's in your ISP's network you can complain to them about it and they'll probably fix it.

My ISP was allowed literally earlier this week with no problems. Now it's getting blocked. Check any of the ghost archive boards and they are flooded with posts with people who are also blocked. >>108382717That's not what I'm talking about, do you know about dictionaries?
>>108382743Is an abstraction over 2d arrays but with its own syntax because python is dumb like that, you should not be learning python in this day and age.
>have jpg to png extension on chromium for a while>it works fine>wake up today and chromium has randomly flagged it as malwareSo what's up with that? False positive or did it recently get a bad update?
Retard here. Can someone explain what the difference is? Is the standard mikupad.html not completely local?
>>108382859>jpg to png extensionI meant the extension "Save as Image Type", apparently it was engaged in stealing affiliate link money, luckily I never bought anything online through this computer.https://www.androidauthority.com/favorite-chrome-image-extension-malware-3649252/Now I need a webp to jpg/png converter...
>>108382877Pretty sure Mikupad is local but maybe they mean "fully offline" as in "won't receive automatic updates" but it still will be a browser based web app that is local. When in doubt, just compile yourself, though I must warn you that Javascript (ReactJS) has always had shit security.
>>108381704afaik it's just a different release schedule. current nvidia drivers are buggy so get 591.86 for now, last unfucked version from januaryish
>>108381986nta but he's right, the "best thing" is going to change depending on what you're using it for. some use cases will want to optimize for efficiency and battery life, some will want to optimize for a powerful gpu, and some more niche use cases may want to optimize for other things. think about what you're going to do with it and that will inform what "best" is.

>>108382879>stealing affiliate link moneyit wouldn't really affect you anyway, you're not the target of that scam. affiliate links are little bits of tracking added to urls to tell them that e.g. some tech youtuber linked you to the page and they get a small share of the revenue if you buy something. affiliate link scammers override that and replace the cookie it generates with their own so that they get the revenue instead. the only negative effect you'd experience is the knowledge that a fraction of your purchase went to a scammer instead of bob's hot thermal paste bukake.

Newpipe is fucked, Invidious is fucked, is there truly a way for me to watch age restricted content from YouTube without actually logging in and going through it or ReVanced? I still need to learn about yt databases and download videos, do those at least get through age restrictions?

I am starting my first semester of college this fall for a non-CS STEM degree. I have the option between Java, C++, or Assembly as a support course. I already have some experience in C/C++ and have written some pretty basic game engines and random ESP32 projects. Do you think it would still be worth it to take the C++ course, or should I just go with ASM since it's what I have less knowledge of?
>>108377069justwatch.com is the only one that lists my country so thats the one I use
>>108384279>non-CS STEM degree>requiring programmingunless by non-CS you mean something like computer engineering, this is a dumb forced requirement so just go with C++ since you already have experience in it. programming is only useful in fields that actually require it, requiring programming as a general ed for STEM is fucking dumb.
never used linux in my lifewhat's the deal with this Cachy OS?is it really that good or what
>>108384308it's preconfigured arch
>>108384308no, it's not
>>108384302I'm majoring in mathematics. It's not a required course, it's just an elective that is supposed to help with your future courses. The other options were things like general chemistry and general astronomy so I figured why not.
>>108384373in that case i'd say just go for whatever sounds the most fun and interesting to you.
>>108384373Another anon here, also consider how easy these electives are for your GPA and your weekly study/work time. If younwre good at being self driven, anything you can learn in a class you can also learn on your own. If you need a fire under your ass and additional motivational to do something you want to and to fight sloth, community college classes are good, but otherwise go torrent a textbook or some humblebundle'd class.
It's me again.I was thinking of getting an post-display Thinkpad with RTX 3000Laptop Lenovo 15 Workstation ThinkPad P15 g1 i7 32GB RAM SSD 1TB RTX3000Intel® Core™ i7-10850H$1049,30He told me he would allow me insert more SSD during warranty if I let him know first. I suppose it's the same with RAM., but then I got info from another seller that their Dell Precision 7560 | 16 x 4,8 GHz |32GB | 1TB |Nvidia RTX |W11 Intel® Core i7-11850Hcomes with A3000 if I'm willing to overlook few scratches on it and a keyboard with stickers$937,08Thoughts?I'm looking for something that will last me good few years, so longevity would be nice.I'm going to omit the fact I can ask the Thinpad guy to install Windows 10, I should be able to do it myself in pinch, after all.
>>108384505the specs are fairly similar. not sure which gpu is better since they're both meme gpus. the dell's cpu is very slightly newer, but it was an optimization generation so it's basically nothing.>longevity would be niceunironically you'd be better off with a desktop then. more things can go wrong with a laptop and they have a shorter lifespan than a typical desktop. if you just need something small, you could consider a mini-pc, like a NUC. you should only go with a laptop if you need it to be portable and readily usable on the go.
I need to restore Windows 11 from zero without anything since my installation is funky.Windows 11 is a fact. It will happen, but there are versions like the 23H2 that aren't as bad.where do I get a trustworthy 23H2 version? I tried the UUP Dump thingy, but I can't start downloading it because my PC says the image belongs to another machine (paraphrasing something similar said in my language)
>>108384595use MVS bot on the MAS discord server, that's how i got mine. https://massgrave.dev/windows_11_links go to "other versions" and it's the first link.
>>108384605do I really need to use Discord...?
>>108384634there are other links under the "other versions" section but i had the most luck with MVS bot
>>108384584>not sure which gpu is betterA3000, apparently by fairly big margin>unironically you'd be better off with a desktop then. more things can go wrong with a laptop and they have a shorter lifespan than a typical desktop. Yeah, but I want all-in-one deal without screwing around with cables. If my Acer Aspire E5 575G managed to survive about a decade with just (recent) battery and fan replacement, then professional-tier laptops should, too.Oh, part replacement is a concern, too. It seems I might end up having to rely on Aliexpress.
I want an image viewer program that>can open webp and gif alongside the usual formats>opens multiple images selected at once in the correct order, so pages 1-10 will order 1-10>has tabs that stay a consistent size but can be scrolled, like Firefox, allowing for many images open at once>allows for a ton of images open at once I already tried using browsers as image viewers but they will mangle the order of, say, manga pages if you open multiple at once and also take up an exorbitant amount of ram for some reason (even though viewing 100 tabs online won't have the same issues, a mere 30 of my locally saved images causes ram usage so high it leads to blue screen).I also tried Sumatra PDF, but tabs will continuously shrink until they're too tiny to properly switch between.
>>108384718if the a3000 is the better gpu then i'd go with that, especially with the slightly newer cpu. 10th to 11th gen isn't a big deal but it is a point in the dell's favor, plus the laptop is cheaper. installing windows shouldn't be a factor, it's fairly simple these days.>If my Acer Aspire E5 575G managed to survive about a decade with just (recent) battery and fan replacement, then professional-tier laptops should, too.sure, any specific laptop might last a very long time and you might get unlucky with a desktop and have something irreplaceable die in a month. that's the way probabilities work; what i'm saying is that with a laptop, the probability that something dies earlier is much higher because you have more parts with typically more limited lifespans.but if you have a distinct need for a laptop then go with a laptop, i just wanted to make sure you had considered other options and understand that a laptop is more likely to die early, even a good one.
>>108358699I got a macbook for free, it's from the latest batch of macbooks with Intel processors, it has an i7 from that era and 32gb of RAM.Can I install linux on it? Is it 100% usable? Cause I remember you could "install linux" on a Chromebook but it was more like softmodding a console with custom firmware, you had to do weird shit and it wasn't 100% truly a linux install running perfectly. Can I put like Debian on my macbook and completely get rid of MacOS and use it as a normal laptop? I don't care if the touch bar doesn't work or stuff like that, I just need to be able to type and use the trackpad to write autistic stuff and maybe watch some movies on mpv
>>108384640the third one seemed to work. Thanks!
>>108384800np, glad it helped
>>108384738I'm leaning towards Dell for now, but I heard Thinkpads are pretty much the tankiest out there and there seems to be a better chance to get a replacement fan. It's a miracle I actually found battery and a fan for Acer Aspire. Maybe there will be higher demand for parts in few years?
>>108379564I've owned vps before and I don't like how another person owning another portion of the same server can affect the performance of my server
>>108385242Though shit, all the good dedicated servers are indeed in Europe, consider digitalocean or linode, you can pay a premium for dedicated cores.
>>108384731gwenview although for manga you might want a dedicated reader that keeps track of where you let off.
>>108385071Now I read a Reddit post that said that ThinkPad P53 was the last durable laptop and there are even replacement parts on the same marketplace, so I don't need to scrouge through weird websites or Aliexpress. For a little over half the price of those other laptops. It isn't the strongest stuff, but eeeeh. I will take peace of mind, I guess. There is also Dell Precision 7540 with RTX3000 and Intel Core i7-9850H, at similar price and some crazy screen - UHD 4K, seems like a overkill, might make 1080p blurry, I heard. It's written it has a dent on the back, but if seller says it wasn't used much, I might take it. There is plenty of fans in the marketplace, but no idea if any of those are for RTX3000 one. Both have 512GB SSD, but I will just connect extra SSD externally for games.
If I use the same VPN client and account across multiple devices, can I be traced through simply using that account and connection, even if the VPN is secure and nobody can gleam anything from my use of it?
Where can I get shit like Excel and Word for free from a place that isn‘t shady.
>>108387096LibreOffice if you are looking for "Office at home" that is also compatible with actual Office but its not 100% compatible and you'll have to learn a little bit about saving in specific extensions if you want Office users to be able to open and use it in its intended format.
