I Am Become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds.
>soldered in batteryWhat kind of being would do such evilness
>>108358843
>>108358891Many electronics manufacturers up into the 90sBonus points for arcade cabinets, where it was sometimes part of the copy protection. To discourage tampering (and ensure periodic authorized servicing), if power was lost to specific chips, data or encryption keys would be lost. Often called a suicide battery. The propensity for these batteries to self destruct was well known even then, and well hated.
>>108358843I have to replace a PSP supercapacitor that does the same job and tends to fail the same way. It's smaller size reduces the damage potential but still. If you have a PSP lying around checking for spicy pillows isn't the only thing you should do. Check on these also. Glad even the cheapest POS board has them in a socket or with a connector lead nowadays
>>108359181So not only do the original batteries bloat and explode eventually but the capacitors leak? man...
>>108359224Only the supercapacitor used to keep time. Rest of the device is pretty bullet proof. Other potential failure points are a blown fuse or screen degradation. Pretty damn rare. If your console doesn't keep time when the battery dies or is removed then it's dead and needs replacement. Depending on the motherboard revision it can also cause excessive battery drain. It's worth replacing even if it's not leaking. Not a difficult job if you know how to solder. The part is cheap also. I paid 2 bux for a pack of 5. If you don't know how just get a buddy who knows how to a couple of beers and he'll do it for you. Very easy job.
>>108359224Anything that has liquid in it will most likely either leak at some point or dry out and pop. Electrolyte a shit. A SHIT.
>>108358891It's more that they understood the hardware had a useful lifespan that was much shorter than when the batteries would give people issues.People claim that this is what they do to hardware today, but the reality is that this type of disregard has been going on a century
>>108359294Just replaced ~50 SMD caps to Roland XP-80 main board. Luckily they hadn't leaked yet, but audio output was already degraded and with excessive quantizing noise due to filter caps failing.
>>108359286Oh and on some models it can cause the console to not power on at all. Forgot about that one.
>>108358891This is a known issue for the Philips CDI. Evil and that device go hand in hand so it's no surprise.
>>108358891Microshart. They also put it the only good thing they made aka the OG Xbox where it is by far the №1 cause of failure. Damage is often major and can render the device completely unrepairable.
>>108359405You can remove the clock cap in anything before 1.6.It's the 1.6's that need replacement because they can't run without it. Thanks, Microslop.
>>108358891Before CR2032 batteries became standard, during the 1980s and early 1990s many prebuilt PC compatibles and PC motherboards used soldered batteries (and some used AA batteries lol). Particularly common during the 8086, 80286 and early 80386 years
>>108358891Commodore in this case, since the pic is of an Amiga 500+ Rev 8A board that introduced this fucking thing. On older revisions the RTC battery would be on a trapdoor memory extension card, so the damage would be limited to that card.
>>108358911idgi
>>108359951The same was true for most 486 boards too, except for the very latest ones, which had a footprint for CR2032 holder too, but still usually used Vartas. But at least they had input pins for external battery so you could just clip out the old one and easily use external battery placed somewhere where it couldn't do damage.
>>108358891I was asked to look at a laptop from 2021 with soldered ram of 2 gigs. Asked why it's so slow...Gave them Mint XFCE. Flight is stable.
>>108358843delicious marzipan jar.
>Leaky clock capacitorThis kills the heug Xbox
>>108358843>I Am Become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds.
>>108361592T__T
>we built these solid state electronics that will last forever>good, good, now glue a bunch of miniature chemical bombs to it
>>108363572Fucking HOWEven my shitty laptop that paged 100% of the time got nowhere near that after years of abuse
