Have a normie family member who is just using Windows defender as their live protection along with Malwarebytes for doing a manual scan. I want to recommend a free AV they should use instead because of better heuristics & being harder for malware to disable.
I installed the free version of Avira on my parents computer recently but it has too many annoying popups of random shit like free up space on your PC by deleting these registry entries or these unused files or whatever fucking bullshit. It didn't even detect the EICAR test file.
So which free AV should I recommend they use? one with a live scanner, solid detection rate but not too many false positives all the same and as few obtrusive popups as possible.

I use Avast. It has popups by default, but they can be easily turned off in the settings.

Unironically just use Windows Defender with the user control maxxed out. Unless that family member is downloading executable files constantly for dumb shit or going to shady websites constantly, they don't need anything more than the default shit and a good adblock.

Honestly you could probably make it all easier by setting up an adblock at the router level and prevent them from accessing bad domains.

There aren't any free AVs worth shit, other than MS defender. They will all constantly spam you with ads and promotions.
If that's insufficient, buy something like ESET or Bitdefender. The most basic packages should do.

Man, I miss that era of Avast, genuinely good, entirely supported by enterprise subscribers.

addendum: avast has gone to shit and the beginning of the end was when they bought AVG which was dogshit.
>>
none, just clean install each time you begin having any doubts

Panda free has worked fine for me, it has actually improved system performance in which defender was doing stupid shit and using more resources than it should, it shows popups but can be easily disabled in settings, just untick 2 things and you are ready to go, you can even set a password if you don’t want someone tinkering all the time, that being said your family member is not doing it that bad, windows defender plus malwarebytes scans are a pretty good combo

Ah yes the retard method of fixing things. Thanks \v\!
>>
Windows defender is shit, it only checks for viruses that infect Microsoft products like windows, edge and office. It cant detect cryptominers or rootkits

I've never used an AV in my entire life. I even disable windows defender with dcontrol on every install. You don't need a heuristic scanner if you don't download retarded shit or plug in random USBs from niggers and if someone hits you with some kind of exploit or zero day that doesn't require you to click and run anything on your PC I doubt your shitty free antivirus would save you anyway

Firefox + uBlock Origin w/ all Filterlists enabled + Firefox filtering set to Strict.
If they're on Windows 11 then just enable Windows Defender's Controlled Folder Access, you basically do not own the PC at that point and nothing can be done to alter it as in Malware cannot really do anything.
Best bet is just installing literally any GNU/+Linux Distribution.
>>
>>108359997
There is zero reason to use anything other than windows defender. Everything else is pointless.
>but it's microsoft
Don't care.
>>
>>108359997
I install microsoft security essentials on windows 7 computers. then the patches that allow it to get updates.

if it is windows 10 I just use the default whatever is already on it. it just works, sometimes too well as it blocks programs that are not viruses but microsoft doesn't like.
>>
>>108359997
in the past I tried:
avast
kaspersky
norton
symantec
mcaffee
panda
all of them suck. so now I just use the default AV on windows.
>>
do viruses even exist anymore?
haven't seen one in decades
>>
>>108359997
ironically the best thing I ever used to keep computers from getting viruses was net nanny.

any computer I installed that on NEVER got a virus from the internet.

The best free ones are Kaspersky and Bitdefender.
The bare minimum is Windows Defender.

>>108359997
Windows defender is the best because Ms is the ones pumping out all the shit it's "defending" you from.
I'm serious
>>
>>108359997
AV just read systemcall sequence and classify a process or file as malicious, there is no reason to use any AV at all since nobody use the known methods anymore and those who know to do better things can bypass AV easily
>>
>>108359997
Ah yes, Avast 4. The childhood trauma of seeing that popup in the bottom right, having this window show up and hear the sudden
>WOOP

Nowadays Defender barely makes a fuss when it finds something
>>
>>108364259
except AVs use behaviour monitoring, network monitoring and heuristics now so your post is just 15+ years out of date
>>
>>108359997
anyone recommending anything other than sticking with windows defender is operating on outdated knowledge from 10-20 years ago and they just never did anything different because it worked so they think it's what is best.
>>
>>108359997
none of them are better than current windows defender

Funny story, an uncle asked me to fix their laptop one time because they got a fuckload of viruses. When I checked their browser history to see what they downloaded it was all weird-ass porn sites
>>

I haven't used an Antivirus for 15 years now. Just use common sense.

AVG has sovl and Bitdefender is peak. But idk though since I havent used Windows in years, install Linux.
>>
>>108365630
It was terrifying but also sovful. I remember after school downloading shit from Limewire in a virtual machine with avast free just to hear & see the alerts.
Yes I have autism.
