I have always been fascinated by mission-critical & legacy-related embedded equipment. You know, ATMs/POS systems/industrial computers. The types of devices still running on 386s, maybe even MIPS. Mainly because they use hardware/software that I am far more interested in working with, rather than web development or the very high-level areas where most codemonkeys are involved in nowadays.

Is there something I am missing? To be fair I'm only 20 years old and I'm sure there's a lot of nepotism/connections needed to gain the trust required to work with this stuff, but apparently the Indians aren't really swamping it as much.

Not a lot of jobs from what I've heard. Learning COBOL and Fortran and working for a bank might be more what you're looking for.

It’s not as glamorous as you think

None of this is embedded programing. Most of those are running Windows.

Real embedded requires extensive hardware and electronics knowledge. Do you have that?

just teach it to yourself on the side while pursuing something more career worthy

Keep using windows and get a job in sanitation.

get yourself a stm32 for like two dollars and begin writing non trivial shit for it
that's one of the few ways to be sure
i'm not joking

embedded systems doesnt exist.
miniaturization means that any cost/space argument for NOT using x86/64 disappears.
influx of indians into software means that any argument for NOT using the latest and newest and most bloated buggy garbage is ignored.
last commercial embedded project i did was flashing a light on and off. worked without issue for 10 years. new software lead comes in. why arent you using xyz why is it written in c/asm why arent you using vscode which didnt exist when you started this project using a proprietary compiler that would be a huge waste of time to integrate also the code hasn't changed in a decade who gives a fuck.
embedded is dead its just software now.

fridges don't need any control, but they put full computers into them anyway.
washing machines run on javascript.
its over.

industrial computers is one possibility but (depends on your locale) you might aim for electrical engineering with a software slant rather than the other way round.
other than that its space stuff.

Are you a tranny? Are you an actual man? If you're actual man, get a real job like HVAC or Electrician instead of being a pussy wanting to hide in the AC all day.
AI is replacing you, so play it smart and move on.
It's time you trash zoomers learn to actually work anyway. Maybe if you did, you could buy a house instead of whining about it not being handed to you
