Is it too late... will progress outpace a complete beginner at this stage? Will everything be locked in and everyone locked out in a year or two?

LLMs are plateauing. They can write code, but they can't engineer. We're approaching the best possible state of LLMs which will be 90% of code is initially generated by AI but needs to be reviewed by a human anyways for optimization and de-slopification. So yes there is still is a point in learning to code. Biggest threat to someone learning to code is probably Indians who will work for literal pennies, but that's been the case for the past 25 years
