Still thinking about the Filco 65% with double-shot PBT keycaps, fn layer front legends, a scroll lock indicator, optional alternate keys for R3 control layout (or R3 fn..!), USB pass-through... a keyboard that somehow absolutely nobody wanted. They even left the right column caps blank so that you don't feel as constrained by their layout choices.Cruel hobby.
>>108401632This should be bare minimum for any 65% on the market and it somehow isn't. Nobody bought this keyboard and now it's like 70% off. I hate everyone.

>>108403023>ask Hiney>maybe he'll helpI don't want to make any pessimistic assumptions about the keyboard community, many of whom are no doubt very helpful people. But as someone who has been asked for help by do-nothing dilettantes before I have to admit I don't like it, especially because most of them are going to give up as soon as they realize it's not easy. If you first attempt to learn the basics of making your own circuit board and then approach him as a can-do amateur who is actually trying, has done some stuff, and has targeted specific questions about how to bridge the gap from where he is to making something actually good, Hiney (or whoever) will be far more likely to want to help you, and it's also much more likely that you will be capable of being helpedThese days with LLMs there's really no excuse to pester people to teach you the *basics* (or even to do things for you). If anon is serious he should begin by opening up ChatGPT and asking,>I want to get in to making my first keyboard PCB. But before I start designing and ordering PCBs, I should probably learn how to make electronic circuits, which might also mean learning a thing or two about *electrical* circuits in general. I'm very new to this and I know there are lots of educational tools that people use to learn to make and design circuits. I want to build up to being able to plan a circuit involving a controller with QMK firmware, a switch matrix with diodes, and maybe some LEDs. Where should I begin? Is there any common 'package' of basic materials that is recommended for learning the basics? You should be able to get a very basic "keyboard" functioning from these sorts of materials, and you should be able to plan out what you *think* looks like a correct keyboard PCB in KiCad, before you start pestering people about how to make PCBs. Because then at least you can actually say that you've reached the point where you need their expertise, you don't need to be taught what a diode is etc.
>>108403263No, you can still buy complete keyboards everywhere. Group buys are still for people seeking specific aesthetics, materials, functions, etc.

>>108404259Well yeah and I do a similar thing on my 65% but it would make the keycaps no longer meaningfulThis is the problem with function sublegends... if you can get them to match how you want your layout to be, it feels great. >>108405042>>108405079Looks like several other keyboards that copied the overall shape/look of the Dell AT101 or the "Bigfoot" as some people call them. The lock light symbols/text are different so I don't think it is one, but might still be worth checking out regardless.
>>108405079>>108405313It's Alps. Didn't take it because it's full of sand, maybe I'll return for it later. Missing the cable but that ain't much of an issue.
>>108405019I was under the impression 8000hz is the standard these days compared to the 1000hz of 10 years ago
>>108405374>because it's full of sandYeesh, that could potentially spell the end for the board then. I've seen some people sing praises about the wax "mod" to restore the switches while others had mixed results. Still, for something you can basically get for free it's worth taking a gamble if all you need to do is vacuum/brush it off and clean the rest and put a new cable in.
>>108405425not really I've pulled several keyboards from trash that where full of sand/concrete dust and never had reliability issues it's just so much work to vacuum and clean everything out, they'll work as is but the feel of switch dragging though sand is just horrible. Last two keyboards where relatively modern redragon that I literally pulled out of the gutters, was all twisted and broken but managed to bring it back to life and Cherry foil based but there's a crack somewhere in the traces didn't have time to fix it.

>>108405445This is how I found redragon, that other one idk what that was, it was too far gone, still used couple switches out of it.
>>108405454>get a job niggaNah, not worth it where I live, instead of just being poor I would be poor and tired.
>>108405410It's becoming the standard just like how HE, TMR etc. are because of gaymer marketing autism. It's entirely unnecessary and just another angle companies use to sucker gullible retards into buying overpriced shit.
>>108405445The thing is Alps switches are not as robust as Cherry and its clones in terms of being dust resistant. The internals are much more susceptible to debris and the keys go from being smooth to extremely coarse and bind like a bitch.t. someone who has a couple old Apple boards with Orange Alps that look much less dirty and suck fucking ass to type on.Most modern lubricants can't restore Alps switches to anywhere close to stock/good condition, which is why some people gamble on the wax mod stuff.Again, worth the gamble since it's pretty much free. I've seen some people luck out on Alps boards that looked nasty and all that was needed was a good vacuum/brush and wipe down.
Is this Adafruit 1597 the real deal or is it just a clone of the Engineer SS-03? I gotta decide in the next 20 minutes if I want it tomorrow over some 50-85 PLN Techrebal kit to desolder every switch and LED on my original K95. Getting this would balloon into costing more than a full set of premium switches and keycaps but everyone in the west suggests Engineers, Hakko's and Edysyn hand pumps and this is the only keyboard of this type I have so I really want to make sure it can handle 2 hours of desoldering 440+ joints compared to spending $26 on a kit with a cheap ZD-190 desolder pump that costs like 2 dollars. So the question is whether I really need this for just one job given it eats into about half of our monthly pension to include that Engineer pump.
>>108405545>Engineer SS-03lol 25€, it looks like scam aimed at redditors. You can get proper vacuum desolderer from aliexpress for like 40€.I use some random cheap one and it works for me, just remember to first add some fresh solder to every joint before sucking it off.440 joints tho, that's mad, I thought I had it bad having to resolder 40 pin ide cable.
>>108405582>lol 25€, it looks like scam aimed at redditors. How so? Conventional wisdom has it to stick with hand operated pumps like the Hakko 20g, Edsyn Soldapullt, or Engineer SS-02/03. >You can get proper vacuum desolderer from aliexpress for like 40€.Usecase? I assume this means gas powered?>440 jointsTwo per switch, so 220 for the keyboard and another 36 for the G-Keys, double that again for the two per LEDs so 548 for the entire board. That's why I was uncertain whether these basic soldering kit desolder pumps would break or not because this board will no doubt require me to add some fresh solder to every joint, so it might need to suck multiple times depending on how weak the suction force is which adds mechanical wear.
>>108405593>Usecase? I assume this means gas powered? No bro, the one with electric vacuum pump. Check out aliexpress.>whether these basic soldering kit desolder pumps would breakMy cheap random one did thousand, you just have to clean it here and there. >>108405615>My cheap random one did thousand, you just have to clean it here and there. There's nothing to it and there''s no reason for those to cost 20€+, it's just tube with a spring.Alright, I'll just go with that techrebal $22 soldering kit with the basic bitch pump since it has a lot of accessories and a hopefully decent temperature controlled iron with spare tips, went ahead and splurged another $10 on some quality tip tinner and brass wool to complete the package. I will never financially recover from this purchase once I tally it up to $100 with my choice of TTC Silent Frozen V2 switches, foams, and keycaps.

>>108405832>I'm done with it all.Which is why I'm not bothering with hot swap sockets, just taking advantage of the sale to buy switches and stuff that finally makes my keyboard STFU forever hopefully while keeping the G-Keys and media controls. I might not even bother to buy some spare LED's for all I know, I just don't feel like replacing all of them when they still work so I might just not even bother resoldering them on the main PCB just cause they won't be used but spares are nice so eh, but this is how costs spiral out of control. A few dollars here and there and suddenly you're at 100.>IBM M is endgame for me I love it, I would love this keyboard too for the sound even with the stabilizer rattle but I'm just fatigued by noise by this point in life. Which is a problem that might force me to buy another vertical mouse while I'm at it, if I can't just solder some Kalih or Huano switches on my existing one while I'm at it.

Gonna be assembling and lubing stabilizers for the first time. Is there anything you wish you knew before you first did it yourself?
>muh 8gay pulling gayteThe truth: If your peripherals have a higher polling rate than your monitor and the fps/tick rate of the game you're playing runs at it's already crossed the line into the "overkill" zone. You have gone past the theoretical/mathematical bottleneck and are huffing pure copium.Especially since any argument snake oil consoomers shill polling rates with completely ignores all the other sources of input lag, such as:>higher cpu usage from higher polling rates>usb traffic/controllers the more usb peripherals you have connected causing loss of/delayed data>power plan settings on your OS>background processes>sensor motion sync on mice like on PAW and Razer sensors>perceived lag from low DPI on mice>wireless interference and battery if using wireless>game engine limitations, most games aren't optimized for higher polling rates>v-sync which can introduce 30+ms alone sometimes>the inherent time it takes for a monitor to process an image from its input, AKA it's not just your keyboard retard>debounce on mice and keyboards in generalYou got duped into buying 8gay shit from honeyed marketing words. The "benefit" you get from 1k to 8k is entirely imagined, and retards like Optimum showing slow motion videos without overall context don't prove anything. The absolute "oldest" data that's sent from your given device, ignoring ALL other forms of input lag/delay/whatever you want to call it from all other sources, is as follows.>8k - 0.125ms>4k - 0.250ms>2k - 0.500ms>1k - 1ms>500 - 2ms>250 - 4ms>125 - 8msThat might seem like a pretty big range, but in the grand scope of things let's just say you have 30ms input lag on your system "worst case" (that's in the lower half of the averages). 30.1ms to 38ms is a laughably small window and there is no real world scenario where those 7.9ms save you fucking anything, conscious or unconsciously. Not even top level rhythm gaming, which relies almost solely on muscle memory instead of conscious reaction times, do people even consistently hit like 20-40ms windows. That's 25hz-50hz, btw. This only benefits rhythm games in the absolute best case scenario, and it's diminishing returns from 500hz onwards. That's simply just how reality works.30.1 - 38ms is the margin of error for several different brands of gaymer KB/M, despite them saying "1k+ polling rate", especially if wireless. So long as you're 500hz+ you're good. Again, so long as it exceeds the hz of your monitor + the FPS/tick rate of the game you're playing. The higher you go can easily be detrimental even on top level machines. The only case I can see this being beneficial 0.0001% of the time is if you pay out the ass for a 500+hz monitor and your PC is powerful enough to push whatever game you're playing to 500+FPS to match, which... considering how piss poor optimization is in nugaming riddled with upscaling and frame gen (also sources of lag/delay)... lol, nah.
