Is it really over for Windows 98 on the internet?>No modern TLS or a variety of other protocols and drivers>Browsers can only run the internet equivalent of "heritage railways" with the small subset of websites still working on Windows 98>Over 20 years of unfixed CVEs (Microsoft dropped support in 2006)>Google stopped working in late 2025, one of the last major sites to still support it.>Frogfind exists, but is mostly text only and only works on some websites.Despite depictions of Windows 98 on the internet being popular in art, the reality is that even enthusiasts struggle to do anything useful with it now online. Supermium only goes back to Windows 2000, and Windows 98 is just missing too many APIs to port back that far and extended kernel projects have failed to get any sort of Chromium working. Soon even Windows XP will fall off the internet as Chromium gets too complex to port back as Supermium, which will certainly happen when 32-bit support gets dropped upstream. Eventually the whole "Pre-TPM" era of computers will struggle past 2032 after LTSC ends.
Win98 was already a piece of crap when it was new.BeOS blew that shit out of the water. Faster despite being more secure and stable.Win98 invented putting webshit bloat everywhere.
Well, yeah. Even nocash (who does all of his work on Win98) caved in and bought a tablet to deal with anything his work machine couldn't handle.
Why would you want it on the Internet? Host an archive mirror/proxy and an FTP server or something.>Supermium only goes back to Windows 2000, and Windows 98 is just missing too many APIsThat's because 2000 is a part of the NT branch that survives to this day as Windows 11, whereas 98 is part of an extinct 9x branch that ended with Windows Me.
>>108419620>Google stopped working in late 2025, one of the last major sites to still support it.google gave me a weird one recently when i had my user agent set to something weird from testing something. previously it used to generate an html only page but this time i got a page complaining that i needed javascript so i could use ai so just install chrome pretty pleaseit shocked me to consider the implications on old browsersbut yeah in the future we're going to have to have some "modern tech" air-gapped in the corner for when we have to use somebody's website. europeans are basically already required by their government to have a smartphone if they want banking services, so they get to play the same game if they'd rather not have a smartphone. i hate this world.
JS faggotry might be a problem but you can overcome the SSL thing by using proxy software that converts HTTPS traffic to HTTP for your W98 and vice versa.
