Itt we post improvements/updates we'd like to see on 4chan (or /g/)I'll go first:>let us post more than 1 image we can scroll through like on instagram maybe 2 max so it doesn't eat up the storage on the Mac minis the website runs on. But keep the storage limit the same for example both images combined must add up to be less than 4mb.>ability to post/watch videos with sound on most/all boards. Filesize still limited to 4mb but with sound. Audio auto normalized/loudness normalization on upload so screamers don't matter. Maybe using FFmpeg's loudnorm filter in the background>filename randomizer: a checkbox or something of the sort where if selected will randomize the name of the file you upload. Saves time if there's sensitive info on the filename. someone/mods please send this to hiroshimoot
picrel would be the most obvious and much needed upgrade now that other websites are switching to it.
>>108423207>hiroshimoothe has nothing to do with the day to day stuff of this website
>>108423207This website is only good because it never adds new features. I don't want to listen to your earrape clips, and I don't want to see your slideshow. You can also get userscripts for filename editing.
obvious pixdaiz thread is obvious
>>108423232doesnt webp keep weird metadata?>>108423207autoconvert images like webp to jpg before uploading so we dont have to change it
>>108423207>twitter/reddit screencaps = autoban
>>108423207what about an ip counter
I'd prefer that they unplug
>>108423207Keep filenames when downloading images/videos. It's literally one HTML attribute away.
Easy: give the mods AI image tagging so on every new thread it gets tagged and we can finally prevent logfag spamming
>>108423207When the fuck are we getting an /ai/ board
>>108423207Support for codecs made in the last fucking decade.Say JPEG-XL (.jxl) which is essentially a silver bullet in images,Supports fucking everything, lossy, lossless, animations. it's basically jpg + png + gif, and better than all those three in their specialties.Seriously is chinese moot wanted to lower the bandwidth consumption (and therefore save money) this would be the way to go.You can even upgrade your old .jpg to .jxl for further compression in a lossless way. Ofc making a pic .jxl from the start does get you better compression tho.
>>108423963That would give them less information to track who was in which thread
>>108423207Twitter videos get a popup like youtube ones. Or just letting us have videos with audio would work too.
>>108423541It can but so can JPG and there's nothing stoping people from uploading a .exe virus and renaming it to .JPG. In fact that's literally how 4chan got hacked last year, someone uploaded a postscript virus, renamed it to .pdf LMAO. The fun's over it seems, now 4chan will actually check that the JPG you upload is an actual JPG and not a postscript virus anymore :(.>>108424036JXL doesn't have the same level of support as Webp yet + the decoder needs to be fixed.
I think the imageboard format is a solved problem, I created one with nextjs and pretty much the only thing I added differently from 4chan was a preview on hover and embed mediahttps://umigalaxy.com/explore/videogames/33-resident-evil-requiem
Amoled Black rather than just grey with tomorrow
>>108424161You botched the .webp implementation you fucking retard. Why would you apply lossy compression to .webp? It's literally already like 50% smaller than what the JPG would be you dumb fuck.
>>108423993I second this.
>>108424283Yeah I wasn't feeling good about that decision. I just pushed an update setting it to 100% quality
H. 265 and AV1 with 6 MB across all boards
>>108424495Generational loss is unfortunately a big weakness of Webp so it applying lossy compression to existing .webp images is going to fuck them up real bad long-term as they're download/uploaded again over and over again. It's still a great image format since it can handle animations, transparency, etc but nothing is ever perfect.
>>108424250At least you can change website background through firefox website contrast settings, though it only applies the same settings globally and you can change exceptions afaik
>>108424522H.265 is turbo aids. AV1 would be mega-based thoughbeit.
>>108423207
>>108423232What other websites use webp? I haven't been forced to use webp on other forums yet.
>>108424543I'm going to removed image optimization to webp files altogether, thanks anon
OP can moderate his own thread, banning spammers from threads he has created without having to report them.Moderator powers are handed out at random every couple of hours, so we can all get a chance to ban the persistent spammers. The bans will only last for the couple of hours that we have the powers.Much like /pol/ and /int/ and /sp/ have flags, give /g/ posts a setting where we can all see a poster's user agent.Delete some of the smaller boards. Nobody needs /c/ or /y/ or the wallpaper one. Have a sitewide competition to suggest new boards to replace them.
>>108424594Properly implemented .webp upload support is such a rarity that I'm willing to become a paid subscriber if you can make the Webp uploaded match the one downloaded by another user. I'm not joking btw, just don't do something stupid like make it a yearly pass thing like this gutter of a website does. Flat $5/month seems reasonable.>>108424590Facebook, ebay, Amazon, reddit just to name a few. It's been recently exploding in popularity because while AVIF/JXL are much better, Webp will decode on the most destitute of computers/phones which means you reach a wider audience and don't cause their computers to lag.Interestingly, some do seem to be switching to jpegli instead of Webp but they're rare. Most seem to be migrating from libjpeg-turbo to Webp directly.
>>108423207what happened to the other thread from a few hours ago?
>>108424594Shit man, I thought that would take weeks, arigatou gozaimasu.
>>108424827To be honest the project will never get monetized because I have no users, I just like coding and I'm already starting a react native version for androidBtw I'm gonna push av1 support on next update, this thread has some good ideas
>>108424993I'm not sure about AV1 since VP9 exists and the latter is easier to decode, at the very least I'd suggest limiting the upload resolution to like 720p + 60 FPS limit if you do enable AV1 support. Don't want users DDOSING other users on weak hardware with 120FPS 4K AV1 video lol. Also never say never, I believe if you can focus on what 4chan is doing wrong right now (ie no fucking Webp support) and fix that, this might not end up as a pet project. Like there's a ton of users here looking to jump ship but we keep coming back because altchans suck ass, I tried several that did have .webp support but apply lossy compression to them.Good luck man, I'll be rooting for you.
>>108425060I'll actually take that advice and implement it the way you described, thanks man
>>108425076NP. Eventually low end hardware will improve (ie intel N100 replaces Celeron processors on cheap shit everywhere) and AV1 decoding won't be a problem anymore but that could be 2030, 2035...https://streaminglearningcenter.com/codecs/tesla-rolls-back-youtube-from-av1-to-vp9.html
>>108424827do we really need to save a few kb on pictures?
>>108423207/ai/ board
>>108425060Since most pics are jpeg, most webp uploads would already be lossy2lossy recompression...Not many sources of native webp since everything is jpeg or png
>>108425218It's not just about lower filesize, subjectively Webp image artefacting just looks nicer compared to JPGs irritating blocky/mosquito noise. Which is fine for many noisy photographic images but anything with flat colors/lines (ie anime screenshots) tend to look like dogshit in JPG unless you set the quality level to 100.>>108425241I guess I'll be the first to waste my time converting 1080p Anime screenshots to Anime reaction images in .webp.
>>108425290>twitter screenshotYou DO realize most people from there have shit for brains, right? Like actual fucking human shit (ie from india).
>>108425328Yeah, they said they are adding geographical filters though
>>108425276>I guess I'll be the first to waste my time converting 1080p Anime screenshots to Anime reaction images in .webp.That's my point. You'd need to go back to the source and retake those screenshots directly in webp otherwise it's pointless, it's just a jpeg but worse and you just reencoded the noise to save 50KB
>>108424658>Moderator powers are handed out at random every couple of hours, so we can all get a chance to ban the persistent spammers. The bans will only last for the couple of hours that we have the powers. This is such a good idea for a high trust community but you know the average poster here would abuse the fuck out of it and either target ban people they don't like or just ban everyone. Even if its for a few hours, if some clique can agree to do the same shit every time they get "elected " it could functionally be a permanent ban.
>>108424658>OP can moderate his own thread, banning spammers from threads he has created without having to report them. That would be the end of OP BTFO.
>>108423207Not sure if the tech is there, but disabling access to 4chan from mobile devices. Like most of the internet, smartphones have always been the true source of most problems. 4chan before smartphones was a paradise.
Improvements I'd make:>rangeban India>replace 4chan passes with a new 4chan premium subscription with three tiers, Premium, Premium+, and Premium Ultra, with benefits including boosted threads, priority replies, larger file sizes, edit threads, creation of restricted threads, larger character limits, no timers, and more.>Replace captcha with proof-of-work.>Add an /ai/ containment board and ban all AI posts outside the board.>Add a new /meta/ board and revise Rule 8 to ban all complaints outside the /meta/ board.>Launch a new mobile app.>Add a MPA system that is similar to the one over at the bald man with glasses imageboard that would be used for new and sus IPs. AI would review most images, but one that are flagged may be manually reviewed by a mod or janny.>VPN posting would be allowed again, but you would have a specialized token and all images would be reviewed under the MPA system.>Replace most IP bans with a token system instead, where users would be identified and banned via a token assigned to each user and device.>Revamp the rules, and make some rules guidelines instead.>Modernize the software stack, and redesign both the backend and frontend of 4chan to make it more secure, while maintaining a version with the old design for at least 5 years after a redesign is launched.>Add all 4chan X features.>Add webp, webm and avif file format support.>Revamp the board categories.>Replace most of the janitors with AI and outsourced moderation.>Bring back /qa/ as a blue /b/.>Pay the mods and janitors.>Allow users to create desktop-only threads on certain boards to filter out phoneposters.>Add a streamer/e-celeb containment board.>Actually utilize the 4chan Xitter account for regular announcements, greentext posting, and shitposting.>Add a new sitewide public Discord Server, Matrix room, and Telegram Group for 4chan. The 4chan IRC would stay.>Bring back the IP counter.
>>108425520More improvements since I hit the character limit:>Allow users to create threads with ID's, which would especially be useful for generals. I would keep this feature free.>Add a general mode, where you can select a checkbox that would give OP mod tools to moderate a general.>The token system would be ranked based on device trustworthiness based on past bans, the trustworthiness of the IP based on spur.us analyzation, past bans, the odds of this users having been a past user or troublemaker, browser agent, device agent, and more. The token would be based on the ID.>Allow users to react to other posts with emotes and allow users to post emotes, which would be both site, board and maybe even general based.>IP trustworthiness would be ranked based on the country origin, and whether it's a detected mobile IPs, residential VPN IP, or data center VPN IP address.
>>108425508Like would you allow mobile devices to at least lurk or permabanning all mobile IP addresses from even accessing the site? I believe both are already possible; you can ban certain IP ranges from accessing websites and the sharty (ewww!) allows posters to make desktop only threads that block phoneposters, which I assume could be implemented in 4chan.
Mobile users are 90% of the userbase, it's not feasible
>>108423207I want an rss feed of each thread and board. I don't want to request the .json each time.
>>108425749Anon, how do you think RSS works?
Hover to see images like on 4chan x
>>108425940Just use 4chan x
>>108425520Not just India
>>108425520>>1084256134chan hire this man.
>>108423207all jannies and mods with reddit accounts get permanently banned. hiro fucks off
>>108425328The guy who replied to him is a retard but primeagen is legit and understands the need for gatekeeping without being an autist about it.
>>108423207I just really want audio on /an/
The day I download an image from 4chan and it turns out to be a WebP, is the day I start mailing packages to people.
>>108423207>let us post more than 1 imageThat's garbage, that limitation comes from the sheer amount of shit that gets uploaded here every day. The altchan you saw that at probably has 0.01% of the traffic.
an /ai/ containment board for ai related generals on the site, maybe make two (one nsfw, one sfw)
>>108426587NSFW AI is a recipe for disaster with all the deep fakes
