Any estimates on the Steam Frame's release? I'm guessing June
>>
vr is dead
>>
>>108434064
wasn't it just pushed back?
>>
>>108434070
False
>>
>>108434075
Yeah, they *hope* to release it by June, and Ithink they're pretty confident about it, but they're leaving open the possibility that it'll take until late 2026 for release mainly because they were pretty damn confident about early 2026 and look how that turned out.

i still don't understand the use case for VR headsets outside of playing that closeted trans simulator VRchat

Go buy an oculus
What I really want is the cube, a tiny desktop is the goal.
>>
>>108434125
it costs exactly as much as a desktop you can upgrade, why would you buy a game console pretending to be a PC?
>>
>>108434157
>game console pretending to be a PC?
It’s a PC first, console second, and the form factor. Every game developer will have the option to have their game rated for cube compatibility, so I won’t have to waste time trying to figure out if it will run or not. Kinda of a cringe Reddit take, but I think it will help contribute to Linux becoming more adopted.
>>
if apple couldn't make VR a thing, then no one can

What the fuck, Valve.

VR games are fun :)
>>
>>108434858
>>108434955
VR's primary (and essentially sole) major use case is video games and similar immersive applications. Apple jumped the gun by thinking their users were *so* retarded that they would spend three grand on a glorified iPhone. If they made it for gaming I guarantee it would be the monopoly product for gaming rn, but obviously Apple can't do that because they're Apple, so they *have* to make a general use product *because they refuse to be niche), so it flopped. Simple as. It's for the better they didn't try and get their grubby hands on VR, as they would have tried what Meta did and made a proprietary prison that sucked the life out of every other VR ecosystem.
>>
>>108435056
It's VR, you gotta give and take. I'd say the Steam Frame sits right in the middle of cheap and expensive hardware. Perfect for just putting on and using in almost any situation for almost anything (it helps to have a beefy computer, of course, and if you don't have a beefy computer in 2026 what are you even doing?)
>>
>>108435148
Except the index was 120hz out of the box, with a 144 option. VR is the only place where a high refresh actually matters.
>>
>>108434070
Not dead but it's insultingly overpriced thus not valid in the grand scheme.
>>
Noone will have jobs in 2 months and you're still buying expensive toys. You should buy a bag of lentils instead.

>>108434064
I don't.
I got a Valve Index back in 2019 and it was a paperweight for 8 months.
Then Half-Life Alyx released, great game, got it for free with the Index, then it became a paperweight for 6 more years, the worst 1079 € spent in gaming hardware in my life.
Half-Life 3 will be non VR and probably release with the Steam Machine later this year, so there is no point in getting a VR headset.

Apple released Vision Pro as a tech demo for development. They said this openly and it's amazing how fucking stupid people who imply otherwise are. It was specifically priced high for that reason. This was never intended to be a major consumer product.

Apple is a good hardware company and as such they understand that VR headsets are one hardware leap away from becoming a mass consumer product. In order to drive software development they got the "future" product out there in advance. Now, when the consumer-tier product can be released as prices come down there will be a slew of developers familiar with the tech who can develop killer apps. This is a good strategy.

The price of a high-quality headset needs to be under $1500 and ideally $1000 for it to become a major consumer device. Currently it is closer to $2500 for the high resolution, lightweight devices that can have major consumer appeal. You can only sell the mid-range, heavier sets if you do so at a loss like the Quest, intending to make back returns selling software (the old console model). Steam is taking the same approach, but appearing to want to sell the headsets at cost rather than a loss (better business considering how much money Meta has been losing overall).

While the Steam Frame will be cool and around $700-$1000 at cost to produce/sell it is the next generation similar to Vision Pro and the Galaxy XR that will push this into a more mainstream market. I expect that it will be mid/late 2027 when we start seeing this lightweight, high resolution devices at the consumer price point that can move units. That is when VR will really take off.

Apple positioned itself in the space several years in advance and will probably do very well when the consumer market hits. Their finger-controls that don't require holding a physical device is probably a big innovation (I've never used it).

Nerds on these boards don't seem to understand that VR isn't a gaming platform, even if gaming is part of it
>>
>>108436589
IMO the biggest hindrance to VR headset use is the friction of putting the thing on. It's not like throwing on glasses it is strapping and balancing this heavy thing onto your head. That is what is responsible for the phenomenon of people leaving it sitting collecting dust for months at a time.

The newer form factors will solve this - it's a matter of hardware cost and sophistication. The rumor that the next Quest will be a lightweight headset more like goggles that you can throw-onto your face quickly should be a clue. Having the battery and compute offloaded via cable - an Apple innovation - is a great solution.
>>
>>108434119

It’s true there are a lot of autistic trannies on there but some of them don’t make a huge deal about it. But even then, VR isn’t necessary to play VRC. Anyone who insists you have to have one in order to talk to them isn’t worth your time.
>>
>>108434955

Disagree. There is no point in getting an AVP and I’m one of the bigger Apple advocates in here. I tested one with an Apple rep and it had no software justifying its existence. It would need to support SteamVR for it to be considered and even then that’s a stretch. The PSVR2 costs like $300 and is great on PC.
>>
>>108434858
apple explicitely made it as not-VR as possible
t. I own it
>>
>>108438075
Meta has basically proven that vrchat/worlds type shit is not the killer app many want to believe. It's just Second LIfe with better graphics, and that never had mass appeal.

The main obstacle to VR is content production being hard. Apple has helped this by making "spatial images" options in their phone cameras and things like that. Until people can capture high quality 3d visuals on their own and share them in VR it will be hard to have enough content for people to actually consume.

Immersion is the killer feature of VR. Some experiences benefit from this and for others it makes little difference. The companies that will succeed in the VR space are the ones who get this. Meta's VR software divisions was clearly being run by morons who didn't understand this. Now that they've cleaned house in that area and started making better choices we'll probably see some real improvements. In this case it is the competition from Steam (and Pico) that has prompted the improvement.

All new hardware requires a killer app to sell units. This rule is as old as electronic hardware. Meta has demonstrated that virtual worlds like Horizon (and by extension VRchat) are NOT that killer app. This is good because now software teams can focus on other shit.

>>108436863
Well they haven't made a good one since morrowind. Skyrim is just for the mods not the game.

>>

I heard vrchat players are racist toward desktop-only players because they robotically stay stiff and also quest users because they're hard-limited on RAM and polycounts and can't load extremely detailed worlds or even models, they just avoid you cus you're poor and you're gonna drag down their vrchat experience by being near them
>>
>>108438161
pornography is a very popular video category and like all video it benefits enormously from the immersion features of VR. it's also difficult to produce that full immersion quality of video.

AR glasses have become rather popular and these can and will produce 3d level video that when shared and viewed by people wearing VR goggles will be immersive. This plus the software on phones that can convert images into 3d will be what drives this.

VR youtube vlogging is going to be massive.
>>
>>108438211
I'm a fan of vr, but it's still failed to become ubiquitous. The envisioned benefits and capabilities have been around for over a decade but it is still yet to capture the mainstream. That said, I'm not an expert and if meta thinks it's the next big thing™ maybe there's something to it
>>
>>108438248
see: >>108437953

We are on the cusp of the hardware becoming good enough and cheap enough for mass adoption. There are some practical and physical requirements that have to be met and the hardware technology has been trying to get there for decades. We have it today and you can buy those headsets, they are just too expensive for the consumer.

VR consumer devices will be the hot new thing Christmas 2027.
>>
>>108438159
Oblivion's good, but Skyrim's kinda mediocre which is a shame. The Creation engine was an improvement on some fronts, but they didn't clean it up and the creation kit's even more annoying and clunky than the construction set (this isn't to mention that despite being more capable, the experience has been significantly neutered).

In any case, just don't get me started on the Oblivion Remaster.
>>
>>108434091
Sourcing the SOC for the Frame is probably vastly more easy than buying memory as a separate component for the Machine at least.
But if Valve are holding things back because they want to launch everything at once...
>>
>>108438561
If I had to guess Valve is holding back to make sure the software is there for release. Valve understands that software is what matters and having a good "launch lineup" is how you move units and create the impression that your device is a success.
>>
>>108438649
>Valve is holding back to make sure the software is there for release.
This would have been true until the announcement. I can't help but worry that it's about the hardware shortage now.

>>108438649
They'll 100% tie the official launch of Deadlock into it, Maybe a new VR game/Demo, and... I doubt it, but all the HL3 rumours too.

reminder that VTOL VR is still the best VR sim game released to date
>>
>>108435374
Again, give and take. Index achieved slightly higher refresh rate at the cost of costing more, being far heavier, and having an annoying wire. The Frame, on the other hand, has somewhat lower FPS (not too low, 120 base with 90 minimum is really good for a VR headset all things considered), is one of the lightest high quality VR headsets ever made (especially for how high quality it is), and has no annoying cable *while still being connected to the PC real time using the 6E dongle. There's always marginally more powerful headsets for exponentially higher costs, but I think the Steam Frame really hits the optimal point between price and performance and convenience + comfort.
>>
>>108435780
There have been no meaningful releases since alyx
>>
>>108435780
The Steam Frame will solve this btw (assuming they can hit the 800 or lower mark). Anything under 1000 is especially impressive when considering inflation since the Steam Index's release (and that's not even considering the RAM and storage price hikes as of late)

That and it's Valve, which you should always choose over Meta

>>108436578
Ngl it sounds like you didn't look into the kind of games you could play with a VR headset. The main games you will play in VR are social. I really enjoy this actually, but I get if that isn't your hing.

I do recommend the following, though: Pavlov, Gorilla Tag, VR Chat, Beat Saber, Half Life: Alyx. These are fantastic games to play on VR and if you like social games you will love all of these (Alyx is single player and I get you played it but its always worth mentioning for others)

>>
>>108438038
Another great reply. I agree the compute and power puck is a good idea, but desu it's probably gonna transform into what Valve just innovated into with the 6E dongle. That thing is so, so tiny, and they can easily be smaller when engineered as a part of the puck itself such taht users may never even need to work with it or know its in there at all. I can easily imagine Apple and all other companies doing this, especially with the major wireless movement of the last half decade or so.
>>
>>108438085
Good points, and I agreed with your position, but then I read >>108437953 and changedmy mind. Might be worth a read.
>>
>>108438126
Agreed, good reply. I think the biggest inflection point VR and headsets in general can have is when it transitions into being something that you don't even notice. When it merges with the real world in such a way that it becoems a necessary substrate for many features of daily life and work, much like the smartphone experienced. Obviously this would lean more into XR, where you essentially use it without thinking much about it. This will easily be here by 2030, whether by way of headsets, goggles, and/or glasses (probably leaning toward the latter).

It's not taking off, nobody wants it. Even an AVPro sold at $500 would go nowhere, because most people don't have any use for it. Zucc's headset already sold a shitload as a Christmas present for kids, which accomplished nothing. And they're selling at a loss. "lightweight, high resolution devices at the consumer price point"? In this economy? Are you delusional?
No one's going to put on an isolating pair of goggles every time they want to do anything unless the experience is genuinely breathtaking. Not happening when we can't even get one fucking headset (that doesn't otherwise suck) with an FoV above ski mask level. AR has a chance, but that's a different thing altogether and might still fail to take off for another decade+.
>>
Does it have eyetracking or not? Some anon on /v/ claimed it only had gaze tracking. Pretty lame if it doesn't track you blinking in social games like VRChat or the like. Not a deal breaker, but still kinda lame if they didn't think to utilize it for the social aspect as well.

VR isn't worth anything over 400 dollars. Its like buying a dead game console with less than 5 games worth playing. It only has value as a simulator accessory but people don't pay more than 4-500 for an accessory unless they are in deep.

You can find lightly used Quest 2 and Quest 3S on sale on most local buy and sells for dirt cheap, they can be used for PCVR. They have crappy FOV. But if you were wanting to just fuck around to see if you liked it, it's a good way to try and decide if the big boy stuff is worth it to save up for.
