Is GIMP (and more recently, PhotoGIMP) a reasonable replacement to Photoshop for non-professionals? I recently switched over to Linux and I just can't be fucked trying to get PS 2025 to open or to use 15 year old versions of the program. If Adobe and Micropenis weren't illegally colluding this wouldn't be an issue, but alas. Will it take long to get the hang of GIMP? Also, I like that GIMP is a slur.

its good, it has some features missing obviously but you can make it do pretty much everything ps can and its always a plus that it doesn't infect the user's shitbox with AI crap

Its cumbersome to use and missing a few features, but generally speaking can pretty much do what PS can do. I haven't tried PhotoGIMP though just talking about classic GIMP.

It's always been well known as being symbolic of open source software more broadly - highly functional and stable but with a bit of 'too many cooks' going on, an ugly UI, and some really weird decisions that no one actually likes. Most other FOSS has caught up and fixed these kind of issues, but GIMP is still doing retarded shit, but in saying that it does work and do pretty much anything you want it to.

Look at the W in "Windows" in the menubar, how do linux fans deal with such horrible font rendering? Just disgusting. You guys have no taste.

remember when gimp had that weird detached multi window UI? lul

photoshop always had that and its STILL like that

Absolutely.
>Will it take long to get the hang of GIMP?
No, but the muscle memory from Photoshop might be kicking in. You could try to make the UI the same as PS, apparently this is popular among users.

For non-professionals? Maybe. But only for non-professionals.

this
I have worked many years as a designer in an advertising agency and tried to re-produce the stuff I did in Photoshop in GIMP, it worked, I had to do a few more steps in GIMP but I could re-create everything so it looked the same as in PS.

No, GIMP is a troll program made to prove that the community will defend open source software no matter how bad it is because it's open sourcce.

Use Krita instead, its free, open source and better than gimp in every single way

Homies out there using absolute dogshit when PS CS6 is completely free, portable & runs on every possible OS that exists.
It's so free that not even Adobe cares enough on taking it down from the Archive.

Make new layer

The trick here is that Photoshop is both good image editing program and decent drawing program, while Gimp is only a good image editing program and for drawing you should use Krita. Actual adobefag artists don't really use Photoshop for drawing they use Adobe Illustrator anyways.
>>
>>108450724
Yeah I agree with >>108450744, because GIMP is not graphic design program, and Krita is.
Krita is good for drawing, design, illustration, painting, etc. Gimp is good for applying filters on images.

I don't really get it. Can you actually not draw a circle in Gimp, or is that just a meme? That can't be real, and even if it were at some point, somebody would have just implemented it in like 15 minutes.

My favorite part of gimp is watching youtubers try to accomplish anything at all in it.
It's worse than blender before the UI was streamlined.
Photopea works great, albeit cloud.
Piracy in a container may be the best solution.

Daily reminder that GIMP's "community" is real but it is fragmented and decentralized across Reddit, GNOME forum, Discord and IMP forums and Pixls.us, and most people are only doing very simple things like cropping images or recoloring. Rarely do we see anyone do anything super advance like me.

I personally think the only thing GIMP team should do is make a third party plugin ecosystem to allow virtually ANYTHING and then just let the community run wild and only maintain security. Instead of servicing ungreateful zoomers like a slave.

I have the mentality : give the community the raw tools and stable ecosystem they need and let them figure it out themselves what to do, while we gradually build on a shared commons.

Normies have the mentality : ITS FREE MAN FREE SHIT BRO FREE STUFF MANE., GIMME GIMME, FREE SHIT. MUH FREE STUFFZ XD

that's the problem. The FOSS userbase has too many entitled bastards that produce nothing but want everything for free and then whine about wanting more updates. That's exactly why an anarcho communist gift economy will fail if implemented IRL, everyone takes free shit and no one gifts back and the danger of scarcity.

If I wanted to start developing a piece of software now, I would make it extensible, but I would fucking NEVER open source it. You download and run the fucking binary and you like it. people and especially companies took advantage of FOSS and fucked it to death. Humanity doesn't deserve FOSS.

Fellow linux user, I have given up on tedious GIMP. I managed to install Affinity v3 on my system and this is gonna be my daily driver.

of course you can

circle select tool + fill = circle
want the circle to be just a line?
select > shrink > choose pixel thickness

I've won multiple design contests against 20+ designers using Photoshop just using GIMP on 99designs and designcrowd.

I even use it for logo design and when finished just trace bitmap in inkscape for an SVG.
>>
>>108452724
If you must do close source don't use any patent protections or legal restrictions, Just give them an offline binary to avoid ethical issues.

its neurotypicals that are the problem.

They don't understand the importance of FOSS and a decentralized economy powered by privacy respecting software
They just see MUH FREE SHIT

That's why if I had too choose between Lunduke's side or the Trans Lesbian. I'd go with the latter 100%. I disagree with them calling everyone they disagree with a nazi/fascist and the lefty tribalism that Jordan Peterson talks about. I detest it. But overall they are neurodivergent and see FOSS's value beyond "muh free shit" Lunduke explicitly said he wanted normal people in the FOSS community. Normal people are soulless consumers that go on about "MUH FREE SHIT" and don't care about privacy so he is technically making the problem worse. especially by allowing MAGA normies to flood into the community. I personally don't want them restricted but if they show up they have to carry themselves by their own bootstraps and I don't think they can do that, considering they are so tech illiterate they need Grok for everything. FOSS will never appeal to MAGA people who generate Jesus and Trump videos with Grok all day.

>It takes a few seconds
That's exactly the problem.
It shouldn't take longer than a second. And it is not the only example. Gimp is full of shit that got solved eons ago but they choose to go alternative retarded ways just for the sake of being different.

If you just do a funny maymay once a month it's not a problem.
If you want to use the program professionally daily, all those retarded hoops that make you take 5x as long for the most basic shit this will add up quickly.

The most valuable thing you have in life is fucking TIME. Do not waste the most valuable thing you have on neckbeards on their retarded ego trip.
And no, Adobe isn't an alternative either anymore since they went full retard in their own ways too and the shit they pump out nowadays isn't worth the money anymore.

I have to process 100s of photos a week for work, Gimp can't do it because it lacks automation type features completely.

Yes I know imagemagic exists but doesn't work for me because there's enough variance week to week that have to be tweaked by hand.

I find GIMP's shortcuts weird. Like I don't care what keys and modifiers they choose, I don't need them to clone photoshop, it's just that maybe 90% of what I do in PS has easy shortcuts that let me work fast but those same tasks in GIMP have me reaching for the mouse. Like R for rectangle select, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V to paste as new layer (thank fuck floating selection is not the default at long fucking last) but the layer extents are not the canvas size by default. Okay I can live with that, but then why isn't there a shortcut for layer -> canvas size in the default set? Surely that's something that most people will need immediately after a Ctrl-V? There's loads of weird context problems too, like when working with text layers your shortcuts are all fucked because the text layer steals input no matter how many ESC and click aways you try. And then if you try to edit by clicking it has the audacity to create a new text layer. Like why in the actual fuck would you program it to be clearly wrong BOTH ways?
