Those contradicting replies you mention, are not given by 1 individual and we are not a hive mind either. Different people have different opinions. So what you seem to have portrayed in your post is wrong. In order to filter out the answers you are looking for, you need to be more tech literate or just follow the crowd and hope for the best. Linux community is opinionated. You will always get a lot of strong suggestions.As a bonus, here is my suggestion to you: Use default Ubuntu installation at first. In time you are going to form your own opinion about stuff and be confident enough to deviate from the norm. Or you can safely remain ignorant and still be able to do everything you need on Ubuntu.
