I have the following conundrum:
I know that one of my coworkers will be fired. the guy sucks technically speaking, but he has a kid.
I wish to tell him. I want him to be prepared. another factor is that he's trying to move to the office from another city, and so he might end up wasting money.
I don't know if someone else knows about his firing, so I can't tell him directly, not even anonymously, because if he says anything I would get doxxed pretty fast, probably.
how would you warn him, or dissuade him from moving, without exposing yourself?
>>
My favorite coworker who was like the team mom got sacked, I don't care if her work was shit now I have 0 morale since then and these whole projects can go to fucking hell.

Its hard to say. I once told my female coworker something in confidence about something only me and someone else knew and she instantly blew my cover. Afterwards when I basically went "What the fuck is your problem? If you do this then no one will ever tell you anything" and she got mad at me as if she did nothing wrong.
Based on my own experience I would say keep quiet, not everyone knows how or that they should keep mum on things and this good deed that you are trying to do will blow up in your face.

what labor law does telling someone theyre about to be fired violate?
yeah its obviously not good if they find out you told him. if your assumption is that he will immediately start manufacturing evidence for wrongful termination on hearing it, then you have answered your own question: dont do anything. or did you expect someone to teach you how to astrally project inside his head to plant the idea without him knowing?

>>108453229

>>108452850
Fired or laid off? Firing someone takes time, and there needs to be documented steps to correct performance unless he went streaking through the office or something. If it's performance related, he already knows he's doing a shit job and being fired shouldn't come as a surprise. Unless you're in the chain of command you probably shouldn't be privy to it at all, so about the only thing you might do is make sure his manager is aware he's trying to move and all that. Don't tell the guy himself, there's the chance he'll go loose cannon and sabotage stuff, get caught, and then squeal on you for telling him.
>>
>>108453243
>dont do anything. or did you expect someone to teach you how to astrally project inside his head to plant the idea without him knowing?
I guess I could be subtle enough about it in a way that he only realizes later, or just try to dissuade him from wasting more time and money.

>>108453249
>Fired or laid off?
I don't know, but I assume he'll be laid off. in any case, in my country any worker can sue for being laid off or fired, and he might even win.

>you probably shouldn't be privy to it at all
I know, boss told me it's confidential info

>make sure his manager is aware he's trying to move and all that
I don't think the boss cares much. there have been similar instances in the past.

>Don't tell the guy himself, there's the chance he'll go loose cannon and sabotage stuff, get caught, and then squeal on you for telling him.

the first job i got out of college (and i'm still in) is basically a joke benchwarming programming job. we don't have centralized repositories. we use gitlab and azure and some internal system for hosting shit and a lot of people just keep code on their local machines or on a physical server they ssh into.
no one really checks up on me or requires much, so i basically just drag my feet on projects and as long as i am apparently making progress, it's fine. i'm hybrid and on days when i'm at home i can just sleep in until like noon and hold down a button on my keyboard to keep teams active.
how atypical is this as a job? part of me feels like i'm rotting if i stay here and i'm worried i'm going to lose skills. but the other part of me likes being able to watch youtube videos in bed and get paid for it.
if i get another job will i be able to find one like this again or is this rare?

i'm 30 and part of me wishes i did. i'd like to have gone for something noncombat like 35N and try to get a 3 year contract. if i'd have done that right after high school, i could have probably done some fun shit and gotten a clearance out of it, and gotten tuition paid for.
i could have gone to a better school but out of state tuition is crazy so i just went to a state one, and i think that sucks. i think if you went to a school with smart people at it, you'd probably make friends with those people and it's useful for progressing your life.
because the people i'm friends with were the people i went to school with.

>>108453976
Assuming you're in the US:
I was in the Navy from 2016-2020 as an IT and I would advise against it. It does largely depend on your life circumstances and personality, though. For me, I was broke, young, with no education/experience, and no one to help me. If your life situation is like that, the military is a good starting point for your career because you get training and work experience and you can get certs/college paid for. But if you've already got the funding for certs/college, or the opportunity to acquire experience in the field without the military, I'd suggest taking that first.
I was also a poor fit personality wise for the military. I'm one to question the "why" of things, and to see inefficiencies in a corporate system and call them out. If you can stand someone with an obvious lust for power telling you to do things just to have control over you (legitimate psycho/sociopaths) without a real purpose, or you aren't able to identify such things, then you could be a good fit otherwise you'll probably be miserable for 4 years.

sirs 1 question

Currently i have almost 10 yoe and im employed. my job is nice and sometimes i have nothing to do all week, only problem is i need to go to the office 3x/week. My pay is good but i was thinking if i could get a similar job 100% wfh, then eventually i could get another one and end up earning way more than today even if both pay less than my current job. So i will start focusing on get a wfh job.

My stack and most of my experience is backend finance w spring ecosystem, angular, aws, azure, db2/ms sql, quality gates, autosys and cicd. Can i go with this or this stack is too entrepisy for a wfh job? Do i need to learn tools used by smaller corps like kotlin, react, vue and focus on fullstack?

I am incapable of thoughts beyond coding basic shit at work. Idkwtfii

it's like when other people program they hold on to these facts. I have no clue

On a semi related note, gpt 5.4 saved my ass this week. Somehow I migrated code from slop to acceptable code without knowing how the slop worked. The migrated code didn't provide the day data so I told gpt 5.4 to just make it work, and the tests passed. I didn't understand anything.

Fuuck I feel dumb, but pandas data engineering is also fucked up

m8, you said he's already a bad developer, but he's also obtuse on top of that. All young men are naïve like that and have to learn, you're not his dad. If you want to at the minimum, you can give him some blanket advice about "always having a backup in these times" or "I've always thought what if I get fired..." or something like that, but don't put your own integrity on the line for him. You've been trusted by your managers enough that they'll tell you who they're going to fire, if you go behind their back and tell this young guy what they told you (a person they like enough to NOT fire), they're not going to trust you very much in the future.

Secondly, if your managers tell people who they're going to fire before doing so, take that as a precaution about how they're potentially going to act to you in the future when they want to can you too. aka, they'll probably tell someone else and not tell you first, and then spring it on you.
>>
>>108454314
most companies won't allow you to get another job if you're employed with them as wfh full-time, otherwise you get fired
it's especially bad if you break a non-compete clause
but you wouldn't be the first person to ever get two full-time tech jobs at the same time
it sounds too stressful for someone like me who enjoys laying back with frequent breaks but still has to deal with high demand of unclear tasks
>>
>>108454549
>All young men are naïve like that and have to learn

Some people never learn. I had a coworker who was a bad and lazy developer. He lasted long only because of favoritism. When ownership of the company changed, he eventually got fired after it became obvious he was barely doing any work at all. Despite his firing he didn't change his attitude and lifestyle.

I guess you could start learning to prompt, since everyone is asking workers to do that shit. if you manage to build (vibe code) something decent, you might either get a job showing that as a "finished product", or might even start your own stuff.

> I am really interested in proving myself but just feel exhausted after work prepping for interviews
I know that feel, anon. shit's hard. I myself haven't learned a thing in quite a while, even though I have lots of free time, and that's simply because my job sucks my motivation out of me. I'm fucking tired of this bullshit, but even though I have enough savings to live for, like, a decade, I won't resign.. cuz the money is too good.

I've tried but I find pure vibecoding anything just pure hell. Maybe its also skill issue but its great at getting something setup but once it says its "done", getting it to wrap it all up into something you can actually distribute to others seems like it is never able to do without a fuck load of headache.

This will come for a lot of us soon enough. At my place there has been this huge push to get everyone using AI and building MCP, claude skills, plugins for everything. People are working harder than before even with AI assistance as no one wants to get left behind and lose their job. There's been a huge ramp up in expected productivity and managers seem to expect people to create platforms in days now. I am not sure what the future holds, thought I am looking forward to the next major production outage.

Yeah, at my old job, supervisors were pushing to implement AI in our everyday work as well. It kind of redpilled me on what a grift the whole push for AI is right now and even if its not as productive as flesh and blood employees, the companies are beholden to the shareholders heavily invested in it and don't really care.

I don't miss that shit and probably won't be going back into tech ever again.

>What do Principals even do?
Just the word for the engineer who's in charge. If it's a huge company, senior doesn't cut it because you have lots of senior devs. Lead might not either since there's probably one for each department. Think principal is supposed to be the top dev at the company who

I'm at a small company, my title is principal even though I'm the only engineer. Bosses weren't going for "lead" and IMO lead more firmly implies there are people under you. I wanted a title higher than senior since "senior" too often means some 25 year old. Principal seemed like a good word to imply complete ownership over our projects and systems, someone who calls the shots on hardware and tech stack on top of building it all. Probably a little inflated, but if you've looked at LinkedIn in the last five years, basically everyone is calling themselves an executive or a chief, even when the company is three people.

If you start talking to workers about who's getting fired and whatnot, it could be labeled as interruption of a businesses or sabotage (just think of the grimiest kike fucker lawyer, I'm just saying that's something they could possibly label what you're doing as). So just be quiet and let the guy get fired. You're not his dad, it's not your business, and you just said you're not even his friend. If he knocked up some chick I'm sure he has testicles enough to take care of himself.

But more realistically, it would just piss off your manager, even if you already hate him. If I was your boss and I told you I was going to fire some chump because he's dead weight and a waste of money, and then I found out you immediately ran to him and told him, then I'm going to think you're an underhanded weasel and it would piss me off. If you want to be a good person, I recommend you tell your boss that this guy has a kid, and that you think he deserves at least a heads up before he's laid off. Then you can leave that decision in your manager's hands and leave it at that, that's the best you can do.

>Any advice on professional development?
elaborate. You want to be a paid software dev?
>Should I go for a masters degree or pursue certifications?
Both can you make you more competitive and standout and that will help, but, more people are thinking that too, and universities are offering more masters to people to take advantage of this (especially incoming Indians so they can stay in the US). They're ultimately not required but the bar is slowly rising to where more people are going to have them and you may have to get them too. Skills trump all though, companies always value rockstars. Also, depends on what sector you want to work in. CS Ed needs master's or PhD, certain DoD work needs master's, most IT work doesn't need anything, most regular software dev jobs require a bachelor's unless you're a super rockstar.

if your boss is that much of a faggot, and you don't like your job, and it sounds like you've got enough money right now, you might want to consider finding a new job. It won't get any better, it only gets worse. Though, this is a shit time to find a new job, it's bad out there, even for seniors.

anon, you don't have to tell me this. I'm always looking for a new job lmao. things aren't that easy though. no one would pay me what I make here, with the benefits I have (including the arbitrary benefits we give ourselves..), the little workload, etc.
though I live in latin america, so if an american company hired me, things would be very different. but I don't fit the requirements... so, again, no such option. I have other options, though, each one more shady than the previous one.

I know the feeling anon, and honestly do the jump.
If you get laid off, how do you think an interview would go? My last job was exactly like this: late stage startup, 30min daily sessions, 15 minutes of actual work, keep an eye on slack and otherwise do whatever I wanted, from naps, to YouTube, to eating out, to vydia. I was the most productive guy on the team (Rails backend dev) but when my manager hinted for a senior promotion and something like >>108453494 happened, I knew I needed to jump boat.
A friend told me about a cybersec job which he thought I would be a great fit, and for the next 6 months I dived in on TryHackMe and scheduled an interview.
Still working on the new job, making 3x as much (plus many productivity bonus since I'm the only one automating my job away) and I know that if I got laid off I could bounce back quickly.

I don't have as much free time as before, but I still fuck around on my free time and no one bats an eye, as long as I keep delivering (besides it's remote, so peak comfy)

If retirement doesn't matter to you then don't bother you can make up with 401k maxing and extra investments, If the job doesn't interest you aka special forces or some cool military job then don't bother. It's easier to get a clearance within the military but you can still get one with a bachelors and Security+ at any random government contract.

>a bachelor's doesnt stand out on a resume anymore. I figure if I get my masters in will look better than most other devs who just got their bachelor's
a bachelor's hasn't stood out for a while, it's just a hoop/checkmark today. A master's stands out now, but soon, it might become a checkmark as well, and then bachelor's will be as useful as a cert.
>but I worry the student loans wont be worth it.
I highly recommend you get one of the cheap ones, like Georgia Tech's (OMSCS). The real cost though doesn't come from just the degree. With most master's degrees, JUST the classes by themselves... in total it costs anywhere from $10k-$50k (usually it's 12 classes). It's the cost of living that's really expensive, because it takes time to get that degree and during you have to pay rent and food. On average it's 2 years to get a master's, so you'll have 2 years of living expenses too.

What the fuck this is retarded. No one has ever cared about you getting exactly 40 hours in at software development jobs. So long as you seem to be doing approximately 40 hours and more importantly actually get work done it doesn't fucking matter. I never bother to use PTO unless I'm gonna be out the entire day. If you're any good you can probably still outperform a lot of people with putting in less than 20 actual hours lmao.

Well you can use a formula in excel that would do [exactly what I asked it for]." Why is this shit so fucking trash? I asked ChatGPT on my phone and it just spat out exactly what I needed....

At [big tech company] I coded a risk based testing application that pulled from Jira/GitHub/Firebase Crashlytics/DataDog with a FastAPI backend.

If I create a from-scratch risk based testing application that pulls from Azure Dev Ops with a Go backend, will I get fucked over for IP theft? I just want to put this on my GitHub for a personal project.
>>
>>108459812

How would anyone ever get you for IP theft for that? For starters they have to understand your code
>>

I'll never understand nostalgia faggots. These people want restrictions and zero responsibilities in lieu of having no money to fix any issues in their life. Id rather be a broke nigga who has goals for another 150 years than someone with zero control for another 40 years.

I'm trying really hard to be a wholesome chungus faggot but every other day I have a professional encounter with a woman and 90% of the time they're negative and I'm reminded of why I fucking hate women so much holy shit

its so demoralizing. In 2021 i put in 30 applications got a two stage interview and offer.

Now with more experience i put in hundreds of applications and dont even get a single interview while having more experience

same but im mentally ill and been in psych wards multiple times

I genuinely no longer study or practice anymore. I just apply to like 50-70 jobs each month. Wait for take home tests. Wait for interviews. Thats it. My whole day is taken over by chores and errands. I cant even do my hobbies anymore since December 2025.

create a throwaway mail account and send him am email telling him what you know
the one about him preparing to move cities over a job he's about to lose seems pretty pressing
he should at least be having a serious conversation with his manager or direct report before making such a move
don't tell him "I know you're about to be fired because you suck. be ready". just "I've been told you MAY be one of the people they are preparing to let go soon etc."

To all jobless demoralized hopeless people:
Before you look at post like
>you're underpaid bro
>i make 120k on my first job why are you only making like 75???
>certs certs certs
>projects projects projects
>study study study

Make sure you ask yourself first "how can i even get the offering letter? How do i sell myself?"

I live in third world and everyone under 5 YOE only makes like $1-$2 an hour and even if you have 5 YOE you only make as much $3-$10 an hour. Maybe this is why we're so religious and disregard worldy matters. Because either way we cocksuck our corrupt officials or much richer foreigners/investors while we grovel on dirt.

I dont know about making friends and having relationships / connections and all that. What im saying is if there's no actual pain source like your parents constantly shitting on you no matter what you do, you'll be just fine. I know we're all scared of starving and being homeless or turning 30/40 and still making a minimum wage, but that's a problem for somewhere down the line. Before you're worrying about that, you need to worry about how are tou gonna get an offer letter first.

No one I work with gives a fuck about AI except the one jeet that’s constantly mind-blown/running around showing everyone how great it is

As an indian man I disagree completely.
Actually the entire universe was created for white men in the anglosphere, not indians or anyone else.
So telling them to go is wrong, they have nowhere to go.
You should enlist into the military and carry out your manifest destiny etc, like a real white supremacist.

>create a throwaway mail account and send him am email telling him what you know
anon.. assuming I'm the only one who knows and this guy says something, this would make it obvious to my boss that I told the guy.

>he should at least be having a serious conversation with his manager or direct report before making such a move
I guess this is a good thing to tell him.

> "I've been told you MAY be one of the people they are preparing to let go soon etc."
maybe I could lie to him and tell him that I know they are preparing to fire people or some shit
