i was considering getting these for the function keys on my numpad but it's $200 lol
>>108456980Nobody knows what's going to happen to the MT3 profile, best-case scenario is its tooling becomes publicly available in some way and we see an explosion of MT3 clones or an official adoption by some other keyboard/keycap manufacturer like Keychron or Glorious or whoever the fuck. Worst-case the profile is forever relegated solely to Corsair shilling for the latest Netflix garbage.

I am not sure that the Beatles are 'the greatest band of all time', as their fans seem to think. But I will say this for them: it is a strong signal that they can make such a bold positive claim with confidence. They can say "this band, The Beatles, are the greatest," and it's not trivial to dismiss the claim. If you add together all the people who say "the Beatles are an unremarkable boy band" they may be great in number, but if you were to ask any one of them to say which band *could* hold that preeminent place in the rock 'n roll canon, you would probably get a much more controversial and difficult-to-defend opinion than the one that says The Beatles are the best. Maybe it would be correct, but you could not get the anti-Beatles coalition to rally around it. And this suggests to me that, however overrated they might be, The Beatles must at least be one of the great rock 'n roll bands, if not the greatest.
>>108456561Haven't been looking into this shit for years. Is drop kicking the bucket ?
>>108459920Yes, Drop has officially died, everything is taken down from their store as of midnight last night, they were running flash-sales on everything to try and clear warehouses. This solder sucker sucks huge dick as I feared and I worry that I jumped the gun on my main keyboard PCBs too soon and actively destroyed both already and these switches are impossible to remove. Desolder seals are extremely hit or miss and rapidly become messy. LEDs are no problem, switches though more so.I really should have stuck to my test PCB, why the fuck did I jump to the one of a kind board when hunger, sleep deprivation, and thirst was starting to silently kick in. Fuck me, I hate everything.
>>108467814Alternating between 350-380C and applying lead solder first proves effective, but seriously fuck the sucker. I might have also been jumping the gun way too soon or burnt that white area on the bottom left LEDs because my hands were starting to get shaky from lack of food/water. If I applied some solder first, the heated the pad and pin again and waited 5 seconds it would suck out nicely. Of likewise great concern is the switch pins getting bent or melted though, that was unexpected and I never saw mention anywhere else. LEDs come out easy though. Broke my switch puller trying to push out one of the reds though it wobbles. I am so tired and stressed my head hurts I want to puke.
Fuck, I just remembered I had the flux that was supposed to save me from this bullshit but I forgot to figure out how to open the damn tube or get it out.

>>108469359>Sounds like you failed an INT check honestlyoh definitely. Idk shit about keyboards, thats why I bought a gmmk. They send me instructions to put a tiny bit of iso down the stab to help stop the keys from getting super stuck. I used a needle and poured a few drops, but the keys were still getting stuck, but the key travel started feeling terrible and squeaking. What did I do wrong? What should I have done? I trusted their support, and when I told them hey I followed the instructions but it's still not working they told me sorry you modified it so it's out of warranty. >>108469287can't believe what a fall from grace glorious had, when they were first starting out they were the internet's poster childI remember getting the gmmk and looking back at it, the board is dogshitSuper thin aluminum that you could ben the chassis with very little force, shitty stabs, no cutout for 5 pin switches, etc.And then the whole gmmk pro lineup seemed like a total cashgrab to take advantage of people looking to get into custom boards but couldn't actually do their research first
>>108469628Glorious' niche is/was basically three things>They were the first to have a hotswap keyboard you didn't have to look everywhere to purchase, iirc it was a Tecware Phantom Elite keyboard they bought a bunch of and changed the homework around on>They were the first to have an aluminum chassis keyboard (namely a Satisfaction75 clone what with the knob, exploded arrows and three-key nav cluster) that you could just, you know, buy off the shelf, and didn't have to wait in a group buy for or deal with notorious dodgy QC and no repair path or return path>They support the everloving FUCK out of their products with an ecosystem of accessories. Glass mousepads, ceramic and PTFE mouse feet, switches, keycaps, switch plates, alternative GMMK Pro housings and colorsThat last one is probably their biggest plus, if you need a replacement part from them or want to replace a major part specifically, it's easy to do so and they tout it as a customization feature. You will pay an arm and a leg for it but you can do it and you can get it. The company itself is full of morons (recall they couldn't figure out QMK/VIA for the GMMK Pro, that ended up being the community accomplishing it and not the outsource worker they hired to figure it out "internally") but if you have something from them and you've got cash to splash they will take care of you

Could a flexed PCB be the cause of keys to not register? As in, from a poorly designed not-stiff-enough body bow out along the middle between the raised riser feet? However, the strange thing is I notice that if I remove the key and then blow into the hole in the switch it will temporarily resolve the problem before it decides to fail again at some point. The keys affected are not necessarily the most used, though its often the same handful of keys malfunctioning. It's not even a case of pressing down harder to get it to register, sometimes just holding it down all the way will still take seconds before it starts to stutter and register. I have tested it in various text fields and programs and I'm pretty sure it isn't software related. This board (Akko 5087) is not straightforward to disassemble but I'll do it as a last resort to check every switch.
>>108478874sounds like a QC issue on the board but sometimes it's the switch itselftry it with another switch in the same keyif it works then you'll know it's not the board
>>108479009The problem is that it doesn't always occur and there is no set schedule to when a key decides to act up. But I will have to keep that in mind and see if I can swap switches to test. If blowing on it temporarily relieves the issue then I doubt the result will be very scientific if I'm pulling them out and moving them around.

>>108475930>look it upmy gut instinct tells me aliexpress things just shouldn't cost this much, particularly when ANSI kits are like a quarter of that price
>>108479870The newest ThinkPad keyboards finally ditched this so there's no need to do the BIOS tweak, and if Lenovo was to re-release it with the current layouts it would be a non-issue as well.Question is whether or not they'd carry over the useless Win+Shift+F23 macro button you'd then have to rebind in software to act as the Menu key. Though I guess corporate would be lenient in offering you software to do so since PowerToys is a first party Microsoft project, so it has good validity.
Blacks on Alu only makes sense if the Alu plate is thicc
I want to go in the exact opposite direction. saw an anon here months ago recommending some new keyboard tech, I forget what it was, not membrane but sounded like something similar, main feature is that it was just super quiet.
>>108480351EC switches and topre? They're not new but they are pretty quiet. There's also raeds which are an HE switch that use EC style rubber domes instead of a spring to feel like topre while keeping the advantages of HE.
>>108480531honestly no idea, neither of those sound familiar so I don't think so, I don't believe it was a mechanical keyboard to begin with, so not changeable switches, but who fucking knows. used to use a keyboard with blue switches and blank keycaps to feel like a supernerd, got tired of it after a few years (mainly because the keys were dust magnets). Currently using a logitech k800 just because it's light, wireless and with relatively flush keys so dust isn't a huge problem, but my room setup has changed and the shitty dongle that logitech keyboards use can't handle more than 10ft distance, so now I'm in the market for a new keyboard. It's gotta be bluetooth, full-size and ideally quiet and with as flush keys as possible.
>>108480578When you said quiet and similar to membrane, that's all I could think of. I have no idea then. If you did want full size topre, you could get a realforce but they're expensive.

>>108486468To be clear, desoldering its self is not the issue, its the fucking litter it created. Didn't secure my work area well enough or probably emptied my sucker often enough too, but it would even leak debris through the back.
>>108486468>solder suckerOh, you're desoldering. That can be a real pain, depends on the PCB. Takes a lot of practice to develop the right technique for dealing with the pins that get stuck. Even after switching to a desoldering gun I still don't love desoldering.

>>108487713Guess it'll mostly depend on how much you want the screen (I personally like having a clock on a keyboard for easy glancing) since they're otherwise so similar in feature-set and layout
>>108487870>on how much you want the screenI value the knob and extra buttons more than a screen to be honest, I may find myself turning it off because extra light sources fatigue and distract me and it sucks power when wireless. So I'm kind of undecided now.

>>108488420It's an 1800 with some battleship additions, you work with what you've got
>>108488464>1800I genuinely despise the modern mechanical keyboard market. Anything but to offer a bog standard 100% ANSI, or a 100% ANSI with extra buttons.Welp, time to find a job to pay off that F122 in full then.
>>108488420The Vortex Tab90 is still my favorite keyboard, I don't understand why people have this addiction to mutilating the home/end/page up/page down keys
>>108488494>I don't understand why people have this addiction to mutilating the home/end/page up/page down keysI don't know either. Maybe most people don't understand that there are many people that actually use those daily for navigation, and there's this neat little thing called "muscle memory" that in tandem with a standard ANSI layout leads to an efficient workflow. Then someone decides to shift things around a little because they feel like it's "too ugly" or "too wasteful", or even worse, because they *think* it's "more efficient", only causing pain and suffering to anyone with decades worth of muscle memory training.https://youtu.be/QcGtOsEUPgoIt's also why the only compact keyboards I tolerate are TKL keyboards, as these don't touch anything about the standard ANSI layout but ditching the numpad.Keyboard manufacturers need to be dragged over burning coals until they understand how many people rely on this block of the keyboard being in the same standard as it was since the 80's, and that no, not everyone is so mush brained that it's okay to degrade the beauty of the ANSI keyboard down into the amount of keys you have on a vertical smartphone on-screen keyboard.
>>108488532I don't mind layouts that experiment with rearranging things - to each his own - but I'm eternally baffled when someone chooses to offset the nav cluster and then only include 3 keys. Like, what am I supposed to do, only page down and never up? I can at least understand when they only include 2 keys, since the user can decide whether they want home/end -or- page up/down, but... an odd number? What compels such deviancy?
>>108488572>I don't mind layouts that experiment with rearranging thingsI mind them because they've essentially eradicated traditional layouts from the market. Everyone has to experiment, everyone has to "quirk things up", and I'm sick and fucking tired of it.Going back to making 104-key ANSI bases with standard three status LED's would be great for example, and I'd consider it the same type of historical moment as Microsoft daring to admit in any capacity that Windows 11 is flawed and needs to be fixed, even if indirectly. If Microsoft was able to do this much, then keyboard manufacturers can go back to the drawing board and release something that's a 104-key with three status LED's. Like the Model M, or any standard office keyboard. It's not that fucking hard, and the amount of people who go for WoB keycaps instead of all the "quirked up" artisan bullshit should be a sign that people had enough quirks and want a balance between new tech and old design conventions.
>>108488647Keyboards have such a lower barrier to manufacturer entry than something like Windows, and the market is clearly able to support a diversity of designs - you even mentioned earlier that you know of at least one keyboard model that meets your criteria, but were hopeful there was a more reasonably priced alternative.Personally, as long as the designer is making rational decisions when weighing competing design goals (ex. "more keys means less layering" vs. "less keys means reduced manufacturing cost and increased ergonomics/portability"), I think the only way for us to find out whether certain ideas work is to give it a shot. And people like me, who really love one esoteric design that no-one else has ever delivered, benefit from allowing that creativity. (I just don't understand why designers keep using 3-keys and the offset nav cluster... like, just go to either 2 keys or 4 keys, what the fuck are you doing.)I see your point though that designers chasing fads and trends leaves people who just want "the thing that we already know works fine and that we're comfortable with" potentially without good/affordable options. I think it's just the reality of the market that not many people want 100%+ keyboards, and you're forced to pay a premium for niche features.
>>108488693I think the real issue is that I'm a 25 year old fossil, while the entire world has been consumed by smartphones. I still rely on a desktop PC. I still rely on Windows software. I still rely on utilizing a full-sized keyboard. This is what I grew up with, this is what I've engrained myself in, this is what I'm most efficient with.To me, a keyboard is a crucial tool for human input, not an accessory. Meanwhile most people use smartphones where you lack most of the keys that you'd want to have at a computer. I use Unexpected Keyboard on my phone because it's much closer to a computer keyboard, but 99% of people use this, and it seems like all these custom mechanical keyboards try to drift as close to this as possible, which is why designers and manufacturers are so allergic to staying true to the decades old standard established by IBM.
>>108459107>that mouseabsolute soul>>108468374I had one with red switches 5 or 6 years ago. never again. within the first week keypresses not registering already. awful hollow metal ding sound while typing on a solid wood desk. even a big mouse pad underneath didn't help. Lots of "miniscule" issues like that accumulated very quickly. hate that brand and keyboard ever since.better build something yourself. more upfront cost but lasts far longer. if you need a change of scenery, you can always hotswap the switches or caps if you feel like it. chinaware like reddragon dont have that luxury, at least the one I had didn't. returned it ASAP.

As for what's out there now that you could buy today, I don't know. TTC Silent Bluish Whites sound pretty similar to Lichicx, although they're not particularly new (2023ish). I have a regular Bluish White (just one switch lol, came in a tester pack) which is silenced on bottom-out only (the "silents" are silenced on both ends) and it's not a bad bottom-out.
