>creates the perfect system for a FOSS set-top box / console>"actually this is just for emulating 90s games">doesn't even maintain half the coresSo much wasted potential, and the only alternatives are Kodi which I've grown to hate and plasma bigscreen that keeps getting abandoned.
>>108458446>this is just for emulating 90s gamesRetroArch can, and is, used for things other than 90s games. You can develop any game to use the RetroArch frontend.I don't understand what you mean.>doesn't even maintain half the coresThere's only so much hands. The ideal scenario is that the emulator developers themselves maintain the cores, and many do.The remaining are maintained by libretro, but what do you expect of half a dozen guys?
>>108458446no games after the 90s worth playing besides morrowind and it runs all those perfectly so who needs more updooooots
>>108458497More apps, video features and asset management capabilities. For example it should be possible to have an embedded browser to load youtube.com/tvI also see some cores are just launchers for external apps, why not fork gamescope to run them through retroarch?I don't think this is a problem of retroarch itself, apart from maybe the branding signaling it's just for retro gaming. I just think it could be much more than it is right now.
>>108458629Bro it's for retro games why do you want to watch YouTube on it? You're fucking retarded.
>>108458446>>108458629it already has an ffmpeg core and you can use it to watch local media, the youtube shit you're talking about though is retarded.>doesn't even maintain half the coresthey're all working fine outside of the ps2 core which is still new
>>108461286How is it retarded? I'm talking about how it could be used outside of gaming as a standard bigscreen environment because the only other options are,>plasma bigscreenBorderline abandonedware and part of the KDE ecosystem>kodiBloated and focused more on media
>>108458629>why can't retroarch play youtube?>Why can't it browse the web???You are literally the problem with ALL modern software
>>108461435Brother I'm just suggesting an intuitive foss solution to play a podcast on my TV while I cook dinner.
>>108458446Why should I bother with this when I can keep an emulator exe in the same folder with all the games
>>108461612youre an idiothttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phlox.tvwebbrowser
>>108458446Listen, normie. Don't show up and start ruining things right away.If you want to turn RA into some Nintendo switch SaaS model, you doing a good job starting these shitty threads
does an emulator really NEED proprietary """""cores"""""???seems like an architectural problem to me
>>108461836>>108461868>>108461911"hmm, We have Linux for the desktop and netbooks. Linux mobile is being developed. We could also use an interface for TVs and this project has laid some groundwork.">WRYYYY YOU WANT TO TURN MY HECKIN GOYBOY EMULATOR INTO A NETFLIX STOREFRONT?
>>108461825Convenience once it's set up. It's a pain in the ass at first because the gui is aids but once you get past that you've got a nice menu with all of your emulators and roms in one place, streamlined update management, loads of options for configuration. It's like MAME for console games.
>>108458497is 2026 and still no one knows how a cathode ray tube renders things on the screen
>>108461911Yes because emudevs can't figure out AV sync or shaders.
>>108463158Apparently we do, as we have programmatically simulated them with shader code to incredible levels of accuracy.
>>108458446It's really good for NES, SNES and N64 and GB, GBA, NDS and now even 3DS because the devs maintain their own core. And Ps1 is alright + PSP is also maintained by the original Dev. Ps2/GC and above need standalone.
>>108458446don't mind me just installing retroarch
>>108466655You just have trouble in your first time setup, specially for playlists. After that just backup the folders and replace everything in a new installation.
What really irks me is that if you install the native distro package for Retroarch, the default folder for cores is only writable by root.....
>>108466679don't mind me just updating retroarch
That's actually genius. Kodi is such a piece of shit.
>>108464997This is one of the main reasons why RetroArch started. It was the only one with proper VSync while keeping audio intact.
>>108458446> Emudeck Solved this problem for me. Retroarch is great but I just want to gayme. Way too much configuration
>>108466709Yeah, on Arch this seems to be the case.I just changed them in the config to point to directories in my user home.
>>108466902>portable>download zip>replaceOr just use stelarhttps://github.com/StellarUpdater/Stellar
>>108467484don't mind me just installing Stellar
>>108466709RA is unpackageable. Just use the flatpak or build from source.
>>108466635What's wrong with the PS2 core? I've logged probably 25 hours with it over the last few weeks and haven't noticed any issues.
>>108463158Just emulate on a real CRT TV.
>>108467739>>108466902>>108466655Just donate to patreon, retard.
Is it a meme or are people really too dumb to install and use RetroArch?
>>108466709I noticed this too. Then when I tried the AppImage it couldn't play videos. The Flatpak is the only release that actually works.
>>108468258I guess it's mostly fine, I just read the last update was in Jan, 2025.
>>108469787g will never not fail to learn something and create insane justifications for it
>>108458446I ove RetroArch, how it keeps all my ROMs in one place to play, the beautiful and nostalgic XMB, and its shaders... I love it.
>>108470139Same here. I also use XMB. It's perfect for use on a TV with a controller.Your shader is a bit blurry tho.>>108469991>>108468192>FlatpakHow do you guys manage RetroArch config files in that case?Do you have a directory on your home that the Flatpak can access?
The good thing about retroarch is that it made those cheap but cool emulation handhelds possible, like r36s. I picked up one of those for £15 and it's amazing what you get for the price. I used to hate retroarch because it was painful to configure, but playing with it on my r36s made me love it
>>108470139Same, I want everything to have an XMB interface. Not even for nostalgia, I never owned a PS3. It's just intuitive, straightforward and pretty.>>108472212True
>>108472122I know, it's on purpose though, I like the fake "glow" effect and being a bit more blurry creates the illusion of softness and more definition for me.>>108472307Indeed.
>>108472122>How do you guys manage RetroArch config files in that case?It keeps them in ~/.var/app/org.libretro.RetroArch/config/retroarch/ instead of ~/.config/retroarch. Management is the same otherwise.>Do you have a directory on your home that the Flatpak can access?I just run filesystem=host because I like to live dangerously. You can add however many individual directories under flatseal.
>>108469757don't mind me just donating to patreon
>>108473491>I like the fake "glow" effectFair enough!>>108473629Got it.
>>108458590>no games after the 90s worth playingalmost none
>>108458446>Oh my! No PS3 or Xbox 360? The APP is literally useless! >WHERE IS THE EXE?!?!? AND UNLIMITED ISO DOWNLOADS??? PROVIDE THEM! REEEEEEEEEE
>>108470139>>108472212This but with CRTs. It's the only frontend usable on a 15kHz CRT TV.
