I picked up a couple of x300 before prices went nuts are they really that bad?
>>
>>108458632
We were supposed to have mass market 8-14TB SSD's available at a similar cost per terabyte to hard drives by now. The high-pitch whining and buzzing can only be mitigated by be quiet! cases so much.
>>108458655
No, but a be quiet! case is an absolute necessity in my opinion if you get annoyed by HDD vibration buzzing easily, 10 KHz whine may vary depending on your tolerance. These drives are beasts and will serve well but they are not designed with quiet in mind, they are much like old school hard drives.
>>
>>108458632
hey grandpa here in the future we use NVME drives. take your 1970s tech and shove it up your ass

here in the present we cant afford either

Yeah sure thing kiddo. Go back to sleep.

Oh yeah I have one and it's pretty loud. I'd still rather have this than the infamous 3TB barracuda it replaced after it died.

be quiet case often utilize thick insulation foam and restricted panels that can lead to higher internal temperatures compared to mesh-fronted "high-airflow" cases.

yes its known as the 2.5" U.2 form factor. when was your last computer lesson, 1983?

kek i have two 16tb toshibas in my NAS and it sounds like a MG nest when its being written to, good times.
>>
>>108458701
The Dark Base 900 I have has excellent thermals with an extra front fan, one bottom intake, and one top intake and exhaust comparable to my HAF 932. But it is a leakier design than the Pure Base 600. Still tolerable on my desk.

Prices went nuts for HDD's.

In may 2025, i paid like 360 Euros for aToshiba MG10 20TB
On 22nd december 2025 a 20TB MG10 would have cost me 491 Euros ...

Good luck affording 100tb on NVMEs.

motherboards barely even have as much as 3 NVME slots, while I can connect 10x or more SATA devices.
>>
>>108458918
I have a case which can house 9 hard drives, I think I will use the feature I paid for.
>>
>>108458992
its fuckin insane, i paid £439 for two 14tb versions last year, they are now £380 each
>>
>>108458632
I just bought one for full system backups and the sound caught me off guard lmao. My case has enough dampening material not to hear it spinning but the seek sounds are so loud and deep compared to my old seagate. I only spin it up once a week so it's no big deal.
>>
>>108458992
Got 12 disks a few years ago, thinking I'll buy one or two backup disks in case my pool freaks out. Guess I'll live dangerously for a while, no way I'm paying these prices for HDDs.
>>
>>108459076
You can use an m.2 to pcie adapter, I think you need ~4 pcie (4.0 at least) lanes to match the theoretical max speed of most drives, if ur board supports bifurcation you can use a full x16 for 4 m.2s

I've got an X300 and an MG20 and they're fine.
>>

It seems to vary per-drive somehow. I bought two to put in RAID1 in my desktop. Set up the first one, whisper quiet. Set up the second one and mirrored the data, WHRRRR BT BT BT TKTKTKTKTK RBRRRRRR every time I open a folder on them
>>
>>108460500
The high pitch idle noise from OP is more annoying IMO
>>
>>108459045
>i am confused sven steinersson
Here it weil get even more confusing:
My real name is actually Sven, i'm german, live in Germany and i'm not a swede but i speak Swedish.
That's why my computer's OS is in swedish. Hence the filename

>>108459300
>its fuckin insane, i paid £439 for two 14tb versions last year, they are now £380 each
Yes, it's actually insane. I have put any plans on purchasing HDD's on a total halt.

>>108459358
>Got 12 disks a few years ago, thinking I'll buy one or two backup disks in case my pool freaks out. Guess I'll live dangerously for a while, no way I'm paying these prices for HDDs.
Ecactly my reasoning also.
Except i'm going for a non-RAID solution with my DAS 10-Bay HDD towers (pic related)

My 300 got more quiet over time. Or maybe I got used to it.
>>
>>108458632
Are there any high capacity drives that are quiet, specifically at idle? The WD ones thump hard every 5 seconds for their PWL "feature". I've ordered two Seagates in my life and they both arrived DOA. Thinking of trying Toshiba, their N300 and X300 (and their pro variants) are all listed as 20 Db, so that seems quiet.
>>
>>108458632
Which model do you have?
The Helium filled ones are all 20 dB, whereas air goes up to 34 dB. The ones <= 10 TB are air.

Ok Spacelet.
>>108459358
The prices are never coming down.
>>
>>108458701
Airflow vs dampening only matters for high performance systems like gaming and rendering boxes. For something like a fileserver the better noise dampening is going to be much better for noise than more airflow. Buy a Fractal D7.

>With 4+ bays i'd want thunderbolt and or USB4.
Good luck finding a 10-Bay HDD tower with USB4 or Thunderbolt that gives you the function of turning on or off each HDD individually. No such thing on the market.
>>
>>108461770
not so much about speed but rather how shoddy the average usb sata controller is
>>
>>108461780
>not so much about speed but rather how shoddy the average usb sata controller is
I never had any issues with data loss or corruption or something. But i know there were older SATA to USB controllers that had issues with partitions with more than 4TB or that could not resolve certain letters in a filename.

I have everything from 8TB to 32TB HDD's in these towers and never had any issues. Yet so far, every HDD i put in them work perfectly fine.

The best computer modification I ever did was to relocate everything to a closet in the middle of the house and only extend I/O to the rooms to access it. I don't think about noise or heat or how it looks at all. USB and HDMI are good for about 25' without repeaters.

I have had several people tell me "they aren't that loud" Those people, they were all lying it turns out. Or deaf. Or simply did not care.
>>108458655
It's not just the loudness it's the sound in particular just awful.
>>
>>108475579
The idle noise or the write/seek? Sound sensitivity is very difficult to compare, lots of different factors and it even comes down the ways our brains work. A lot of blacks for instance actually cannot hear the smoke alarm chirp, whereas it'd drive a lot of autistic insane. I'm much better at dealing with a constant white-noise from a fan than a periodic sound.

Anyways, we can compare relatively. 7200 is usually a lot louder than 5400. I have two old 5400s in my tower and I barely notice them, it's time to upgrade them soon, hopefully SSD will increase in size and drop in price.

Retarded take of yours.
If i compare the Toshibas i have and they're ranging from 16 to 28TB from the MG series, they are ALL OF THEM less noisy than their Seagate Exos and Iron Wolf pro counterparts of varying capacities.
So what are we actually talking about here?

If you weak fucks can't stomach HDD's spinning and accessing YOUR data, then sell your computer and transition into a fucking phone faggot. But for the sake of it, stop posting here.
Or shell out the millions you'll need to get a server running with SSD's only. But either way, stop complaining like a homo.

Yeah and then you remember that $/€ / TB is a metric more important than density for everyone that isn't a FAGMAN tier cloud provider and then you remember that larger than 4TB SSDs were already orders of magnitude away from being competitive before they hiked prices and delivery times up x20.
>>
>>108470184

>>
>>108478160

No, they are still TLC or so. They just have a 3.5" drive chock full of chips, while your m.2 has maybe a single chip.
