Implessive, vely naisu.

Based off the screenshot, I assume the WM is Fruxbox? What other system components did you make use of to make it low resource?

Is it possible to just read through archives of old desktop threads and use what everyone was using back in the day, assuming those resources are still maintained today?

I also just remembered that I used to read it like 20 years ago. Found this while looking for info:

TheMegatokyocontroversyprimarily centers on the 2005 departure of co-creatorRodney Caston, who was accused by fellow webcomic creator Scott Kurtz of being "blackmailed" out of the project, a claim Gallagher dismissed as anamicable splitdue to creative differences.A second major controversy emerged regarding theMegaTokyo Visual NovelKickstarter campaign, which raised nearly$300,000in 2013 but has remainedunfinishedsince 2017, leading to accusations of mismanagement and an inability to complete the promised project.Longstanding criticism also targets the comic'snarrative pacing, which slowed to a crawl (covering onlytwo monthsof in-universe time from 2000–2009), and its shift from slapstick comedy toemotional dramaandmisogynistic tropes, including storylines involvingchild prostitutionand the objectification of female characters.

I also got reminded of the Sexy Losers web comic. Las update was in 2025 I think.

Yeah, I knew about largo getting driven out of the comic because he wanted it to be funny and piro wanted to make a weeb drama.
Only covering two months in-universe in 9 years is funny. Here I'd thought Initial D was slow - in-universe starts in July 1995 and ends in the fall of 1996 and it took 18 years to get there. (July 1995-July 2013). I also was amused by the anachronisms that occurred cause it took so long to write - it went from no characters having cellphones to all characters having flip phones, cars that weren't in production in 1996 are used by featured characters (Toyota Altezza, Honda S2000, Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R)

it's weird looking back how much screen real estate was considered acceptable to lose to window decorations and the gaps inherent to freeform floating wm layouts
sometimes I feel like a jackass ricer "wasting" 20-30px to i3-gaps on a 27" 1440p monitor, but most of the screenshots itt are probably from sub-20" monitors at lower pixel densities! And yeah, they're showing off their theme and wouldn't have that many tiny windows opened and spread across the desktop normally, but it's still a very fundamentally different approach to enthusiast UI customization
>>
>>108462053
i doubt you'll answer but can you post about how you set this up? i assume window manager plays a role? i tried using it but i get the feeling it's impossible to daily drive on its own and maybe requires further apps to make it work
>>
>>108461828
pretty good case desu no bullshit glass or RGB faggotry modern thermals 5.25inch bays just a shame about the price
>>
It makes me sad that the main thing with these are the low resolution, 3D "skeuomorphic" details and bitmap fonts. Even on Linux these details and fonts are basically cat and mouse game where you fight against updates and config changes. The other 50% of the problem is that I use three 42" OLED monitors with 3840x2160 so even these old desktops would not look the same because of the high resolution and large desktop space. Basically showing screenshots to others would just look extremely tiny and doesn't have the same feel.

My compromise is to larp Windows 7 desktop with Liberation font set with my custom theme and icons that is 3D. It basically has the same feel but still it looks weird and too tiny when you show triple monitor 4K screenshots to others.

3x 42" monitors is legit the ideal godmaxxing setup

I have one myself and while its great with my 24" vertical monitor, I do wish I just had more area at times. I wanted VR to replace my monitors but the industry is too slow with PPD, and 3 chonkers irl would be a close 2nd

I actually cant wait to get a 42" 8k display so I can have 3 monitors

Back in windows xp you can change color depth so i hope it is possible in Linux like 16 colors

nta, but segmented lcd displays are objectively better/visually more distinct for numerals

and at this stage in the tech tree, they get extra points for "nostalgia"

I daily drive this and use it for work, school, and devving.
I use this on a laptop.
I know everything I need to know from my dockapps (time, wifi, stats, temp, tray, moon, audio, etc)
It's very lightweight.
>maybe requires further apps to make it work
Maybe if you consider the dockapps as 'further apps', but after that, no, it's pretty nice

I'll upload my config somewhere for people to enjoy after I finish up something.

like half of the games in that screenshot are commercially released Loki Entertainment ports, and id and a few other devs were generally pretty good about including Linux binaries in their own releases. The early 2000s were kind of a little golden age for native Linux gaming before the dark ages of the late 00s-10s era, at least before Wine/Proton got mature enough to solve the issue for good.

A lot of screen space was lost, yes, but, it ensured all elements were defined and clearly noticeable. For example, the screenshot you posted you can clearly make out all the elements in the UI.
Many of the interfaces back then might be ugly, but they were very easy to use.
