>Sony Group Corp. is nearing a binding agreement to sell a majority stake in its home entertainment business to Chinese rival TCL Electronics Holdings Ltd. in a deal that may be valued at about $1 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.
How will this affect the TV market?

i'm never buying a fucking sony again that's for sure i don't care how many colors they've got

My friend was talking about this. Basically they're buying the Bravia brand. It'll be shared for now but I'm sure they'll fully buy it in the near future. Meaning no more Japanese Sony TVs. I know they're all made in China, but they were designed and engineered in Japan. All we will have left are Korean and Chinese TVs. It also sounds like it's a go around so Sony doesn't have to buy LG panels. TCLAnd Hisense are already a brand on the US, usually known as being the budget/lower quality brand. But display technology now is so cheap and advanced that it doesn't even matter anymore. Personally my last TV was a Toshiba (it still works and looks great) but I moved on to projectors now. Maybe some day I'll get an LG OLED but movies and TV on a huge projector screen just feels right.
>>
>>108465754
i don't care as much where it's made it's just if it said sony bravia (or really sony anything) i knew it was high quality and i didn't have to think that hard but it seems every quality brand eventually turns to shit so they can collect one more payday from people like me who don't want to hyperanalyze every purchase
>>
>>108465764
These "Sony" TVs were already made in China. This will change nothing other than "Sony Bravia" -> "Bravia" or "TCL Bravia"
>>
>>108465826
i guarantee it gets worse the second they control the business
>>
>>108465849
100%. What set Japanese companies apart was the Total Quality Control culture, based on Edward Deming's statistical quality control system of the same/similar name. Chinese companies could make good stuff, but their quality control is atrocious even at the high-end so the variance in quality is all over the place. Hell even Hong Kong and Taiwanese shit has mediocre quality control at best. Just look at the slew of garbage windows laptops. You pay $3000 for shit that's built like a plastic toy. They need someone in charge of them rejecting the garbage.
>>
>>108465764
Yeah that's what my friend was saying. When you hear "Sony" you knew it was quality. Personally I know Sony has had a lot of shitty devices/consoles/movies, but at the same time they were still pretty good. Especially their audio/video stuff. My CD Walkman from 30 years ago still works and sounds great. Grabbing some cheap $20 travel Song headphones still sound amazing. But yeah, once TCL fully buys them then it's probably over. Its like when the Koreans/Chinese bought Zenith and Sylvania from the US/Canadian market.

>>108465826
The internals and operating system were still designed by Sony. They will continue to be made that way until TCL buys out the entire Bravia brand, which I'm sure will take place in the next 5 years.
>>
>>108465895
>>108465849
Nah, Japan is importing Indian engineers. If anything, it's likely that Japanese tech is going to get worse than all other East Asian economies.
>>
>>108465764
>i knew it was high quality
You must have not touched a bravia in the past decade
Mine died literally right past the warranty.

Panasonic have unloaded their TVs to China not too long ago too so that's the two best brands gone now, although too be fair Panasonic had been on a bit of a downslope for the last couple of years. Not sure what I'd buy if I were to replace my LZ1500 now.

I bought my mother a TCL Mini LED TV for Christmas and have been very impressed with it. The picture is fantastic after some tweaking by me and it has Google TV rather than some random smart TV system with no apps. Sony's comparable offerings are all shitty edge or direct lit sets. You have to spend almost twice as much to get one of their Mini LED ones. No wonder nobody buys them.

that's like nothing in 2026 globohomo bucks though

how's that CERAMICS industry, bro
>>
honestly though it should be illegal to sell off a brand name, it misleads customers who think they're buying a brand that was quality 20 years ago but is now owned by a chink shit manufacturer
>>
Now that I've had my TCL miniled monitor for a bit over a month, I wouldn't be against buying a nice big miniled tv from them as well.
>>
>>108465826
>These "Sony" TVs were already made in China.
TCL, Hisense, etc. have abysmal quality control. With a foreign company breathing down their necks, you can get quality from China. But without it's a crapshoot.

When it comes to miniLED there's no doubt TCL is in the lead. Sony has favoured miniLED over OLED so the deal makes sense. TCL want Sony's motion processor too. It makes sense on all fronts. People should stop fearmongering over this. It makes sense for each company.

How's the monitor by the way?

Every dollar you send to China funds communist Chinese gov and military takeover of Taiwan

it fucks with my head that a global tv brand is valued less than instagram was 15 years ago

Sony tvs have dogshit smart tv software that fails randomly and constantly anyway. They're the HP of televisions.

They haven't been communist since like 1980 when they were all starving. They have state capitalism, essentially just modified fascism.

Japan is a poor, 3rd world country nowadays, get over it. They don't even have the manpower to do that shit since it's mostly expats who work at factories, and those people are not Japanese and couldn't care less about their shit.

Why are indians so smart?
>>
Fucking crazy, first Panasonic exits the market, now Sony.

Samsung and LG are going to be the only non chinese panel makers at this rate. And even they are getting behind, chinese are pushing miniled panels like crazy.

Sony's been selling off pieces for a while. They spun off and sold most of their Financial Services aka the most profitable part of the business as well.

Partially divesting a big investment/small profit business like consumer TVs makes sense from a business perspective.
Currently their moneymakers are Games, Music, and Image Sensors. With this they're trying to make the ET&S division more profitable by offloading consumer displays, probably focusing on the higher margin professional market.

Incredible. I don't have an oled here to side by side it but it looks great. Definitely mogs my cheaper aoc miniled with almost 1/8 the dimming zones.
>>
>>108472600
The Japs were arrogant and refused to adapt. It doesn't help that your average goy only sees size and price. Actual image quality is irrelevant to your average boomer since all they watch is the news anyways.
>>
Sony quality has been on a downhill track for half a decade. Surprised this didn't happen earlier. They were being outcompeted by competitors in reliability, image quality, software, all of it. No wonder only a Chinese company is willing to buy the already shit brand from them.

>Be sony
>Sell their kids profitable business
>Do nothing during PS4 with original games and just kick back collecting royalties
>By the end of the PS4 lifespan all shit devs are going Games as a Service crap so there's less units to sell and more free to start shit
>Sony suffers and decides to put games on PC
>Barely anyone wants that movie slop
>Raises prices of PS+ and hardware

This board and site as a whole has been dead for years.

But truthfully this whole topic doesn't matter much. Even back when I worked electronics retail a decade ago we already knew Sony didn't make any of the panels for their TVs. The only thing they had and still have is the processing which is still at the top but their massive lead from years ago has been shrinking. 90% of the actual improvements in TV tech is done by the hardware OEMs with mini-LED and derivative tech, so TCL taking half of their business is already being lenient on Sony.
