Is there such a thing as a bluetooth or usb connected macro pad that i can connect to my win11 laptop and use without begging IT to install any software for me
basically looking for a USB numpad but automatically sends “ctrl-shift-1” when i press “1” so it triggers a keyboard shortcut. Or if such a thing has a touchscreen that would work too.

Why do LUKS and Veracrypt don't have stuff implemented like
>every time you enter a wrong password it doubles the time you have to wait before you can try again
or even better
>after 10 tries it deletes itself(deleting encryption keys/corrupting data)
to protect you from local brute force attacks?

I imagine you can't bake that functionality into the encrypted data itself so nothing stops someone from making an interface that doesn't delete the data after 10 tries, and even if you could, someone could mess with the data to reset the 10 tries or make it something like 9999999999 or so since it'd have to be written there somewhere, but I'm just guessing idk much about this stuff
>>
>>108467322
If you store the key in a TPM module you can do that, then you use a password to unlock the key from the module which is smart enough to detect bruteforce attempts.

I'm getting a new monitor and I'm on the fence about dropping an extra $150 over what I'd otherwise spend to get something that can do (ok, but not great) hdr. facing a weird situation right now
ISP replaced my gateway today since it was rebooting itself so often, so naturally I lost all my static ip settings (yeah yeah I know I am a poorfag and cant afford a router for bridge mode)
The thing is now device visibility on LAN is strange when it used to work just fine
I got a PC (ethernet), a laptop (wifi), Phone A (wifi) and Phone B (wifi) in the LAN
>PC can ping all other devices just fine and viceversa
>laptop can ping and see every device EXCEPT phone A
>phone A can ping and see every device EXCEPT laptop
I thought it was something about wifi device isolation or something at first but nope, it just happens exclusively between phone A and the laptop. Both are invisible to each other. I have no clue what's going on, they are all on the same network and subnet of course. nmap doesn't detect laptop from Phone A and viceverse. ARP fails between each other. Ping just says "Destination host unreachable" when pinged from each other
laptop is running Fedora and phone is running HyperOS 3 (Poco X7). Before the gateway replacement, I could ping and see the laptop and phone from each other.
What the hell is going on?
>>
>>108468916
if this is a windows laptop, try setting the network to private instead of public. windows will default any new network to public (including if the ssid is the same but the network hardware changed), which turns off discoverability and applies a different, stricter set of firewall rules.

Yes, of course. There are "Osu pads" that are basically a few buttons and maybe a knob and a little screen that are pretty programmable. I myself have a wireless numpad with macro buttons that are changed with a webapp. Keycron Q0 I think it is?

Why the fuck does Spotify drain so much battery? I'll typically use SBC on my earbuds at 160kbps and stream via wireless data (mind you, I'm subscribed to Premium so I've downloaded the playlists I listen to the most) and it'll drain like 20% in an hour for some reason. Average drain per hour is 10%-12% so this is really abnormal. I figured maybe it's streaming them regardless if I have them downloaded or not, so I turned on offline mode and yet the issue remains. One odd thing I also noticed is that streaming music to my car stereo via Bluetooth (AAC) for about an hour drains maybe 5%-8% of my battery which doesn't make sense. What the hell's going on here?

Is there a calendar client for Windows 10 and/or Android that has reminder notifications WITH images?

I have a Baikal server with a CalDAV calendar .ics that I exported. I intend to fill it with the data from here https://touhoucalendar.github.io/, where the days would have an all-day event whenever it coincides with a given date.
For instance on 9th September the title would be "Cirno Day", with an image of Cirno in the description as well as the explanation included on the site. I know the site doesn't have images but since I'm adding all the days manually so I'll add the image anyway.

The key requirement is having the image shown in the notification itself and (if possible) a bit of the description, which may be cut off with ellipses.
>Thunderbird
In the calendar tab you can't even add an image to an event.
>Outlook
It's possible to add images to calendar events' descriptions, but the reminder notification itself doesn't have them displayed unless I open the meeting item itself, the whole process of which is just clunky and is specifically what I'm trying to avoid.
>Discord / Twitter
They have a bot which announces dates at https://x.com/TouhouCalendar, same goes to Discord bot, but I don't use either of these.
>Windows Notification Center
Integrated with the old W10 Mail app which is depreciated, not to mention that adding images is not possible.

Now worst case for me is that I drop the idea of "show Image in the notification itself" and just keep the image in the description, but please let me know if it's somehow possible.
I'm hoping for solutions for both Windows 10 and Android. Thunderbird had potential, but kind of disappointing that you can't add images at all.

I would believe the daughter board flex cable goes to the mobo from under the battery and connects between the green marked screws you show here. I'd guess screwing in those screws is messing with the flex connection due to age, so it misaligns just enough to be fucked when pushed down by the bracket your screw in. Releasing tension lets it work again, for now.

In any case, phone is on death row less you care to replace things.

My monitor backlight is failing on one side, started happening a few days ago. Thought it was a graphics card issue at first because it would work again after restarting my pc a few times. Today I learned it's definitely the monitor because it happens during the monitor power screen and in bios.
I dont know why it would fix itself and then run for hours just fine, but now I cant seem to fix it at all. Fiddling with cables, trying display port and hdmi, unplugging the monitor, power cycling it, etc. Nothing working for over 30 minutes now. I even tried some percussive maintenance by slapping that side a few times.

The worst part is, it will start up fine, then go half black in less than 3 seconds. And it ran for like 20 hours yesterday without going out at all. What the fuck is this things deal? How can I fix this without buying a new monitor?
>>
>>108471534
Somehow I managed to get it to fix itself again. The weird thing is, this will run for the next 16 hours flawlessly. I will turn it off when I leave the house to go to work and when I come home it will be fucked again when I turn my PC on.

Surely it can't be a graphics card or driver issue right? Because again, it happens on the MSI monitor boot up screen, which appears even when you don't have a PC plugged in. It isn't loose cables either, everything is tight as fuck. So what the hell is happening? How can the backlight be broken, to the point that 60% of my screen is pitch black, but then magically "restore" itself to it's normal brightness for HOURS (it even continues to work even if I move my monitor around, so the likelihood is the inside of the monitor doesn't have any loose bits either). How does something break and then continue to function flawlessly as long as I never turn my PC off? I've never seen a single failing PC component magically restore itself after a few failed attempts and then work fine as long as you never turn off the power. It just doesn't make sense. I'd rather not leave my PC running whenever I'm not home or sleeping, but at this point until I can get a new monitor I just have to I guess.

So i got a new smart watch and I need a image for the background for the custom watch face. Apparently you can get 40+ days of battery life on one charge and to maximize the battery, a light background is best. Bold numbers with light background is best for battery and low light visibility of the time/date.
My question is: should I start a request for watch faces here .

I was thinking of clouds in front of a cerulean blue sky. AI and the watch manual states the image should be 280x280 pixels, so an hd source would be helpful. I think the face app thing does the shaping but 280x280 is best for clean images.
Should i start a watchc thread? smart watch.
Thanks in advance.

Very stupid question but how do I clean my scroll wheel? It's full of cat hair but I can't for the life of me find what component exactly I need to clean.

It is a x11 Attack Shark.

I learned how to open the mouse up, but then it feels like the cat hair is deeply ingrained under some sort of "box" that is supposed to be the encoder.

Most encoders are like a mini-wheel attached to the larger scroll wheel. In my mouse's case there is no such mini-wheel. I don't know what is going on or what I'm supposed to do.

The bottom one is dual rank (the 2Rx8) so probably that one. But I doubt it'll make a significant difference and they will likely perform around the same.
That said, 4gb is a very small amount, is this for a home server or something? 8gb or more will significantly increase performance for most tasks as the system will be less memory constrained.

could anyone give me a starting point (or tell me i'm retarded and there's an easier way i'm not thinking of) for building an image classification system, what i'm hoping for is to go image -> system -> score, and I can "train" it somewhat based on my preferences and run locally.

I'm hoping to integrate this into a tool I have for browsing websites to automatically hide women's profiles that I'm very unlikely to be interested in as the search function is ass.
Not really looking for accuracy on a specific score, more to remove the hucows and 50 year olds from the pool but if it works better than that its a plus.

The quest 3 is a no brainer if you don't currently have a VR headset and aren't just filthy rich or something.
Its cheap and not that far away from a triple+ price headset anymore, the top end of consumer VR is not really that top end, janky as fuck after years still.
If you end up really really into VR and playing it every day or something you can upgrade later and sell it on for a reasonable portion.

It has a huge market share so you'll prob not run into as many issues with games or compatibility. The downside is you're locked into the facebook ecosystem, which is a deal breaker for some, but for me its worth the trade offs.
Their customer service is documented well as being among the worst, even before it was just an ai chatbot. I'd buy it from somewhere that has good returns if you end up having issues with it.

How to be better at using spreadsheets?
I know it's not hard inputting data, but how to make good use of it with functions and pivot tables and representing those with charts and doing some math shit to get the best for my needs.

You get better at using spreadsheets the same way you get better at anything else.

Using and learning it's upsides and downsides, trying to fix errors and looking for ways to achieve what you want out of the software. There is no magic, there is no secret sauce, just use and learn the tools at your hand.

i've had it only SHOW half my RAM but that was when the RAM wasn't properly seated.

maybe the system is using some of the memory, or it's 'reserved' or whatever Windows calls it? also it'll be running Services (check the 'Services' tab in Task Manager) which is basically Windows' name for daemons.

and PROTIP: make sure you're looking at that 'Details' tab for your programs too, which is basically the old Task Manager before they made the babby simplified version that doesn't actually tell you everything.

you could try converting it to something zeal understands. I don't see much advantage in doing this over just hosting a copy of the site yourself, but I guess you have your reasons.
If that reason is just that you want the reading to be distraction free, consider hosting a copy yourself and create a locked down browser that is firewalled to your LAN

Every time I go to a board it seems like it takes forever for the first page to load. I don't mean for the page to load in I mean for it to load so 4chanx is usable. If I open a thread then it'll work after a second or two which is the norm. On the first page it's more like 30 seconds to a minute.
Anyone else having this problem?

Also for some reason every time I try to download a torrent it's like my speed has been throttled to about 25kbs or it won't start at all. One or two I could say fair enough, but it's every single one.

Even though there's essentially zero code in this thing and most of the work gets done in Blender and Photoshop, am I "supposed" to use an IDE to package all this into the final .zip? Like, is it "unprofessional" to handle everything in my file browser?

Firefox is still just that tho, browser interfaces are pretty simple

you can disable some new stuff in about:config:
"browser.tabs.groups.enabled" for tab groups
"browser.tabs.splitView.enabled" for splitview
"sidebar.revamp" for the new sidebar (disabling the new sidebar in settings toggles this too)
"browser.tabs.hoverPreview.enabled" for tab hover previews
There is now a settings menu for the ai stuff if you wanna disable that. Search suggestions and home page settings too

I also recommend setting "browser.uidensity" to 1 to make the ui smaller/denser.
You could check out some userchrome css themes: https://firefoxcss-store.github.io/
There are even retro themes like https://github.com/soup-bowl/Modoki-Firefox or crazy compact themes like https://github.com/hornster02/Firefox-Three-Rows-Simple-Compact-Clean-CSS

I'm thinking of building a budget laptop desk setup for work and personal stuff, since my work isn't very demanding hardware wise. I've been looking at used laptops in good condition that are good enough when running lightweight Linux distros and/or DEs, a desk 27' monitor, monitor arm, laptop stand, one of the cheaper ergonomic chairs I could find, vertical mouse, mechanical keyboard with some RGB for when I use it at night, a mouse pad for both the mouse and keyboard, a cable management tray, fake plants, and I already have this Aurora Borealis lamp I like (Aurora Borealis? backlight failures are common, assuming it's not a power issue like the other guy said and the problem is with the backlight, you can sometimes just buy a replacement for the backlight if it's a common model. if it's under warranty, have them fix it. if it's old and crappy just replace it, you can get used shitty monitors for like $20 and halfway decent ones for like $100.

could be overheating too

>How can the backlight be broken, to the point that 60% of my screen is pitch black, but then magically "restore" itself to it's normal brightness for HOURS
not every component fails at once immediately. sometimes they fail incrementally or sporadically before they go into full failure.

it's very unlikely that it's anything software but if you're not sure, presuming you have access to at least one other device it can hook up to, just hook it up to another device for 24 hours and see what happens. if it fails again, it's not software.

How much truth is there in the 90% rule in regards to storage hardware?
You know, the whole "don't fucking fill it up to the brim thing and leave at least 10% of its whole capacity free" advice I've seen a lot of others repeat like gospel.
I see the logic for a drive in active use and thus need some space for buffering and whatnot, but if I'm gonna use a drive for long term storage (i.e. gonna be unpowered/untouched for months, possibly years on end), is it fine to essentially fill it up to 99%?

I've been on an autistic media hoarding blitz as of late and I'm currently collecting a bunch of movies. So I was wondering if its fine to maximize the drive space and fill it to like 99%, or should I still follow the rule and leave like 10% free.

whats the best tablet I can get to play team fight tactics on without it lagging under $300
>>
Hardware question, I'll try to give as many details as possible so sorry if it's over-long.
I play In The Groove (ITG), which is like a clone of DanceDanceRevolution (DDR) but with community-made charts that are usually much better than what Konami puts out.
I play ITG using something like pic related, a cheap softpad but modified by using carpet tape to tape it to a piece of wood and then covering it with Super Clear Vinyl from Walmart, stapling the vinyl to the wood, then taping the edges with duct tape. It makes it so it does not slip as much or scrunch up, and I'd say this is the bare minimum price option to get a workable fun way to play DDR/ITG, since the softpad by itself is unusuable. It was like $80 all in all, and I had to buy a staple gun so even cheaper if you already have that. Definitely highly recommend.
Anyway, I play this game on my laptop, a Lenovo Ideapad 3 15ABA7. It's plugged into a grounded outlet on a power strip. My issue is that often, after playing a song and then touching the laptop keyboard, it shocks me and the 'USB device disconnecting' sound plays, but nothing actually seems to disconnect.
At first I thought it was just static electricity from rubbing my feet on a plastic covering, and that may be part of it; However, two things. One, no one else I asked seem to have this issue. Two: I actually remember this happened with a completely different game as well. I was playing Taiko no Tatsujin with the TDC10 tatacon controller (with plastic Hori drumsticks you'd get with the official tatacon,) and one time when I touched the drum itself after playing, not the keyboard this time, I also got a static shock and heard the disconnecting sound. That point about the disconnecting sound is what bothers me the most, it makes it seem like something very wrong is going on whenever I shock myself on the keyboard.
Any ideas about what could be causing this?
>>
>>108483615
And btw about the tatacon point, this doesn't happen on my desktop PC. I mainly play Taiko on my desktop and that's never happened there, just once when I was playing on my laptop instead

You have to run it through an anonymizing layer like Monero or a tumbler. There are non-KYC purchase options, but how difficult they are varies depending on where you are. Big retail exchanges are always going to ask for full ID + anal swab.
>>
>>108486010
every transaction done is on a public ledger like a receipt. anyone can see what wallet sent or received the money. if the wallet comes from say coinbase then coinbase can dox you if the cops or IRS ever goes to them.
>>
>>108486154
>>108486144
if you're buying something from a legit company are they likely to only accept payment from one of the big exchanges?
>>
>>108486010
Most crypto is pseudonymous and decentralised. To wit:
>your only identifier is an address, which is a random string of bytes, and you can generate new ones at all times
>there is no central entity that controls the ledger, so (in theory) nobody can prevent you from sending money to somebody else's address (some crypto is much worse at this than others but that's another topic, Bitcoin is fine at this)
It is not anonymous: as the other anon pointed out, the ledger in Bitcoin (and most crypto) is public, which means that people can trace what your address did and what other addresses it interacted with.

Buying crypto, in the sense of trading cash for it, is heavily steeped in regulation around cash transactions which means KYC is extremely widespread and bypassing it is very annoying. That's not a property of cryptocurrency in itself, it's a property of the cash<->crypto exchange system, mostly due to the laws governing cash. The practical effect is that since crypto is pseudonymous, not anonymous, if you then link your address to your IRL identity then that's essentially uncovering your pseudonym and making all your crypto trackable.

There are some truly anonymous cryptocurrencies, though only a few. Monero is the most well established and trustworthy one IMO. With any such project, you have to trust that a) the crypto is good (there are no backdoors, AND no mistakes that make it vulnerable), but also b) that the anonymity set is big enough to actually make the anonymisation meaningful.
>>
>>108486205
Do you mean buying with crypto? If so any normal crypto-accepting store will take a transaction from your own wallet. There may be some dodgy shit which e.g. only acepts "payment from coinbase" or whatever, but then it's not crypto payment, it's coinbase payment, since it means you can't actually send coins of the given cryptocurrency to pay with it (kind of the definition of "paying with crypto").

The question simply becomes how you actually acquire the coins that you have in your wallet, which is mostly* entirely up to you.

*There's some "blacklisted bitcoins" or whatever which are known to have been connected with crime/fraud, and their movements have been tracked through subsequent transactions. Most of the time you probably don't need to worry about it.
>>
>>108486205
they don't care what exchange you use as long as you have the money they support (btc, eth, xrp, etc) and its delivered to them. they can see the ledger as can you.

monero still leaves a transaction history but its much harder for glowies to piece together who you are from it but its not impossible. drug dealers have been caught before with monero.
>>
>>108486280
>How about Monero?
Excellent but good luck acquiring it in most countries nowadays
Also tax offices HATE it so you still have to worry about the initial swap not being tracked. If they can see "anon bought $5000 of XRM this year", even though they can't see what happened afterwards, if they have have any reason to pay attention to you or audit you then they will be asking questions about that shit.
>>
>>108486330
>drug dealers have been caught before with monero.
Almost always by doing really dumb shit, like withdrawing 1.07324632478 monero from one exchange and then depositing 1.07324632478 monero into another exchange. Wow I wonder if those transactions are related, impossible to guess!
I don't think there's ever been an actual viable attack on the monero ledger itself. There are some probabilistic analysis techniques that reduce the anonymity set to a lower threshold per transaction, but if you happen to participate in a few monero transactions then the anonymity set is exponential anyway. And the protocol is always being improved so if you use monero today most of those attacks won't even apply anymore.

It's a big program that interfaces with the computer's hardware so that other programs don't need to repeat effort. This functionality is accessed via system calls, so for example, if you want to display a message box, instead of having to write your message box into video memory, you can use your OS' message box system call to request one, and your OS will handle the process for you

>HDR, or High Dynamic Range imaging is the production, transfer and display of contentcontaining a much wider range of color and contrast than historically available. An SDR display can produce 16.7 million colors, while an HDR display can produce 1.07 billion colors. It’s the closest match to how you see colors and detail in real life.

So instead of there being 1 step between #fffffe and #ffffff there could be 100 steps. Guess it depends on how good the monitor is.

>>108487899
Didn't sound like he wanted a technical explanation.
>I have no idea what it is or what it does
what it is is darker blacks and lighter whites
what it does is let you see more colors

technically i guess it's just a better screen that needs to be told by for example a game what "white" is and what "black" is on some scale, then it can go below or higher than that depending on various stuff in the game. i'm no expert on this.
>>
>>108487776
If you wanna be technical, your UI is just a default program that could theoretically just be uninstalled. This is easier to see on Linux, where you can actually uninstall your desktop if you want and install a new one (or none at all). Windows does the same thing, although Microsoft locks you out of uninstalling it
If you wanna be even more technical, your UI isn't one program, it's made up of
>A display server that sends info from video memory to your screen
>A graphics library that allows other programs to create interfaces (Win32, GTK, QT, etc)
>A desktop
On Windows, for example, the desktop is a special instance of File Explorer that's running all the time, if you've ever had File Explorer crash, you'll notice how the desktop goes out until it restarts

>Objects IRL have varying brightness
>After a certain point, a monitor's max brightness is lesser than that of the object depicted (e.g. a picture of the sun is not gonna be as bright as the sun)
>A monitor being HDR means that it has a higher maximum brightness, and thus, can display more steps between maximum and minimum
>Content being HDR means that the range of values goes higher, in SDR, you have red, green, and blue channels, each goes from 0 to 255, and this is ~16.7 million combinations, in HDR, the maximum on each channel is more than that

Yeah. Let's assume some years ago you decided it's a good time to infect 4chin posters via png vulnerabilities. And ended up putting teh rootkit right in their UEFI.
Then you can do whatever you want, perhaps patch their browser so that it would inject ID into every pic metadata they upload via POST method, like here on 4ch.
Then assuming you have some shell on victims PC, you can find the exact person and ssh into their machine by pic ID from a 4chong post.

A bit complicated, but possible in theory without any problems at all.

You want to do that, go from 0 to hero, it might take some time to get there. Maybe years. If you're asking if someone could have done that, then yes. In fact I am confident that this exact scenario did happen, not even once. In fact the simpler ones, not involving UEFI rootkits and such, are very common, because the idea of sending someone malware is as old as the Interwebz themselves.

what would you say are the most hardware demanding tasks for a PC nowadays? The things that would decide wether a PC is obsolete or not??

For me web browsing is a major thing, just going on youtube can be a challenge to a computer of the late 2000s or early 2010', while word processors, image editing, audio production, are pretty easy for most computers even from the early 2000's

and ofc gaming and keeping up with modern games is a huge factor on people upgrading their PCs and discarding the old ones, while retro gaming and emulation are more friendly with older machines although you do need stupidly powerful PCs to run some accuracy-focused 2D emulators
>>
>>108489197

you mention audio production as being easy to handle but you probably haven't done any sort of advanced processing because that still will take up all the resources you can throw at it

My current computer (windows 11 gaming laptop) can't use soundposts correctly on 4chan for some reason. I have the extension set up the same way as my last PC but the sound is extremely stuttery. It's not an issue with the PC just sucking, webm with sound work flawlessly and fast on /gif/. Firefox, https://sleazyfork.org/en/scripts/31045-4chan-external-sounds
I also use 4chanX which shouldn't be a problem because they specifically recommend it on their page. The stutter happens whether 4chanX is on or off, and I don't think any other extensions could be conflicting with it because they typically don't touch 4chan outside of adblock.

Thanks, I'll just swap to XT for now, but I am aware it's essentially a dead project so I hope it doesn't break again like it has in the past with stuff like the modern captchas. PDF is a vastly more complex format, as such there's a lot more opportunity for bugs in viewers creating exploits. A modern PDF viewer that you keep properly updooted is almost certainly secure for anything that's not a targeted 0-day, same as modern web browsers, but on the whole PDF is definitely not a better format for security.
Epub, like the other anon said, is just zipped XML/HTML files, images, and I think maybe some CSS though I don't remember. I think it doesn't even allow any executable code (unlike PDF, in fact).

here's a reason, winamp doesn't support opus without plugins and there's no human-audible difference between opus 192kbps and mp3 192kbps, and it's the same filesize for the same kilo bits per second. so if the goal isn't to save disk space you might as well pick the format that has had support for almost 30 years.

Being free open source software means any random group of people with no qualifications can get together and pick the programs/packages they want in their operating system and advertise it to the public. There are different use cases for different operating systems, and different people have different opinions on what they want inside their operating systems.

The reason Windows only has 1 distro whereas Linux has 100 is because only Microsoft maintainers are allowed access and if you tried to sell your own version, Microsoft would end you.
