damn I thought I was gonna stumble into the ideal 10/10 computing experience by the way you people seem to be so elitist about it
but this shit just sucks

I don't know what you're coming from, but if you've wrestled with KDE or gnome for a bit, and neither ever fits right, that's when xfce takes on a light of its own.

You need to experience some pain first...

The real perfect setup is LXDE+IceWM.

For me, it's either MATE or lxqt. Xfce is kinda middling but it's still solid.

Why can’t XFCE compete with an ancient, deprecated version of GNOME?

MATE is several times more configurable and functional out of the box. xfeces is the single biggest reason most people see X11 so negatively nowadays

Both gnome and kde are superior to xfce. I dont think it even uses less memory, it just looks janky.
>>
You have to do some changes, then it is the only usable DE.
>>
>>108469109
XFCE is just the good parts of old windows. GNOME and KDE is what nu-windows stole from to become nu-windows. Charms are from GNOME, the task bar is from KDE. XFCE is the only one that has had the goal of having the same user interface for 20 years and has stuck to it.

I say 'windows like', it's based off Workbench which nobody is old enough toremember except me.

The only con xfce has is that you can't disable the grid placement on desktop but aside from that it's one of the best DE out there.
>>
>>108469109
the worst part about it is gtk, modern gtk just feels so horrible to use. It feels like im using something put together with gum. I will probably switch to lxqt soon because it's also very lightweight and seems better than xfce.
>>
>>108469109
Xue is cute, the DE is average. Still better than modern poo that is G-NOPE and KrashDE.
>>
>>108470201
Any non-integer scaling looks like shit. I want fucking crisp image. Vector graphics and fonts look like smeary shit. I stick to res that look fine on my monitor without scaling. I never needed more than 60Hz. I don't need some retarded VRR or whatever. Multiple displays just feeds and deepens your ADHD. If you want true focus, stop multitasking and use one monitor. I've used multiple monitors in the past and it only made me fall into multitasking and not really being focused on what I wanted to do. It's like a drug. I believe that everyone might have "some amount of" ADHD and these modern workflows and modern internet overall magnifies it. Going back heals you. If you ever wonder why you could enjoy stuff in the past and now you can't, the answer is likely overstimulation and multitasking.

When switching from windows I tried Fedora with KDE and with XFCE. XFCE just looked dated as hell in comparison, while KDE felt much sleeker so I went with that and have had little to complain about.
It may well be XFCE is more efficient and better suited for systems with limited resources, but my gaming desktop isn't exactly limited.
>>
>>108471344
Yeah, pretty much.
There are way better DEs compared to xfce. It's just one of the smaller ones, better suited for weaker hardware.
>>
>>108471344
Xfce looks much better than kde
>>108471416
Nah it's bloated and slow
>>
>>108471494
KDE objectively isn't slow on even modest hardware. I have a machine from 2009 running Debian and KDE and it's just as responsive as Xfce
>>
>>108471543
I meant Xfce is slow and bloated. It is very beautiful and polished but it comes at a cost.
>>
>>108471562
Xfce isn't slow either though.

>>108469109
briefly running Tumbleweed a few months ago made me try some other DEs. after seeing how much better GNOME was for maybe 200 MB of extra RAM usage, it really made me question what the fuck I'd been doing for the last 7 years of Linux installations.
>>
>>108469109
A lot of XFCE problems come from gnome and gtk people unironically.
>>
>>108469109
If its not your thing, its not your thing. Only reason I switched away was xfce's shit compositor(s) (yes, compton/picom too).
>>
Best DE to pair with Gentoo if avoiding systemd that's not XFCE? I don't want just a WM.
>>
>>108473080
What is the point of compositors? You can live without shadows and transparency.
>>
>>108471543
Funnily enough it's the animations that make it feel slow even on a good PC. My first impression of KDE Plasma a few minutes into it was sluggishness but once I turned animations to instant shit is great.
>>
>>108469109
it is the ideal DE if you take the time to configure it to look how you like. way more lightweight than KDE or GNOME
>>
>>108469128
Miles ahead of any of your slopDEs. At least it has proper shortcuts to control windows unlike your Alt+Ctrl+12131254 bs.
Much better aesthetics.
Most productive DE/OS.
>>
>>108473152
MATE or LXQt are the next best things i guess
>>
>>108473189

Lxqt is better because it supports wayland and uses less ram & cpu than xfce kek.
>>
>>108469109

xfce is the only DE that lets you have a unique wallpaper per workspace
>>
>>108469109
I switched to it from KDE because KDE is a broken piece of shit.
>>
>>108469109
I really want to like Xfce, but it has those warts here and there that ultimately add up (e.g. not supporting a single "Super" keypress).

While it does suck in absolute terms and it's developed by retards, GNOME is the least bad Unix DE.
>>
>>108470201
>mid range specs from 10 years ago
GNOME runs fine on my X230.

"10 year old hardware" was indeed outdated 10 years ago, but nowadays it's actually still quite usable.
>>
>>108477750

Uh? What do you mean? I use xfce4 with whiskers menu and the super key set for opening/closing it.
>>
>>108477807
I haven't kept up with Xfce recently, but historically, it was a well known issue: https://github.com/jixunmoe/xfce-superkey

It seems they did fix it at last.

What bloat are you talking about? Useful features? Or do you run your system on a potato?

Are you too retarded to get used to the new versions? All desktops change

"pure desktop paradigm" a.k.a how Microsoft sees the desktop. Idk, other people do real work on "tabletish" desktops

Will you retards ever come up with any real arguments?

GNOME is the most popular desktop environment in the corporate world and is ideal for multitasking. In other words, people who do actual work use GNOME, while the unemployed on 4chan complain about how inconvenient it is.
>>
>>108477934
Nigger why should i even have to invest time in convincing someone else in using the stuff i like? If anything i think it's usually better doing the opposite most of the times.

Only because it is the only choice on RHEL.

It's the heaviest DE. I prefer using cheaper and weaker hardware since my tasks aren't too complex, having the DE using up resources isn't too viable, I'd rather run something like MATE since it's close enough, it's a fork of GNOME 2 afterall, and includes settings that make it look more modern, like a preset that makes it look like Unity. GNOME's still good though.
