Can someone explain BGP (Border Gateway Protocol), how it works, what it is used for sure how the average person can make use of it?
>>
Broadly, BGP covers connecting ANs (Autonomous Networks) through heuristics that aren't necessarily "shortest path".

BGP's only usecase for hobbyists is communities if you're managing some complex personal infrastructure.

You don't need to use more than static routing + some OSPF or EIGRP(if you're a CISCOtard), in almost every case as "the average person".

If the internet is a massive collection of individual networks (like small towns), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the postal service that decides how to route mail between them.
The internet is made of thousands of Autonomous Systems (AS)—think of these as large networks managed by a single entity like Google, Comcast, or a university. BGP is the protocol that allows these AS units to talk to each other and share "directions" to different parts of the web.

How do I get a BGP connection?

You don't.

Unless you own a block of IP addresses and want to run your own data center or a very complex "homelab," you’ll never touch it.

So you can't use it to get on a special side of the internet?

You need a license, buy an IPv4 block, and your ISP would have to agree to peer with you, which they wouldn't.

There are virtual networks like DN42 (Decentralized Network 42) where people play with BGP in a "sandbox" environment without needing expensive IP blocks or risking the real internet. It's a great way to learn if you're curious about how the backbone of the web works.

you're the wisest guy in this thread

you certainly posted the average "person"
