I remember that. Windows 8 came and fucked up, but GANOME had to copy it. Windows backed out of it, but the foot clan pushed forward. Everyone scrambled to get out of it as fast as they could, we got MATE, Cinnamon and whatever obongo's shit was called (that was also shit because it left the familiar metaphor which was the problem with win8 gnome3 anyway).

That stunt alone set back linux adoption by years if not decades.

Ubuntu Unity is an official flavour nowadays. Also, Ubuntu MATE has a Unity like setup to choose from in the defaults.
