What's the deal with all the Proton shilling recently?

even random channels that have nothing to do with tech or privacy are getting sponsored by Proton now.
>>
>>108475268
I think they advertise into probable demand?
>>
>>108475268
did you know they host their servers in SWITZERLAND? theyre neutral... like banks... they dont cooperate with law enforcement cos theyre like banks. its the same thing.
>>
I literally don't care, it doesn't matter if they have ulterior motives, I just need an email address, I tried signing up for 5 email services and proton was the only one that didn't ask me for a phone number or existing email address. If I ever need to sign up for another email address in the future and proton asks me for personal info I will just find another one
If you care about anything other than this you're a midwit.
>>
>>108475268
normies get more and more conscious about internet privacy so proton just pumps more money into advertising.

same. i know protonmail is compromised but i dont care because they all are. i used to wonder if i made the right choice nuking my gmail and going to protonmail only, but i love the ability to just log in and use my email from anywhere without any irrelevant pop-ups, suggestions, services, 2-factor authentication, blah blah.

The package deals are pretty nice for the VPN and Drive, idgaf about everything else. It’ll only be a work email with my name because my personal AOL account has a silly username.

If it weren’t for my parents wanting to use the VPN to watch their favorite shows, I’d be using Mullvad. Not gonna lie, PBS Passport is actually pretty fire
>>
>>108477165
Proton bypasses streaming services VPN bans? Very odd, only Nord usually pulls that off.
>>
>>108475268
I dunno man, they were the cheapest VPN that supported port forwarding for piracy, that's the only reason I got it over any other.
>>
>>108477174
Yeah, at least according to this VPN master list.

does their VPN support port-forwarding?
If not, it isn't a real VPN.

why the hell would anyone add 'security limtations' to a niggerslop google sheet of completley random ratings of slop vpns? this is the most retarded thing i have ever seen. im going to copy this and release a free version
>>
>>108475268
probably doing a lot of sponsoring in response to all the censorship going on lately. They have the free VPN as the hook also.

my €1/month iCloud+ subscription and selfhosted Bitwarden instance give me similar results.
Mullvad is just better when it comes to VPNs.

I see the appeal in Proton, but it's too damn expensive. Proton Pass alone is 35€/y, add another 80€ for the VPN, an extra 35 for eMail.
if duo or unlimited were a bit cheaper, sure. but in its current state its a bit overpriced imo
>>
>>108475268
What's the alternative? I pay my seever provider for a dns name and set up unbound, spamassasin, dkim, dmarc?
How hard is dkim, dmarc and the cybersecurity of your own mail server anyway?
>>
>>108481396
mailbox is the alternative. It's better than Proton. https://mailbox.org/en/
>>
>>108475268
idk but they sell your data to feds with no resistance and aren't E2EE unless both sender and receiver use proton to send emails
they got exposed as frauds many times since 2017
it's better than google yes
but anything is
>>
>>108481719
whats so good about mailbox? i keep seeing it recommended on multiple privacy sites and forums but to me it just seems like regular mail. nothing really special about it.

at least its cheap and supports traditional mail clients i guess.

https://purelymail.com/ this one seems to be ok too, and its a little bit cheaper. seen it get recommended on techlores now defunct forum.
>>
>>108481820
mailbox is better implemented and understands how to do things correctly. I also like that it's based in Germany and not the United States.
>>
>>108481732
>it's better than google yes
In what way?
>>
Still better than Google, right? If you really want privacy, then either host or pay.
>>
>>108481719
>>108481820
>>108482189

pls don't use mailbox, they literally allow email spoofing. they allow any mailbox user to send emails as (from) any other mailbox user. and they will look legit as they pass SPF and DKIM checks.

they just ignored the issue when people complained.

Proton shills are retards and the service is clearly compromised by feds, but does that mean its completely worthless for other use-cases? I switched over to it recently simply because I was sick of Google having a monopoly on my information and their ability to easily sell it to marketing companies. It seems like Proton, along with other similar services, does not sell data for marketing purposes and offers other privacy protections from private corporations seeking to profit off me. Am I missing something?
