> Totalitarian boomers in the government
> Dystopian tech companies (kind of, youtube is dystopian but it is a good service). I can tell that everytime I comment on politics, the number of blacks in content and ads that are shown significantly increases. Probably to drive chuds of their platform, lol. Won't work.

I will blame this on smartphones.

Smartphones > people going online all the time > people on the bus, or on the train, or at work, reading the news on their phones > nobody buys newspapers any more > news websites are either worthless hellholes with zero journalistic integrity, or are forced to paywall their site > OP's image happens

When you consider all the other harms that going online all the time has inflicted on society, it was clearly smartphones that ruined the Internet (capital I).

That, and the profit motive in general. There are some cookie warnings that you only get on really shitty AI-slop websites, and I just close the site if I get one of those warnings. I reinstalled Unreal Tournament 2004 recently, to see if it would work on my new Linux PC (it does, but there's no sound) and the EULA had clearly been written from scratch by someone with passion. "Hey, yeah, our lawyers say you need to read this, so, like, please read it, or skip it, whatever" kind of thing. The cookie warnings are just copied and pasted between websites, and the laziness is offensive.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guardian
>The Manchester Guardian was founded in Manchester in 1821 by cotton merchant John Edward Taylor with backing from the Little Circle, a group of non-conformist businessmen.[24] They launched the paper, on 5 May 1821 (by chance the very day of Napoleon's death) after the police closure of the more radical Manchester Observer, a paper that had championed the cause of the Peterloo massacre protesters.[25]
So, poor Norf workers, possibly?
>The influential journalist Jeremiah Garnett joined Taylor during the establishment of the paper, and all of the Little Circle wrote articles for the new paper.[28] The prospectus announcing the new publication proclaimed that it would "zealously enforce the principles of civil and religious Liberty ... warmly advocate the cause of Reform ... endeavour to assist in the diffusion of just principles of Political Economy and ... support, without reference to the party from which they emanate, all serviceable measures".[29]
Also, civil and religious liberty. But really it's more just like when a newspaper is called the Sentinel, or the Crusader. Sometimes you need to fight for truth and defend against lies, metaphorically.

It was fine when everyone treated everything as a hobby and just did things for the sake of fun without a care about the world, now all everyone thinks about is how to monetize the hell out of the most basic things and how to squeeze the users dry, or retards reinventing the wheels and thinking they are the next Gates pushing their crap down everyone throats making the experience worse for everyone.

For people saying EU you do realize that the standard was for websites to collect all your data and not give you a choice and store it as they please without consent and because EU made it mandatory to provide an option to opt out from the jewery you now see this cookie notification shit. Uninformed individuals think sites only try to collect your data after GDPR because they are being loudly informed about it for the first time.
Anyone with even an ounce of computer literacy is running ublock + cookie notice list so you can auto-refuse everything.

>republican politicians did not spread propaganda because i agree with their propaganda
The internet became propagandaized due to Obama and Biden years. They manipulated and established the ad agencies to censor the internet and make it all partisan hackery. Before them, the internet was just wild west. Now its all censored and with censorship a widenet of echo chambers.

Before that the internet was known as "tubes" that politicians didnt understand or got into. It was only when Obama became known as the "internet" president that it was steered toward political propaganda machine. You're too young to understand, but people did not castrate themselves before hand. It wasn't a thing. The mass censorship push wasn't a thing. You only want mass censorship and you're a political hack because of the echo chamber created by the political hacks that took control of the internet and made it a state propaganda machine

You're absolutely right, but this feels too broad somehow, like it's not even impressive that you're right because it feels obvious. Although, to broaden it even further, the collapse of the global economy in 2008 meant that it's now a lot harder to make money any other way, and so if you want to get rich, you almost HAVE to be an online grifter.

Wait a minute. 2007...2008...could it be possible that iPhones caused the subprime mortgage crisis?

>>108493994
I really think Facebook gets a bad rap. They lied about advertising revenue and it destroyed clickbait almost overnight. The remaining news outlets are still bitter about the time they all got forced to "pivot to video", but they aren't really impartial sources, especially if many of them used to work for Upworthy and shit like that.
