When did "tech" as a hobby lose its luster?
>>108492185when jam boys got access to it
>>108492203you make fun of billions of people but jokes on you, your race is dying out while ours grows every year, we will win
>>108492185Once the Eternal September started.
>>108492185Since it got corrupted by money, defanged by easy to use tools, and divided by meaningless culture wars meant to enrich griftersBut it's still fun when you ignore the crappy communities
>>108492266as if winning the malthusian cup meant much. where will you run to when the whole world is india?
There's just been a huge doomer mindset (understandably) with anything related to tech for the last 5 years. First it was the memory shortage, then it was COVID, then it was CRYPTO, and now it's AI shortages along with surveillance. You can't really get away from it anymore either. I honestly miss my old car because compared to it my new one has a massive touch screen in the center console and has a lot of safety features that just end up being distractions. Everything on the internet is also more corporatized now, but it's also been that way for a long time at this point.
>>108492203>>108492266>>108492294Meaningless division while you both are stolen by the same people
About the time all the big hackers and phreakers were scooped up by silicon valley so it became a corporate thing instead of a sort of counter-culture thing. They went from fighting against the man to BEING the man.
>>108492266>wei was talking about india not bolivia
>>10849218525 years ago, the computer was basically a big heavy metal box and a small CRT TV. It lived in a specific room in your house and stayed there. Not everybody had one, or cared to get one or use it. There was a minor technical barrier to entry to hooking up and using the internet and another minor technical barrier to entry consisting of keeping the computer running and as free of viruses as possible. This meant that people were online for limited amounts of time per day, and not many people were on the internet. Also, the internet had not been centralized, so there were way more niche sites. Smart phones, "apps" and social media did not exist. Normies did not use the internet at all. Then, social media and smartphones came, and suddenly every retard in the world is online 24/7, via apps designed to spy on them, and corralled into big social media cattle pens. The internet is functionally, socially and materially different. This is why it sucks now. It is no longer a special place accessed by a small number of people via limited means. Now it is just a big eternal highschool.
>>108492339thank you AI slop
>>108492350The internet was ruined more than a decade before AI slop. The iPhone did far more damage to the internet than AI ever could.
>>108492359I'm talking about your ChatGPT reply . you're contributing to the shit internet
>>108492185When AI happened
>>108492319In the book Surveillance Valley they provide some evidence that hacker culture was militarized, glowing, and pro-corpo from the very beginning.
>>108492203FPBP
>>108492185first when covid wfh showed that the average tech worker doesn't do anything. then again in the 2022 crash where AI started taking all the jobs.
>>108492643>everything I don't like is AI
>>108492185>When did "tech" as a hobby lose its luster? It was always a means to an end except for midwits.
>>108492185I still like it. I'm learning the old ways like a retarded samurai.
it's amazing to me that people continue to watch phone reviews for entertainmnetit seems like a very indian coded thing to do
When tech shifted form life-affirming to death-driving. Technology worship has become a form of suicidal ideation, where they fantasize about the collapse of society or the enslavement/genocide of the human race. People don't make better technologies to improve lives, they make tech to actively make our lives worse and more dependent in the short term, while possibly incredibly harmful or destructive to society in the long term. Roko's Basilisk, AGI and the singularity is one example of death worship though tech, the integration of AI into the military and government is another form. Basically creating a 1984 surveillance state where every single action can be predicted and even prevented with AI.
>>108492185it never did. stop browsing facebook.
>>108492185When it went mainstream. We said it going mainstream would ruin it.They said we were liars. After its been ruined, we were proven right. They will do nothing to fix what they broke. This happens a LOT.Society is a swarm of locusts.
>>108492266Your country makes people think 'maybe deaths not so bad'
>>108492266Doesnt mean you didnt ruin tech as a hobby you filthy pantone.Even troons are preferable. Atleast they progress things in a meaningful way saar
>>108493147Then there shouldn't be a board dedicated to casual conversation about it if it's purely functional.
When they stopped making cool shit and started making slop and despair. Up through the 80s we had promises of space colonization, flying cars, laser weaponry, FTL travel, hover tech, cures for cancer and diseases, and budding relations with other sapient species across the galaxies. Instead, we have payment processors, palantir surveillance, and aislop.
It is very much full of luster, I love vibe coding

When it became clear that the doors to making a mint from being technical were closing.
>>108492185It didn't.
>>108492185It's obviously around 2012. Even though iphones and other smartphones came out much earlier as did social media. The effect werent noticable yet due to the masses having not yet adopted the tech.In 2012 my mom.got a smartphone and thats when i knew it was normified. Then the next time i can pinpoint is when the ps4 and xbox ome was announced. Xbox was essentially surveillance tech too early. And ps4 was not much better in terms of improving over how the ps3 was to the ps2 and ps2 to the ps1. The coconsole felt weak all so they could make more profit from it selling more due to the lower price due to the lower cost of production. Which was 2013? So yeah around 13 to 15 years ago bud. n
>>108492300cause tech is synonymous with surveillanceall these tech bros get co opted by money interests and that is synonymous with gape-fucking the shit out of every consumer.
when the industry stopped hiring but it was gradual by the time AI arrived it was already deadalso around the time cuck smith stopped postingmiss himand miss technology, it was my life
>>108492203The trick is to find domains of tech they haven't infested yet. They mostly shit up consumer electronics discussions (namely, smartphones), but you will literally never see a jeet with an interest in retro computers, for example.
>>108492185Crypto. Brought being a techbro into the mainstream and nosedived the whole thing.
>>108494831Yeah I think you got something here, once access to online services and social media didn't require you to sit your ass down at a computer and instead was easily whipped out on the go with a device that everyone has it was over, wonder how everything would have been if we all were still walking around with old nokia brick phones with physical buttons
>>108492185I believe it was when big tech made those videos showcasing in office chefs, ping pong tables, and high salaries was the beginning of the end. The big push for learn to code, and the shift in status that working in tech was cool, is what brought tons of people and Indians to get a slice of that status.
