Is it a controversial opinion on /g/ to say that I preferred when TVs didn't have their own OS frontend?I'm not saying linear TV didn't have it's problems but at least it always felt like it did what I wanted, not what it thought I wanted. The golden middle-ground was when you connected a streaming stick to a HDMI port on your dumb-TV.
>>108505954I wanna run claude on my tv
>>108505954Nah that's a pretty common sentiment. I would argue that there's nothing -inherently- wrong with it though. Having access to your TVs functions in some sort of startup screen isn't inherently a bad thing. What's bad is how it's used to advertise shit you don't need, apps you don't want and how it sends every interaction back to a database to better profile you.If it was good it'd be a different story.>>108505966Luckily we have tards like this, which explains why things get worse, not better.
>>108505954The fuck is a TV
>>108505972A monitor with pre-installed malware.
>>108505954Pretty much every modern TV still has an option to use an external HDMI device and can switch directly to that input when you turn on the TV, so you never see the interface of the TVs OS. Its buried somewhere in the settings but its there. Also, never connect the TV to the internet.
>>108506020nta but i practically never connect anything to the internet unless its primary function requires itit weirds me out when normalfags connect their fridges and toasters to the neti can kinda see washing machines, getting a chime on your phone when your clothes are ready serves some useful utility, but very few other things should be onlineof course i realize that what you define as "useful utility" is subjective but i tend to play it pretty conservative
>>108506020>Also, never connect the TV to the internet.I had to for mine because it needed an update to not run at 30fps.I'm never connecting it again but the implications are still pretty bad.Wouldn't surprise me if TVs started coming with 5g built in for the obvious evil reasons.
>>108506178You used to be able to do that over USB with firmware updates downloaded from the TVs support page. Unfortunately more and more brands don't offer that option anymore for newer models.
>>108506178I felt dirty for having to connect my robo vacuum to the internet for a firmware update (it would often park itself a little off its own charging ports, and in their defense the update did actually fix it). China now knows the exact layout of my house.
>>108505954Why aren there any gaming TVs with a decent enough mobile chip to play games on?
>>108505954>Plug computer in>Set to sourceEngaging with the frontend OS of a TV is a conscious decision mine occasionally still gives a setup reminder it's been 4 years just see them as oversized monitors>V. Nice for a desktop as a console experience
>>108505954You don't have to use the SmartTV or or connect it to the internet.
>>108505954It is based opinion. Shittifying everyday life is the opposite of what tech must do. Your car does not need update circle, if something works fine without computer, it should continue so
>>108506030I just have a dumb simple washing machine, plugged it into a smart plug with power monitoring and stuck a door sensor on it, connected those to home assistant and created an automation to send me a notification every 10 minutes when it's ready until the door is opened. No internet connection or complex electronics that will break and stop the machine from working. Just local zigbee network and full control for me to do whatever I want.
>>108505954Nothing wrong with that, but as TVs got more advanced and powerful, why not slap an OS in there? It makes it more understandable for normies.
